SWANSEA FANS GRANT SHEEHAN’S WISHES

Swans boss Alan Sheehan asked for the home supporters to “not be silenced” by Man City and their quality tonight, and his wishes have certainly been granted.

“We want the fans to be right behind the team,” said Sheehan before the game.

A tense second half awaits but Swansea have the 12th man, that’s for sure.

HALF-TIME (SWANSEA 1-1 MAN CITY)

Goncalo Franco’s 25-yard beauty handed Swansea a dream start but Jeremy Doku’s deflected effort was enough to level up the scoring.

Rico Lewis went close with the last kick off the first period but Andy Fisher was equal to it with a fine stop. All to play for in the second 45.

44′

OFF THE LINE!

Omar Marmoush dribbles past several Swansea defenders and drills the ball towards the far corner, but it’s cleared away on the line by Kaelan Casey! That’s heroic last-ditch defending, it really is.

GOAL!! SWANSEA 1-1 MAN CITY (DOKU)

Man City have an equaliser and it’s Jeremy Doku! The Belgium international sprints to the byline, dribbles inside, shimmies with a fake shot and eventually fires into the net via a deflection.

It’s a harsh moment for Swansea defender Cameron Burgess, who tries to make the block but sees the ball ricochet off his toe and loop over Fisher.

OFF THE POST!

It’s that man again, Cherki, and City can’t believe they haven’t scored! Oscar Bobb does brilliantly down the right and a dummy from Rico Lewis allows Cherki to poke at goal, but his effort rebounds off the left woodwork.

34′

JUST WIDE FROM CHERKI

Cherki has a go from the edge of the area after a Jeremy Doku cutback, but his effort is deflected behind for a corner, which is delivered straight down the throat of Swansea goalkeeper Andy Fisher.

If anyone is to score for City, it looks like it will be Cherki. But no clear-cut opportunities mustered up just yet for the visitors.

31′

SO NEARLY TWO FOR SWANSEA!

Abdukodir Khusanov gives the ball away completely unnecessarily when playing out from the back and Melker Widell pounces, striking hard and low to force a terrific fingertip save from Trafford.

Widell will be disappointed not to have scored from there, but it’s a great stop from Trafford, it must be said. Khusanov’s blushes are spared, just about.

29′

MAN CITY CHANCE

Cherki uses a clever step-over to jink away from Franco and fires an exquisite low delivery across the face of goal, however there’s nobody there to convert. Someone needed to gamble there, but they didn’t. You best believe Haaland would have!

25′

SWANSEA REFUSING TO SIT BACK

Many underdogs would resort to a deep low block after taking an early lead but Swansea are trying to play out whenever they can. An inswinging Swansea corner prompts a few gasps but Man City manage to clear away.

IDAH BOOKED

Adam Idah is the next in the book, the Swansea striker going in late on Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. This is a feisty encounter, helped by the early goal.

YELLOW FOR AIT-NOURI

Rayan Ait-Nouri is the first name taken by Jarred Gillett. The Algerian hasn’t had a great start and he’s now on thin ice.

16′

SWANSEA IN DREAMLAND

Franco has given this noisy Swansea.com Stadium crowd genuine belief they can go on to achieve something special tonight.

There’s still a long, long way to go – especially against the usually clinical Man City – but Alan Sheehan’s men are thrilled to have their noses in front.

GOAL!!! SWANSEA 1-0 MAN CITY (FRANCO)

Oh my word! Swansea have the lead and it’s an absolute stunner from Goncalo Franco!

Totally unmarked on the edge of the area, Franco bends one into the top right corner from 25 yards, the ball flicking off the upright as it goes in. It was a great lay-off from Joshua Key, but an even better finish! James Trafford had no chance.

CHERKI LOOKING LIVELY

Rayan Cherki appears to be City’s danger man in the absence of Erling Haaland. The tricky Frenchman has already made two or three dangerous runs into the area, but Swansea have been solid enough to weather the storm as of yet.

7′

END-TO-END START

Guardiola’s men may have expected to dominate possession – and they still could – but Swansea are giving a good account of themselves so far, having their fair share of the ball and doing more with it.

3′

EARLY WARNING FROM SWANSEA

The hosts have the ball in the net as Adam Idah converts from a low cross from the left, but the linesman had his flag up on the far side. That’s an early confidence booster for Swansea!

WE’RE UNDERWAY!

Australian referee Jarred Gillett blows his whistle and Swansea, in their white home strip, get the action underway, kicking from right to left.

19:40

FIVE MINUTES TO GO

Not long now until the action gets underway at the Swansea.com Stadium.

No team outside the top flight has won this competition for over 30 years, but the Swans will be determined to cause a famous upset and keep their dream alive.

19:35

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

This evening is a great opportunity for a number of fringe players to impress, especially from Man City.

James Trafford, for instance, has had to be patient for his chance since Gianluigi Donnarumma was brought in as a second summer goalkeeper signing.

Then there’s attacking midfielder Divine Mukasa, in for only his second-ever senior City appearance, following on from notching an assist in the win at Huddersfield.
