Ugarte could even fly to Manchester on Tuesday for his medical, with the club confident of completing his deal before Friday’s deadline. The 23-year-old could even make his debut when they face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend.

United’s deal for Ugarte will be partly financed by the sale of Scott McTominay after they agreed a deal to sell him to Napoli for an initial fee of roughly £25m. The Scotland international could undergo his medical with the Italian club on Tuesday.

Ugarte might not only replace McTominay in the United first-team squad, he could also end up inheriting his shirt number as well. During his club career, Ugarte has worn the No.4, No.8, No.14, No.15 and No.20, numbers that are already occupied at Old Trafford.

He also won’t be able to wear any of the squad numbers he has had at international level either. During his time in the national side, Ugarte has worn No.5, No.6, No.15, No.17, No.20 and No.25. The only one of those he could wear at United would be the No.25 shirt if indeed Jadon Sancho leaves before deadline day.

The other notable option for Ugarte would be the No.26, which was his first ever squad number in professional football during his time with CA Fenix. It has been vacant at Old Trafford ever since Dean Henderson left a year ago. He could also be assigned the No.2 shirt if Victor Lindelof leaves before deadline day.

Manuel Ugarte squad number options

No.2 (If Lindelof leaves), No.13, No. 19, No. 25 (If Sancho leaves), No.27, No.28, No.29, No.39 (If McTominay leaves)
