Manchester United suffered a major blow in their hopes of qualifying for Europe as they were thrashed 4-0 at Crystal Palace on Monday.

United, without Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and several other first-team players through injury, were second best from the off and went behind courtesy of a fine strike from Michael Olise.

Jean Phillipe-Mateta doubled Palace’s lead just before the break before Tyrick Mitchell scored the third and Olise netted his second midway through the second period to complete the scoring.

Defeat for United is their 13th in the Premier League this season – the club’s worst ever return. It leaves them eighth, level on points with seventh-place Chelsea and two points behind Newcastle in sixth.

Pressure is intensifying on Erik ten Hag after another humiliating away defeat, with the Dutchman highlighting their lack of centre-back options available as a factor behind the loss.

Ten Hag blocking McClaren

Michael Owen has accused Erik ten Hag of blocking Steve McClaren from coaching the current Manchester United team after their drubbing at Crystal Palace.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Owen said: “There is no way that he has anything to do with coaching that team, it’s impossible because that team is absolutely clueless right the way through it.

“There is not one thing that I think ‘that works’ in that team. Steve McLaren is a top operator and I can only think that other people are coaching the team and he’s a bystander.

“They will get smashed out of the ballpark by every team they still have to play, playing like that today. Manchester City are going to demoralise them at Wembley in front of millions of people it’s embarrassing.

“Something has got to change. I think it’s got to change now there are too many big games. This could decide European football next season, this is a trophy.”

Pogba set for career change

Former Manchester United star Paul Pogba has reportedly turned to acting while serving a four-year ban for doping.

The midfielder was hit with the ban back in February, having tested positive for a banned substance following a game for Juventus last August. Pogba has appealed the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and maintains he did not intentionally take the substance.

However, while waiting for his appeal to be heard ESPN are reporting that Pogba has dipped his toe into the world of acting. The footballer is said to have been filming scenes for a French film called 4 Zéros in Paris this week.

Casemiro analysed

Watching Manchester United’s 4-0 drubbing against Crystal Palace on Monday evening will have done little to change Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s convictions on his team.

Since purchasing a 27.7 per cent stake in the club earlier this season, the INEOS founder has instigated an Old Trafford overhaul. United have seen the arrivals of Omar Berrada from Manchester City as new chief executive and Jason Wilcox as technical director, while John Murtough has left his role of football director.

There is the potential for even greater movement in the playing squad this summer following a subpar season that sees the club sitting in eighth. Erik ten Hag has also had a miserable second year in charge of United, with the squad lacking players who have improved their reputation.

With few names escaping Manchester United’s transfer list, it is perhaps little surprise that former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro is a player the club are open to selling.

Damning Man Utd assessment

The most Manchester United player on the pitch at Selhurst Park last night was wearing a Crystal Palace shirt.

Michael Olise not only scored two goals in the 4-0 thrashing of Erik ten Hag’s shambolic side. He caused a buzz of excitement around the stadium every time he touched the ball.

One passage of play in the first half summed up the one-sided match. The France Under 21 international shrugged off Antony by the touchline, ghosted past Christian Eriksen with an audacious stepover before launching another attack. The cameo caused an instant standing ovation.

Olise has the kind of class and confidence to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United superstars like George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Along with Eberechi Eze, he has formed a deadly attacking duo behind Jean-Philippe Mateta which ran the Manchester United rearguard ragged.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said: “In Eze and Olise, Crystal Palace have got two players that would walk into Manchester United’s team. Under Oliver Glasner, they have been brilliant.”

Tyrick Mitchell added: “Michael’s a quality player. You can see that he’s a talent. He’s a gifted footballer, so we know that from training, from last season. The front three are amazing. You can see every game they’re a threat. Every game they’re getting goals or assists. They’re just a joy to be playing with.”

Sheringham calls for Ten Hag sack

Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham has urged the club to sack Erik ten Hag and believes “changes are needed” following their humiliation at Crystal Palace.

He told Genting Casino: “If Manchester United win the FA Cup, will it give Ten Hag a stay of execution? I suppose it probably would, but, for me, looking at this long-term, I think changes are needed and Manchester United need to get it done sooner than later.”

Mourinho keen for Man Utd job

Jose Mourinho is keen on a sensational return to Manchester United – but knows that the club don’t want him back.

Mourinho, 61, has been out of work since being sacked by Roma in January and has told confidants of his strong but fanciful desire to be given a second chance as manager of the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag’s role has come under increasing scrutiny over the past few months, with Monday’s dreadful 4-0 defeat away to 14th-placed Crystal Palace serving as the nadir to a wretched season. Should Ratcliffe and Co pull the trigger, the Manchester Evening News report that Mourinho would be willing to ‘walk’ back to Old Trafford.

Ferdinand gives Ratcliffe pointers

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has given Sir Jim Ratcliffe five pointers to try and ease their injury crisis.

The main question for United fans is why can’t they seem to maintain a fully fit squad, with Ferdinand attempting to explain the potential reasons on his Vibe with FIVE podcast prior to the Palace defeat – their record 13th in a Premier League season.

Carragher issues Man Utd rant

Jamie Carragher launched a stinging rant of Manchester United following their humiliation at the hands of Crystal Palace.

And he is now facing Carragher’s criticism, with the Liverpool legend claiming United are the ‘worst coached team’ in the top-flight. Carragher also took aim at Casemiro and Antony, urging the former to pull back from top level football.

It was an extraordinary rant from the Sky Sports pundit, who pulled no punches in his assessment of United’s dire performance.

Ferdinand hits back at Morgan

Rio Ferdinand has brutally hit back at Piers Morgan and called him “moobs” after being mocked during Manchester United’s thumping 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Goals from Jean Phillippe-Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell, as well as a Michael Olise brace condemned the Red Devils to their 13th Premier League defeat of the season – the club’s worst-ever return since the division was rebranded in 1992.

It was a demoralising evening for United and Morgan, a devoted Arsenal fan, decided to poke fun at Ferdinand after Palace had scored their fourth.

“Hi mate, @rioferdy5 – you OK? #Tears4Rio,” Morgan tweeted on X. It didn’t take Ferdinand long to spot and reply, with the former Manchester United commenting back: “Hey #moobs I’m behind the sofa ffs.

“Make sure ya tuck them moobs in ya long johns while jumping around and gloating over our embarrassing performance tho @piersmorgan.”

Ferdinand singles out Casemiro

Rio Ferdinand took aim at Casemiro after Manchester United conceded the opening goal in their drubbing at Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils were hammered at Selhurst Park with Michael Olise scoring early on in the capital. Casemiro had to fill in as a makeshift centre-half such are the injury problems at centre-half but went to ground as he attempted to make a tackle which set Olise on his way.

The Eagles’ star was able to waltz into the box before his scuffed shot nestled into the corner past Andre Onana. Ferdinand was straight on social media singling out the Casemiro – insisting he should’ve stayed on his feet rather than attempting to make the tackle. He posted: “Casemiro, stay on your feet.”

Carragher on Ten Hag

Jamie Carragher has issued a worrying sack message to Erik ten Hag and believes Manchester United are one of the worst coached teams in the Premier League.

He told Sky Sports: “This is one of the most poorly coached teams in the Premier League. That is a fact. That is not an opinion, that is a fact. The numbers tell you that when they are bottom of the league defensively, lower than Sheffield United.

“Your performance levels will drop and the results are not as good when you are missing your best players, that is the most obvious thing to say. I have said this for a while for Erik ten Hag now, it’s almost the opposite of what you would say with most managers.

“You say they need a result, but he needs performances. He needs belief that you know they are struggling with players and it’s not a great time and the structure at the club isn’t right, we get all of that. But you have to make us believe that there is something here and working towards something.

“I struggled to see how Manchester United would win tonight. No Manchester United team should be getting beat 4-0 by Crystal Palace.”

Ten Hag suggests Man Utd stars ‘gave up’ at Palace

Erik ten Hag has accused his Manchester United players of giving up but does shed the blame for their battering at Crystal Palace.

When asked if the loss was the worst of his reign, Ten Hag replied: Yes. Our worst defeat.

“We should have kept fighting like the fans did. It’s clear, this is underperforming. It’s by far not good enough. We are very disappointed.

“It’s a deserved defeat. I will keep fighting. I prepared the team in the best way I could do. It was by far not good enough and I have to take responsibility for that.”

United set unwanted record

Manchester United are at serious risk of breaking an unwanted 34-year record following their hammering at Crystal Palace.

Boss Erik ten Hag is once again fighting to save his job, with his side now eighth in the Premier League table, 13 points adrift of the top four. With just three games left, they now cannot qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Even more embarrassingly for Ten Hag, his side will finish with fewer points than the much-maligned David Moyes managed to accumulate during his ill-fated stint as manager. They also have to claim five more points to avoid their lowest ever top-flight points total.
