Arsenal continue their summer preparations for the new season with a clash against a far stronger opponent than in their previous game. Bournemouth held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw just a few days ago and Mikel Arteta will want to secure a win over Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag infamously went with the tagline of Manchester United โ€œdonโ€™t play friendliesโ€ when the teams met last year, which saw the Red Devils secure victory. It created an edge to the game and tensions were higher than usual for an exhibition match.

Arsenalโ€™s rivalry with the Dutch coach saw revenge in the form of back-to-back league wins over United in the league and while the Gunners finished with their best league total since 2004, Ten Hag oversaw the worst Premier League finish ever. Arteta has seen Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli return to the group with expected soon-to-be new signing Riccardo Calafiori due to fly in soon.

Kaya Kaynak and Tom Canton bring build-up and coverage from the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Updates to follow.

Full-time – Arsenal 2-1 Man United

Stay with us for the penalty shootout that will follow. No matter the score, it was always going to take place.

Very good performance from Arsenal and much better compared to a couple of days ago. Standout displays from Nwaneri, Jesus, Nelson, Odegaard and Salah-Eddine with a great goal from Martinelli too.

Penalties to come…

Ball in the net but…

United player bundles Hein over from a corner and Evans heads into an empty net but the referee is having none of that.

02:58Tom Canton

Nichols impressing

Josh Nichols is again impressing at right-back since coming on. Spritely and tenacious, he has won a few duels and taken some runs forward. Exciting player.

02:53Key Event

GOAL! Arsenal 2-1 Man United

That is the best from Martinelli!

Picking up the ball on the left, he takes a few touches before driving centrally, perpendicular to the edge of the penalty box on the left side, and then he strikes low so early that Onana does not expect it and it squeezes under the keeper. Hopefully a signal of things to come.

02:45Tom Canton

Vital interception

So close for Havertz to score. Martinelli great run and cross but Eriksen gets his boot in first.

02:42Tom Canton

Big Gabi!

Two big challenges made from Gabriel at the back. First the cross is cut out by the Brazilian before he dives in front of Eriksen’s long range strike.

Changes made. Jesus, Odegaard and Nelson are off. Nketiah, Martinelli and Havertz come on.

02:39Tom Canton

Loose touch

Great bursting run from Jesus but the meaningful touch at the end allowed Man United to nick the ball away from Jesus. A chance has gone.

02:35Tom Canton

Changes

Nichols, Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel, Vieira and Partey are on.

White, Jorginho, Timber, Trossard and Zinchenko are off.

02:34Tom Canton

Wide

Antony has his first sighter at goal in the game. His debut goal of course came against Arsenal but it has effectively been downhill since then and that shot will not have helped.

02:31Tom Canton

BIG SAVE!

Big moment for Trossard after some great footwork from the Belgian. Trossard drifts to the right, Odegaard fades a pass inside, he cuts back and strikes high and Onana palms it behind for a corner.

That is then clear by Evans.

02:29Tom Canton

Quiet start

Not much has happened so far this half. The changes have disrupted any of the momentum from the opening period. Arsenal dominating the ball and the United kids trying to counter where possible.

02:17Tom Canton

Second half!

Here we go! Huge number of changes for Manchester United, most of the team have come off.

Arsenal have also made changes. Oulad M’Hand seems to have come on for Nwaneri. Kiwior is on for Heaven.

02:06Tom Canton

Jesus the forgotten man shows up

Arsenal’s pre-season is well underway with the Gunners taking on Manchester United in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday (UK time).

Mikel Arteta named a strong starting line-up to face Erik ten Hag’s side, with Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jorginho, Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus among those starting the first half. It was the Red Devils who went ahead, however, as Rasmus Hojlund made no mistake from close range after turning young defender Ayden Heaven.

It could have been Arsenal taking the lead at the SoFi Stadium, though, as Jesus had a wonderful opportunity inside the first minute. The Brazilian found himself racing through on goal and into the Man Utd box after a mistake by new United signing Leny Yoro.

Half-time

Level here but a great game so far. Nwaneri has stood out and helped to level the score for Jesus.

Injuries have hit United with goalscorer Hojland and exciting youngster Yoro off. The second half is to come in 15 minutes so stay tuned!

01:56Tom Canton

Big block

Jurrien Timber has slid in with a big block to stop another goal here. His awareness has been fantastic in these past two games.

01:52Tom Canton

Great movement

Arsenal have found their vibe now and are passing and moving like it is the middle of the season. Great movement and touches by the team. The final ball is a little lacking however.

01:45Tom Canton

Leny Yoro off

Another injury issue for Man United as their big-money signing comes off and Bennett comes on.

01:39Tom Canton

Hein save!

Man United want their lead back and Mason Mount is released in the box by Amad. He strikes at goal and the Estonian has to be equal to it!

01:37Key Event

GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Man United (Jesus)

Arsenal have their leveller. Great play from the left-hand side as Nwaneri crosses perfectly for the Brazilian!

01:36Tom Canton

More chances

Gabriel Jesus turns away from Maguire with ease and tries the square but United clear. Odegaard picks up and tries a shot but sees it blocked.

01:32Tom Canton

Odegaard down

Really nasty landing for Odegaard. Looks like it could be his shoulder.

He’s back to his feet and considering the replays, it is wonderous that he seems good to carry on.

01:24Tom Canton

Over – Hojlund

Another break from United, down the right this time. Wan-Bissaka manages to get a low cross in and White does enough to force Hojlund into an awkward shot.

He has however seemingly injured his hamstring and is coming off here. Hannibal is coming on.

01:21Key Event

Goal! Arsenal 0-1 Man United

Rasmus Hojlund gives United the lead again in Los Angeles.

Long ball forward and Hojlund has the beating of the young defender Heaven, his low shot goes between Hein’s legs. Game on.

01:21Tom Canton

Nwaneri forces the save

The flag is up but Nwaneri did some brilliant great work to find a way into the United box. The pass back came too late and he strayed but great showcase of skill, passing and pace too.

01:17Tom Canton

Hein save

An early chance for United. Hein however manages to get his body in the way of the shot from Amad as Arsenal struggle to break out of defence.

01:15Tom Canton

Zinchenko mistake

Few sloppy passes and now Zinchenko sells Jorginho short and the Italian is forced to take down Mount. United free-kick inside the Arsenal half to follow.

01:12Tom Canton

Jesus chance

Yoro makes a mistake at the back and Jesus nicks it off him. Running into the box he is tackled at the last and the youngster gets a big let off.

Arteta on Smith Rowe’s absence

โ€œThere are things happening behind the scenes, and we decided the best thing to do was to leave him off the field.โ€

Smith Rowe exit hint

Emile Smith Rowe has been left out of Arsenal’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Manchester United at the SoFi Stadium.

Smith Rowe, 23, is on the brink of signing for Fulham, football.london understands. An agreement to sell the academy graduate for a fee of up to ยฃ35million is understood to be in place.

The midfielder was left on the bench for the Gunners’ friendly draw with AFC Bournemouth in the week. “Things are happening in the background, and we decided the best thing to do was leave him out,” Mikel Arteta replied when quizzed about Smith Rowe.

They’re back!

Mikel Arteta’s squad for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the USA has been bolstered by the arrivals of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes and Kai Havertz.

The two Gabis had been involved with Brazil during their Copa America campaign. It was an unfortunate quarter-final exit for the Selecao, and after three weeks’ break they have arrived from their holidays in south America.

Havertz meanwhile was involved heavily as Germany reached the quarter-finals of their home Euros. The 25-year-old scored twice en route to the last eight for his country before being cruelly knocked out by Spain after a late goal from his potential future teammate Mikel Merino.

Line-up thoughts

Arsenal have a stronger team than their clash with Bournemouth a few days ago. It will be interesting to see both Nwaneri and Odegaard combine together tonight.

There are plenty of question marks over whether this midfield has a place for Nwaneri, tonight will give us some indication. It is good to see Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes back with the squad.

Man United’s very own William Saliba, Yoro, well that’s what some of their fans have said, also starts. How will he cope with the Arsenal forwards?

00:06Tom Canton

Leandro Trossard interview

Leandro Trossard is used to high pressure situations. World Cups, Champions League knockouts, Premier League title deciders, heโ€™s done them all. A game of a pool against a team of five journalists, however, is a new test.

The journalists break, and instantly pot the whiteโ€ฆ Trossard is calm and measured as he races into an early lead, using his two shots to pot one of the stripes. It is this mindset that has served him well more generally in his time at Arsenal.

He arrived after weeks of speculation surrounding the Gunners’ well-publicised pursuit of Mykhailo Mudryk, which ended with the Ukrainian joining Chelsea. For many others this could have added extra pressure to succeed, but Trossard didnโ€™t see it that way.

What’s going on at Chelsea?

Chelsea were beaten by Celtic in another poor pre-season performance. Four goals were conceded, and a sole penalty scored.

Arsenal will hope to bring similar misery to United in the early hours.

Who will sign next after Calafiori?

Riccardo Calafiori looks set to be announced as an Arsenal player in the coming days with the defender expected to join up with his new teammates in the United States.

The Gunners have agreed a deal worth around ยฃ38million with Bologna for the Italian, football.london understands. The 22-year-old can play at either left-back or centre-back and will add further quality to the Gunners back line.

With Euro 2024 and Copa America now concluded, more deals are expected to be thrashed out as players return from their holidays ahead of the new 2024/25 season. So, who should Arsenal look to sign next? football.london’s writers have their say below.
