Manchester United drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening, as a dominant performance failed to ease the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

The away side dominated the first half, taking the lion’s share of possession but only managing to hit the woodwork twice after a great effort from Alejandro Garnacho and a rebound from Bruno Fernandes.

The second half began in much the same manner, with United keeping control but not managing to capitalise on it.

Palace grew into the game after making substitutions, while United’s changes took away their momentum, and the home side begun to create chances, with Eberechi Eze firing wide and Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr forcing a brilliant double save from Andre Onana.

The game petered out in the final stages as Palace looked to settle for a point and United struggled to regain any attacking rhythm, and in the end it was a familiar sight for Erik ten Hag as his side earned just one point in a fixture they probably should’ve won.

Tomorrow’s games

A potentially huge day in the Premier League title race tomorrow, as Arsenal travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City at 4.30pm.

Before that though, Brighton host Nottingham Forest in the earlier kick-off.

More reaction from Oliver Glasner:

“In the same way Dean Henderson made some good saves in the first half, Onana made a great double save in the second and then Eberechi missed a chance.

“We have to be honest, maybe three points would have been too much but we would have taken them.

”Yes a lot to build on. This week we had three games and not a lot of training time, but now we have two whole weeks for us. The international players of course need a few days to rest but I think we now we start to build on that second half.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner speaking to Sky Sports:

“In the first half Dean Henderson kept us alive and kept us in the game. At the end of the half we had the chance from Eberechi and then in the second half we were much, much better. In the first half we needed a great goalkeeper and fortunately we had one today.

“In the second half we were more organised, we played with more courage and we had two great situations to win the game. In that second half it was more like a Crystal Palace team and that is what we need to be competitive against a team like Manchester United.

”I have never seen my Crystal Palce team play like we did in the first half, with no energy, no confidence, both in and out of possession, in set plays etcetera.

“That shows again the spirit we have to make adjustments at half time, switch to a 3-5-2 to close the centre, and then we controlled the game and had our chances in their box. Even when we won the ball we were more direct, played forward more in the second half.”

More reaction from Erik ten Hag

“That is very difficult for a goalie to be there in the moment you needed, Dean Henderson also played a very good game, how many balls he stopped. He was in a rhythm, but Andre has to wait and keep the focus and in the right moment, you have to be spot on and did brilliant.

“In Brighton, we should have drawn or even win the game there, so we lost three points. Today, we also probably lose two points because of the first half, but the thing is that we don’t lose this game in the end.

“We have worked very hard as a team to be defensive, compact. We’ve worked on pressing and you see the benefits from it but also, on the ball, we are very constructive and we have control and that also, we take the breath of the opponent away.”

Post match reaction from Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag talking to Sky Sports: “When we don’t win, I’m not content. We should have won. I think first half, we ate them alive. Then in the second half, it was more in the balance but first half, we should have scored one or two goals.

“We played very good. Total control of the game. In and out of possession, I think we played very good. The only thing was in the box, that is where the game is always decided. We should be more clinical there.

“It’s always one chance and they got the chance at the 44th minute, it was a big chance [that] they got. By that time, we should have been 2-0, 3-0 up.

“They closed the midfield more and they had some good counter attacks, so it was more difficult. The first place for us to get through and the flip side is then they got more space and they had some good counters. I think it was a brilliant save from Andre Onana twice in one action, it was really brilliant.”

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who earned the man of the match award, also spoke to Sky Sports, and he said that “in the end it was [a good point]”.

“We missed a couple of key opportunities. There was one in the second half where we could have scrambled the ball over the line, Andre Onana made a great save and we were unlucky in the end.

“I think it was certainly a game of two halves. After the first half we will take the point and be delighted with it.

“I think we were attacking the game to win it and we had a game plan to do so. I don’t think it quite worked in the first half. We made some tweaks in the second half, which made us more aggresive and on the front foot, and that gave us more success in the second half.

He adds that Glasner “spoke about the intensity and belief”.

“He was frustrated with the way we were playing, he felt we were being too cautious. He said to take the safety cap off and go for it.

“Nights like tonight as the underdog you’ve got nothing to lose, so you have to go for it.”

FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was the first to speak to Sky Sports.

He says that he does not “think it [his best save] is so important because we didn’t win”.

“We are such a big club. When have the ambition to try to win. We didn’t win but I’m happy for the work, the sacrifice of my teammates because I think we were better than them.

“We had so many chances but unfortunately, we didn’t score. It’s difficult to come back with one point when we deserved to win.”

He says that he did think United would score. “Football sometimes, you can’t control everything.

“We were coming in, we had more chances and I had faith always in my guys. Today, we hit the crossbar twice and hopefully in the coming games, we will score a lot.”

“I think we were better than them, I think we were way better than them. We had more chances than them. We had the best chances during the game. Of course, they are a very good team, but we were way better than them.”

“It’s always nice to keep a clean sheet but the most important thing, especially playing for Manchester United, you have to win. We didn’t win today, but we came here with the mentality [to win]. We will go back home disappointed.”

FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Man Utd

Some match stats for you now.

Manchester United have kept four clean sheets in their last six Premier League games – one more than they managed in their previous 24.

This was just the fourth goalless draw the side have had under Erik ten Hag in the Premier League, and the first since playing Liverpool in December 2023.

Of the teams they have faced more than 10 times in the Premier League, United have drawn 0-0 in a higher percentage of their games against Crystal Palace than against anyone else (16 per cent, with 5 out of 31 games).

Palace have not won any of their first five games in the Premier League this season. This is the fifth time that has happened, and they have been relegated in three of the previous four – 1992/93, 1994/95 and 2004/05.

FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Man Utd

So, an entertaining draw comes to an end in south London, but it’s more questions for United as a mixture of poor fortune and poor finishing denies them a win in a game they dominated. At times, they were perhaps lucky to not concede, with a superb double save from Onana keeping the scores level late on.

For Palace, it’s a point that they will be happy with, though they will feel they could have come away with a win in the end. Oliver Glasner’s changes did make a difference too, keeping Palace in it and altering the balance of the match.
