BREAKING: Texas Tech Small Co-Ed Cheer Squad Captures First-Ever National Title in Debut Season, Delivering a Show-Stopping Performance That Redefines Collegiate Cheerleading Excellence and Cements Red Raiders’ Legacy on the National Stage

In a historic and electrifying performance that has sent shockwaves through the collegiate cheerleading community, Texas Tech University’s Small Co-Ed Cheer Squad clinched their first-ever national championship at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) & National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships.

Competing in the Advanced Small Division 1A category for the very first time, the squad delivered a near-flawless routine that earned them a score of 95.4084, outpacing formidable programs such as North Carolina State, Brigham Young University (BYU), Louisville, and Kansas.

A Season Marked by Resilience and Dedication

Under the leadership of Head Cheer and Mascot Coach Bruce Bills, the team navigated a season filled with challenges, including injuries and the complexities of forming a new division within the program. Despite these hurdles, the squad’s commitment never wavered.

“They had an ever-changing and challenging year,” said Coach Bills. “Through it all, they trusted and pushed each other and me to be better. I’m so happy for our seniors who have helped grow this squad and got to finish with a win.”

The squad’s composition—four men and sixteen women, along with the spirited presence of Texas Tech’s mascot, Raider Red—embodied a perfect blend of strength, agility, and enthusiasm. Their routine showcased elite stunts, synchronized tumbling, and dynamic crowd engagement, captivating both judges and spectators alike.

Preparation: The Road to Victory

The journey to the championship was paved with relentless preparation. Starting in August, the team dedicated themselves to perfecting their craft, culminating in over 100 rigorous practice sessions. The choreography, introduced in January, was meticulously refined to highlight the squad’s strengths and ensure a seamless performance on the national stage.

“This is where we get to do why we do what we do,” Coach Bills remarked. “On that national stage, we are doing the most elite skills known in cheerleading.”

The intensity of the competition was palpable, with the margin between first and second place being less than half a point. The announcement of Texas Tech as the national champion was met with an outpouring of emotion and pride from the team and their supporters.

A Legacy of Excellence

This victory adds a new chapter to Texas Tech’s storied cheerleading legacy. The university’s Large Co-Ed Cheer Squad has previously secured national championships in 2017 and 2019, with consistent top-three finishes in subsequent years.

The success of the Small Co-Ed team in their inaugural season not only underscores the depth of talent within Texas Tech’s Spirit Program but also sets a precedent for future squads.

“Truly remarkable,” said Spirit Program Director Stephanie Rhode. “This team fought through so much adversity and injuries this season. To see them do so and capture a small co-ed title in their first year to compete over such incredible competition. Wow!”

Looking Ahead

While the celebration of this monumental achievement continues, the focus is already shifting to the future. Tryouts for the next season are on the horizon, and the team is eager to build upon their success.

“Representing Tech means everything to me… and that’s what I try to give back to the athletes,” Coach Bills expressed. “Competing with that double-T on your chest — it means a lot to us because we want to make sure that we are representing Texas Tech at the highest level.”

As the Victory Bells ring in Lubbock, the triumph of the Small Co-Ed Cheer Squad serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, teamwork, and unwavering school spirit. Their story is not just one of a championship won but of a legacy begun.
