Manchester United are reportedly preparing for Amad Diallo to return to the first team squad next season off the back of his stunning loan spell at Sunderland.

The 20-year-old has been earning admirers at the Stadium of Light this season having netted 13 goals in all competitions and helping the Black Cats secure a place in the Championship play-off spots.

The Ivorian signed for United for around £37million in 2021 after joining from Atalanta and has since played nine times for the Red Devils – while also being shipped out to Rangers on loan last year.

Now the club have been encouraged by his recent performances and are ready to welcome him back into the squad ahead of pre-season, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

Diallo could still have three games left to play if Sunderland make it all the way to the play-off final – which takes place on May 27 – but United still plan to invite him to their FA Cup final clash against Manchester City on June 3, the report adds.

Diallo’s Sunderland side will take on Luton in the two-legged semi-final on May 13, with the return leg slated for May 16.

It comes just a month after United boss Erik ten Hag expressed concern over rushing Diallo’s progress, admitting he had ‘reservations’ about his role for next season.

‘We consider everything but I have a little bit of reservation about [recalling Amad] because I don’t want to stop the process,’ said Ten Hag.

‘He has made really good progress there so I’m happy with that.

‘But young players need experiences and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or minimum to come on for a lot of games and make an impact.’

Diallo was brought to Man United by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite being a relatively unknown talent after coming up through Atalanta’s youth system.

He signed a five year deal until 2025 with the option of a further year. His only goal for United came in a last-16 Europa League tie against AC Milan.

Diallo scintillating form has also seen him nominated for the Championship’s young player of the season award and Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has warned United not to let the young talent be lured away by another big club.

‘I have a good feeling for Amad that if he’s not back at United he will go for big, big money to a top Spanish team. He loves football and wants to play so what do you do if you are at Manchester United? ‘ said Mowbray.

‘Are you happy just to be a Manchester United player and play six sub appearances and two starts over a season of 60 games for them? Or do you want to go out and play?

‘So are they going to sell him? If they do they will want to recoup their money which was reputedly 40 euros or whatever it was.

‘I would suggest they would try him at another level and he’d go (on loan) to the Premier League, or go back to Italy or Seria A or Spain.’
