Called up to take the penalty after captain Gundogan – the usual taker – was the one scythed down by Ryan Porteous in the penalty area, Havertz’s eventual effort was actually pretty central but Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn was never getting there.
Right out of the Jorginho playbook with the stutter-step to send him the wrong way.

Twice, he has stumbled on the Allianz Arena field and had to steady himself, patting a clump of turf back down after his latest slip. One to keep an eye on.
So far, though, Kroos has enjoyed so much time and space that he can retain the ball even if he falls over beforehand. Something Scotland must fix if they are to enact an unlikely comeback.

Toni Kroos has been a pleasure to watch in the first half.
Diagonals to the right wing, threading passes through Scotland’s midfield to Ilkay Gundogan, him rotating out to the left causes problems for Scotland’s zonal 5-4-1.
McGinn has tried pressing Kroos from out-to-in, curving his run to the touchline to force him inside and away from Mittelstadt.
Though as soon as McGinn started pressing this way, Germany started passing into midfield and then quickly releasing Mittelstadt into space down the left.

Unexpected dominance from Germany

If you have not watched much Germany recently, you could be forgiven for thinking this is all pretty much expected. Not so.
Yes, the friendly wins over France and the Netherlands changed the mood and created, but there has been plenty of fatalism and doubt — about cohesion, about the security, about vulnerability to transitions.
It’s the best 30 minutes of football I’ve seen from Germany in years and there is actually plenty of relief floating around the stadium.

One line from Andy Robertson on the eve of the game was that Scotland, having qualified, have nothing to lose in Germany.
“What’s the worst can happen?” he asked.
The worst-case scenario, he said, was that he and his team-mates join a long list of Scotland teams who have failed to get through the group stage at a major tournament. And of course this always threatened to be their hardest game in the group.
But falling 2-0 down within 20 minutes was the last thing they wanted. It’s vital that they find some kind of foothold in this game rather than fall further adrift.

Apart from that penalty decision being overturned by the VAR, this is going like a dream for Julian Nagelsmann and Germany.
Not only have we seen goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, the two youngsters of whom so much is expected at this tournament, but they are excelling at the kind of vertical football Nagelsmann is renowned for.
Ilkay Gundogan’s contribution in the build-up to that second goal, taking the ball on the turn and threading it through to Kai Havertz, was the perfect illustration.

We have quite a high vantage point from this press box here and it’s been strange to see how little pressure Scotland have put on Toni Kroos.
It might be an illusion perpetuated by how good his touches are and how fast his decisions have been, but without subduing Kroos it is difficult to see how this gets any better for Scotland.

That was the sound of a country buying in for the next few weeks. Gorgeous football from Germany, showing their most talented players at their very best.
Musiala and Wirtz are dropping in and out of the game across the entire width of the pitch, appearing in pockets of space that Scotland just cannot close quickly enough.

Kai Havertz, though perhaps he is more naturally comfortable as a No 10, is up top today.
When Gundogan played the ball through to him so incisively in the lead-up to the second goal, I wondered why he didn’t take on the shot himself, on his stronger left foot. I would have done!
But Havertz knew better – he held it up, paused, and found team-mate Musiala in a better position. Just intelligent decision-making when many attackers would have slashed it towards goal themselves.
I suppose that’s why Havertz is representing his country at a major tournament and I am not.
