Manchester United will be targeting a much-needed three points when they welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford tonight.
United’s winless run was extended to three matches on Sunday after they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal. The Reds have now won just two of their last 11 Premier League outings.
The visit of the Magpies could prove decisive in United’s hopes of qualifying for Europe for next season via their Premier League finishing position. They are currently three points and two places behind Newcastle with just two games left to play.
Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, manager Erik ten Hag confirmed that Lisandro Martinez is in contention to return to the matchday squad after overcoming a calf problem. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will be assessed ahead of kick-off.
United won the Carabao Cup against Newcastle last season but have lost each of the three meetings between the sides since.

“It is a massive fixture, we are coming to the end of the season, we are desperate to do well in the game, we will do everything we can to try and win. We back the players to give a performance. We don’t underestimate Manchester United; we know how tough it will be. We are under no illusions of the magnitude of this game. It is a time to enjoy the situation we are in.”

The rain is coming down
It’s raining at Old Trafford and it’s been chucking it down again in M16 on and off for the last couple of hours. There are puddles on the car park but no sign of a roof leaking yet. United have done some firefighting at a time of flooding this week, trying to insist there is no hole in the roof. Or maybe not a very big one. The option of fixing the roof on the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand remains on the table but for now it’s on hold as plans for a new stadium are discussed. One that doesn’t turn into a waterfall. The good news is that the rain is due to stop and some late evening sun will shine on Old Trafford by 8pm.

Ten Hag’s programme notes
Ten Hag talking about how pleased he was with the reaction to Crystal Palace on Sunday and using the opportunity to discuss his own team’s development compared with Arsenal.

Casemiro cannot play at centre back but everyone said that before the Arsenal game. If Willy Kambwala is fit then he should go in next to Jonny Evans. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has performed so incompetently at right back and left back it would be a breath of fresh air and a success story to have Harry Amass in the starting XI.
Sofyan Amrabat deserves to continue in midfield next to Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes has to come in for Scott McTominay as the No.10. If Amad is fit, then he also has to keep his place with Rasmus Hojlund at the tip of the arrow.

Martinez returning to the squad is a major boost for United but he can’t start having not played since February. Casemiro shouldn’t start either so fitness permitting I would go with Evans and Kambwala in defence.
No Casemiro at the back and no Casemiro in midfield. Amrabat did well at the weekend and has added some security to the midfield. That could be a valuable cup final role so he needs to keep building up his confidence. If Fernandes is fit I would bring him in for Mainoo, who looks like he needs a rest.
The same is true of Garnacho. Rashford is another fighting to be fit but if he is he can start, with Amad keeping his place and Hojlund through the middle.

If United are confident enough that Martinez is fit enough to start, he should. It is an enormous game and Ten Hag needs to be able to call upon his best players.
Amrabat deserves to retain his place in midfield after a spirited showing against Arsenal. Fernandes, if he is passed fit, should be recalled and start in the most advanced midfield berth. Mainoo should complete the midfield trio.
In attack, Amad deserves to retain his place after an eye-catching showing on Sunday. He should be joined in attack by Alejandro Garnacho, who was also inventive against Arsenal, and Hojlund.

United get Martinez boost ahead of Newcastle
Lisandro Martinez will return to the United squad for their final home game of the season against Newcastle on Wednesday night.
The centre back has not played since the 1-1 draw with Brentford on March 30 after he sustained a calf injury in a training session.
Martinez has only played 11 times this season due to a second round of surgery on a metatarsal fracture in September, a medial collateral ligament injury to his knee in February and the calf strain.
Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Willy Kambwala will be assessed ahead of the Newcastle match. Kambwala returned from injury as a second-half substitute against Arsenal on Sunday but Fernandes sat out the 1-0 defeat.
Rashford is recovering from bruised ribs and a bruised heel and it is understood he would prefer to delay his return until the game away to Brighton on the final day of the season.
“Licha Martinez: I think he will return to the squad,” United manager Erik ten Hag said. “He’s done some sessions with us and we plan for him to be available if this afternoon everything goes right in training. He will return to the squad.
“For some other players we have to see: Rashford, Bruno, Willy Kambwala, if they are fit enough.”
Raphael Varane confirmed he will leave United at the end of the season after three variable years with the club. Varane has been sidelined since he came off at half-time in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on April 4 but Ten Hag suggested he could return against Brighton.
“We are planning, definitely, for the last games,” Ten Hag said of Varane. “Not tomorrow but we hope for Sunday and then, of course, for the last game.”
Newcastle are three points clear of United in the Premier League table and if they avoid defeat at Old Trafford they are certain to finish above United for the first time since 1977.
“It’s a very important game,” Ten Hag stressed. “You get the ranking, so it’s very important to get the win. We have to do everything in it to get the win and we have to fight hard for it.”

United players have doubts Fernandes will stay
Manchester United players have doubts that Bruno Fernandes will remain at the club next season.
Fernandes, 29, is believed to be receptive to leaving United after four-and-a-half years amid the possibility that the club could fail to qualify for European competition for the first time in ten years. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are understood to be interested.
United would prefer to keep club captain Fernandes, who is under contract until 2026. The club also have the option of an additional year.
Fernandes would also be happy if he stayed at United beyond this season but a hefty offer for the attacking midfielder could tempt United to cash in on Fernandes, who is not among the quartet of players not for sale. Fernandes turns 30 in September but has high resale value due to his form and prominence at club and international level with Portugal.
Fernandes is United’s top scorer this season on 15 goals and he could become only the third player in the club’s history to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award more than twice after David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo.
United manager Erik ten Hag said earlier this month Fernandes would “definitely” see out his contract and was asked about the Portugal international’s future again on Tuesday.
“It’s the same question as last week. So I answered. The same answer,” Ten Hag said.
“Now and in all the years he was [at United], he was a tremendously important player for Man United and creating the most chances across the Premier League. So many assists, so many goals. It’s clear he’s a very important player for us.”
Fernandes joined United from Sporting Lisbon for £67.6m in January 2020 and has scored 79 goals from 230 appearances. He replaced Harry Maguire as the club captain last July.
The Portuguese is recovering from a hand injury that caused him to miss the defeats to Crystal Palace and Arsenal last week. Fernandes will be assessed ahead of the Premier League visit of Newcastle on Wednesday night.
