Leny Yoro’s three transfer options after releasing statement on Man Utd bid

Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle with Lille to sign wonderkid defender Leny Yoro – but they could yet face rejection.

Yoro, 18, has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers following an impressive campaign in the French top flight. Spanish giants Real Madrid have long been considered the favourites in the race but United have attempted to steal a march, settling on a fee of €50million (£42m) as the France under-21 international crucially enters the final year of his contract.

Lille are therefore under pressure to cash in on Yoro, who attended Madrid’s Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley last month. But as Sky Sports explain, the reigning European and Spanish champions are yet to meet Lille’s valuation with any of their offers.

Should Madrid equal or better United’s bid, Yoro will have a decision to make among three options. Firstly, the 18-year-old could decide to remain at Lille and spend next season in Ligue 1.

From then, Yoro could either leave on a free transfer in 2025 to a club of his choosing or sign an improved contract. He may, however, want to join United, who despite agreeing personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt are still looking to sign a second centre-back.

A fake social media account impersonating Yoro ‘rejected’ a move to Old Trafford on Tuesday, writing: “I don’t want you @ManUtd. Leave me alone.” The man himself then stepped via his official account, replying: “Fake account. You guys are psycho. Signal this account.”

Thirdly, Yoro could surprise no one and sign for Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who’ve already sealed the long-awaited arrival of Kylian Mbappe this summer, are keen to sign a new centre-back following the departure of captain Nacho Fernandez.

It’s no wonder clubs of United and Madrid’s calibre are interested in Yoro when he’s been dubbed ‘the new William Saliba ‘. Recently-departed Lille manager Paulo Fonseca heaped praise on the starlet last season, saying: “It’s not normal to have an 18-year-old player like Leny with this maturity and the technical qualities he has.

“For me, he will be one of the best central defenders in France and probably in Europe. He is very balanced, and there is no doubt that he will be a very great player.”
