‘We are not going to let this one get us down’

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice echoed the thoughts of his manager that it was a terrible way to finish the game.

“If you aren’t going to win the game, then don’t lose it,” he told TNT Sports.

“There was a giveaway on the edge of our box and then they’ve hit us on the counter.

“There’s a lot to play for in the second leg, which is at home.

“We’re really positive as a group and we’ve had a great start to 2024, so we are not going to let this one get us down.

“You can’t underestimate teams because it’s the Champions League and special things happen.”

‘We lacked threat’

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits his side got a number of things wrong on the night in Porto.

“We have to manage much better when you cannot win,” he told TNT Sports.

“The way we handled the ball on three occasions in deep areas is not good enough.

“That is half-time, and if you want to be in the quarterfinals, you have to beat your opponent and this is what we have to do at the Emirates now.

“We lacked threat, we lacked aggression, so we will change a few things to attack better.”

‘Two years since a game without a shot on target’

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown highlights the glaring stat that hurt Arsenal in Porto – it’s the first time in two years that they’ve failed to register a shot on goal.

“Was the handbrake on?” Keown questioned on TNT Sports.

“They have to hold this hurt now and prepare because it’s three weeks now until the second leg.”

‘All to play for’

The Arsenal social media account on X says it’s “all still to play for” and they are right.

At this moment though, that will feel like a flattening defeat by the manner of the goal and the fact that the Gunners didn’t hit the target themselves in the match.

Arsenal failed to register a shot on target

The Gunners had a 65-35 share of possession but failed to test the Porto keeper.

They had seven efforts but not one on target.

Porto had eight efforts on goal with two on target – which doesn’t include Rodrigues do Nascimento Galeno hitting the post in the first half.

Porto had all the big chances.

Arsenal had two headers from the corner, and both should have been goals but both were off target.
