Manchester United secured a much-needed three points against Newcastle United at Old Trafford tonight.
United’s winless run was extended to three matches on Sunday after they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal and they required a positive result against Newcastle.
The visit of the Magpies promised to be decisive in United’s hopes of qualifying for Europe for next season via their Premier League finishing position – and the Reds came out on top.
Kobbie Mainoo, Amad and Rasmus Hojlund got on the scoresheet, which means United and Newcastle (who have a better goal difference) are now level on points.
United take on Brighton this weekend and Newcastle have Brentford.
Recap what happened at Old Trafford.

Fernandes gives future update amid transfer interest
Bruno Fernandes feels United ‘want him to be part of the future’ at Old Trafford, which means he’d be happy to continue representing the club into next season.
Fernandes signed for United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 and has been the most consistent player in the dressing room since his arrival. The midfielder has developed a strong bond with supporters and was given the captain’s armband by Erik ten Hag last summer.
However, it’s been a difficult season for United and many feel it will take another few years until INEOS’ rebuild could deliver a serious challenge for the Premier League title.
Fernandes has won just the Carabao Cup since signing for United and now aged 29 there’s been a suggestion he could leave this summer in pursuit of silverware.
It’s understood Fernandes is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan ahead of the summer transfer window and he discussed his future after the Newcastle win.
United won 3-2 against Newcastle and Fernandes delivered a committed display, despite only just returning to the starting side after a brief spell on the sidelines with injury.
“I will be here until I’ve said, the club needs to want me,” Fernandes told Sky Sports post-match. “I feel the club wants me to be part of the future, so as I said, I don’t want to be a player the club doesn’t want to have. If for some reason they don’t want to have me, I will go, but…”
Fernandes was stopped from finishing his answer as Ten Hag pulled him away from the broadcaster so he could join in with the team’s lap of honour.

22:24KEY EVENT
Two players are playing their way into FA Cup final team
The United fans were just reciting their chant about Alan Shearer when they were suddenly halted by Amad. The goading was upgraded to cheering.
Regular watchers of United have wondered for months why Amad has been restricted to the role of benchwarmer. In the past week he has demonstrated why the privileges Antony enjoyed under Erik ten Hag were unjustified.
This was Amad’s second goal of the season and minutes away from being his second winner. Until last week, Amad was only introduced whenever United were drawing or losing. Here, they were winning.
The former Sunderland loanee’s goal will have been celebrated with particular gusto on Wearside. Amad savoured his celebration in front of the black-and-white shirts in the away section.
Amad is assured of cult status for his heroism against Liverpool and has been an immeasurable upgrade on the one-paced and one-dimensional Antony. He has dropped the ‘Diallo’ from his name yet the crowd chanted “Amad Diallo”.
This was the first time Amad had started successive matches for United in a season he first appeared in back in December. Omari Forson, due to be released next month, was selected ahead of him in the home defeat to Fulham in February.
Only two United forwards are certain of remaining at the club beyond the closure of the summer transfer window. Amad, a £37million investment on transfer deadline day in 2020, is a talent the incumbent or future United manager should welcome the sight of in their squad.

Ten Hag gives a speech
“On behalf of the players, staff and myself I want to thank you all for the brilliant support during this season.
“As you know it wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team.
“This season is not over yet. First we go to Brighton where we travel for three points and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford.
“We are sure you will be there supporting us – thank you, you are the best supporters in the world.”
22:00KEY EVENT
United player ratings as Amad and Fernandes excellent
Andre Onana
Distributed well as United opted to go long more often than not and cannot be held to account for Anthony Gordon’s goal. Made two key saves at 2-1.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Just about kept up with the livewire Gordon in the first half but never had the measure of the Newcastle winger. 5
Casemiro
Recovered from a rocky start but foiled Gordon and then Dan Burn with a goal line clearance at 1-0. A better day than Sunday. 7
Jonny Evans
Coped admirably up against the admittedly off-colour Alexander Isak. Another fine performance against one of the league’s big hitters. 7
Diogo Dalot
Solid at both ends without making much of a difference but did little wrong all night. 6

21:52KEY EVENT
90+2′ – MUN 3-2 NEW – GOAL! 3-2 NEWCASTLE! (Hall)
Hall scores with an outstanding finish from the edge of the box – that came from nowhere.
21:51STEVEN RAILSTON
90′ – MUN 3-1 NEW – Six minutes added
The smiles on players’ faces suggests they’ve enjoyed this one.
21:49STEVEN RAILSTON
88′ – MUN 3-1 NEW – Eriksen comes on
Fernandes has given everything for the shirt tonight and he’s come off for Eriksen.
21:44KEY EVENT
84′ – MUN 3-1 NEW – GOAL! 3-1 UNITED! (Hojlund)
That’s the goal United needed – Hojlund creates a yard of space and finds the corner.
Dubravka should have done better but Hojludn won’t care.
21:42STEVEN RAILSTON
81′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – The return of Martinez
Martinez, Rashford and Hojlund ON.
Amad, Garnacho and Mainoo OFF.
21:39STEVEN RAILSTON
78′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Martinez and Rashford coming on
Both players have warmed up and are stripping to their kits to come on.
21:37STEVEN RAILSTON
76′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Another Newcastle change
Longstaff has been replaced by Barnes but still no changes from Ten Hag.
21:34STEVEN RAILSTON
73′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – It was almost level
Gordon looked to find the bottom right corner with his shot and Almiron came inches away from getting onto the end of it. The Magpies have pushed hard for an equaliser since falling behind again and ideally, United will kill off their hope by scoring a third goal.
21:31STEVEN RAILSTON
70′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – 20 minutes remaining
United are 20 minutes away from securing a huge three points against league rivals Newcastle.
21:28STEVEN RAILSTON
67′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Two Newcastle chances
Onana makes two strong saves to deny Longstaff and Joelinton in the same sequence. The Longstaff chance was the pick of the pair and he should have done better – Onana held his ground and made a comfortable save in the end. United are now breaking forward.
21:26STEVEN RAILSTON
65′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Another goal would kill this
If United can score again, it would surely kill the game and be enough to secure a huge result. Newcastle are still in this but it’s been frantic since the third goal.

21:23STEVEN RAILSTON
62′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Casemiro booked
He brought down Isak and appealed the decision but it was probably worthy of a yellow card.
21:22STEVEN RAILSTON
60′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – Triple change for Newcastle
Joelinton, Almiron and Schar have come on.
Anderson, Murphy and Trippier have come off.
21:17KEY EVENT
56′ – MUN 2-1 NEW – GOAL! 2-1 UNITED! (Amad)
Amad restores United’s lead not long after Newcastle’s equaliser and what a goal it was.
He lashed home with power from the edge of the box with a thunderous strike.
21:13STEVEN RAILSTON
52′ – MUN 1-1 NEW – Amrabat saves the day
Newcastle were three against one – that man was Amrabat – and they failed to take that chance.
Isak’s shot was deflected onto the bar by Amrabat, who did brilliantly to recover.
21:10STEVEN RAILSTON
51′ – MUN 1-1 NEW – This is a test for United
It’s always difficult conceding so early into the second half and this will test United’s character. They were excellent in the first half and must return to those levels.

21:09KEY EVENT
48′ – MUN 1-1 NEW – GOAL! 1-1 NEWCASTLE! (Gordon)
Newcastle are level after a brilliant equaliser from Gordon, who has looked dangerous.
Gordon’s third goal against United and he’s lapping up chants of ‘you Scouse bastard’.

HALF-TIME! United 1-0 Newcastle
That’s the whistle for the break here at Old Trafford.
United are ahead thanks to Mainoo’s goal.
(Image: 2024 Getty Images)
20:47STEVEN RAILSTON
45′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – Three minutes added
United need half-time because Newcastle have been pushing for an equaliser.
20:45STEVEN RAILSTON
42′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – Newcastle chance
Newcastle’s Bruno had a free header in the box but couldn’t steer it toward goal – that was a chance and the away team have responded well to conceding.
20:42STEVEN RAILSTON
39′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – Casemiro is down
Casemiro has received treatment and looks ok to continue, despite Martinez warming up.
20:39SAMUEL LUCKHURST
37′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – Casemiro clears off the line
Casemiro has had his best two minutes as a centre half with that tackle and clearance. Both were two brilliant pieces of defending.
Howe will be encouraged by Newcastle’s response to Mainoo’s goal as they’ve had two excellent openings and were millimetres away from equalising then. Gordon has been a real nuisance down the left.
Amrabat had had a steady game until his error.

20:36TYRONE MARSHALL
35′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – Mainoo has been superb
It looks like Amad will get the assist for that even though it was a pass intended for Fernandes. He deserves the reward for being bright again. Mainoo is having his best game in a few weeks. His chest control from Onana’s pass a moment before his goal was a reminder of the outstanding technical gifts he possesses.
20:35SAMUEL LUCKHURST
32′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – United deserved that
Ten Hag joined in with the thousands of United fans to put his hands together for Mainoo a few moments ago and he has just done so again. Mainoo has undoubtedly benefited from having Amrabat next to him after the mismatch with Eriksen.
United have merited that after a very rocky start. They’ve played at a good tempo and probed productively.
(Image: 2024 Manchester United FC)
20:33KEY EVENT
30′ – MUN 1-0 NEW – GOAL! 1-0 UNITED! (Mainoo)
Mainoo has looked really sharp tonight and he’s fired United ahead with a simple finish.
He was, somehow, unmarked in the box and left with loads of time to place the ball beyond Dubrvaka into the bottom-left goal. That was an easy goal.
20:28SAMUEL LUCKHURST
27′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Battle of the Brunos
Newcastle have not had much cutting edge about them in the final third and Onana has had a more comfortable night than he should have for the amount of time the ball has been in the United third.
It’s a slight surprise it is still goalless or that neither goalkeeper has made a truly memorable save. Garnacho is starting to get into the game after a poor first 20 minutes but it is becoming a battle of the Brunos.
(Image: 2024 Manchester United FC)
20:28STEVEN RAILSTON
25′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Garnahco chance
Dubravka denies Garnacho with a great save after a wonderful pass from Fernandes down the left.
20:25STEVEN RAILSTON
22′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Decent tempo
We’re over 20 minutes into the game and both sides are playing with a decent tempo. The atmosphere is superb and United fans are responding to the vocal away support.
(Image: 2024 James Gill – Danehouse)
20:20STEVEN RAILSTON
19′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Better from United
This has been much better from United, who are creating chances and looking dangerous.
20:16SAMUEL LUCKHURST
16′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – This is wide open
This game is nothing like it was last season. It is already so stretched and Newcastle have bungled some really good openings in the final third while United are starting to show a bit more about themselves in the final third.
McTominay has done a good job so far in the aerial duels inside and outside the area. United are playing to his strengths more after he was a nonentity at the weekend. Fernandes has given United some much-needed impetus in the front six and Newcastle have been far from watertight.
(Image: 2024 Manchester United FC)
20:13TYRONE MARSHALL
13′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Casemiro with a great pass
That sweeping first-time pass from Casemiro trying to find a run from deep from Fernandes felt like a tactic we saw a lot of last season but have barely seen this term. Casemiro is excellent at those passes and after a shaky start he’s settled down. He did have words with Onana after Newcastle’s corner a few minutes ago. He seemed to want his goalkeeper to come for it.
(Image: 2024 Manchester United FC)
20:12STEVEN RAILSTON
11′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – United open at the back
United’s defensive line split open and Anderson could have played Gordon through, but the pass was overhit and Onana gratefully collected – that was a chance.
20:11SAMUEL LUCKHURST
9′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Fernandes chance
Eddie Howe looks understandably content down below us. Newcastle’s team is not particularly imposing but they’re a unit, they’re intense and they’re up for it. United have been the opposite so far.
That was admirable technique for Casemiro and perhaps the appreciative applause will buoy him. It’s early days but even Dubravka looks better since his ill-judged stint on loan here last season.
20:09STEVEN RAILSTON
7′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Mainoo marked Burn
Newcastle just had a corner and Mainoo was marking Burn, who is a giant.
That was clearly a mismatch and Burn won the header.
20:06STEVEN RAILSTON
5′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – What was Casemiro doing?
I’ve made the point a few times that Casemiro struggles to even make a 10-yard pass now and he just lost the ball in a crucial area. Newcastle drove forward and Gordon almost fashioned a chance, but Amrabat thwarted the danger with an excellent challenge.
(Image: 2024 Getty Images)
20:04SAMUEL LUCKHURST
3′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Newcastle fans in good voice
Ralf Rangnick played Fernandes in a strikerless team two years ago. Fernandes does tend to have an impact wherever he plays but it is usually in a midfield role.
United fans have already belted out their Alan Shearer chant. The away end is a vast upgrade on Sunday’s travelling supporters. The black and whites are vibrantly backed tonight.
20:02TYRONE MARSHALL
2′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – Fernandes false nine
Fernandes playing as a false nine for United, not that the ball has been anywhere near him so far. A poor start and a huge roar from the away end after an early Isak shot. Newcastle on the front foot to begin with.
20:01STEVEN RAILSTON
1′ – MUN 0-0 NEW – KICK-OFF!
We’re under way at Old Trafford. United must deliver an improved showing on their performance against Arsenal because this is another tricky fixture to manoeuvre.

The entire academy squad are in the directors’ box to our left, smartly dressed in their Paul Smith suits.
Harry Maguire is another injured defender who is watching on from the stands.
19:52STEVEN RAILSTON
Not long until kick-off
This should be a cracking game at Old Trafford – we’re minutes away.
19:51TYRONE MARSHALL
United peaked in February 2023
Ten Hag’s greatest moment as United manager came against Newcastle last February and the Carabao Cup triumph at Wembley that ended a six-year trophy drought. It says a lot about his reign that since then they’ve played Newcastle three times, lost three times and failed to score.
19:42SAMUEL LUCKHURST
Hojlund needed a break
Rashford’s preference to return as a starter against Brighton is still on. Some minutes tonight could be prudent if he has fully recovered.
Ten Hag did not mention Hojlund’s form in his rationale for his rest tonight. This is Garnacho’s 36th successive start and Maino
o’s 13th. Those two are as much in need of a breather yet start and there is only one change to the team.
As we have stressed time and again, it was unfair of United to place such an onerous burden on Hojlund.
