The Boston Red Sox could still use another starting pitching despite the acquisition of All-Star Garrett Crochet.
Crochet’s addition should be a huge lift for Boston and give the club the left-handed star it needs. But, the Red Sox need to compete against powerhouses like the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.
If the Red Sox are going to add another starter, the best option clearly is Corbin Burnes. He entered free agency as the best pitcher available on the open market. It seems very likely that he will land a deal north of $200 million after Max Fried got $218 million from the Yankees.
Will the Red Sox bring Burnes to town in response? There has been a lot of chatter about the two sides, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan’s latest comments could be a bad sign for Boston. He took a look at the free agent and trade markets and gave his latest updates on them.
Passan took a look at Burnes’ market and only mentioned the Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Francisco Giants.
“Burnes’ suitors include the Giants, Blue Jays, and Orioles, and because of his bona fides — four All-Star appearances, a Cy Young Award, and the second-best ERA in MLB over the past half-decade at 2.88 — ruling out others engaging would be premature,” Passan said.
Until Burnes signs somewhere, anything could happen. It’s nice that Passan noted that ruling others out would be “premature,” so a deal isn’t completely ruled out. Boston has the money needed to afford him, but the fact that he mentioned the other three teams instead of the Red Sox could be a bad sign.

Phillies sign former 36-HR hitter in free agency
The Philadelphia Phillies are adding some more lefty power to their lineup. Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reported Thursday that the Phillies are signing veteran outfielder Max Kepler to a one-year deal. Jeff Passan of ESPN adds that Kepler’s contract will be worth $10M. Kepler, 31, had been with the Minnesota Twins for his entire 10-year MLB career up to this point. He is a career .237 hitter who had a 36-homer, 90-RBI season in 2019. Last season for the Twins though, Kepler saw his year end early because of patellar tendinitis in his left knee and finished with a modest eight homers and 42 RBI on a .253 batting average in 105 games. Primarily a right fielder, Kepler could platoon with the righty-hitting Nick Castellanos at the position. Castellanos may potentially move to left field as well (where he has some career experience) or otherwise now be traded by the Phillies (which has been rumored in recent weeks).

Paul Finebaum names CFP team with no chance at a national championship
The 12-team College Football Playoff kicks off this weekend, with the first-round games beginning on Friday. Meanwhile, four teams will have to wait to find out their opponents for the quarterfinals, having earned byes for winning their respective conferences. One of those teams is the No. 3 Boise State Broncos (12-1), which won the Mountain West and is the third-highest-ranked conference champion. The Broncos will await the winner of the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2) and the SMU Mustangs (11-2). The Broncos are enjoying an outstanding season under the leadership of head coach Spencer Danielson and running back Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty secured the second spot for the Heisman Trophy after amassing 2,497 rushing yards and scoring 29 touchdowns. He is only 132 yards shy of eclipsing Oklahoma State Cowboys’ Barry Sanders’ all-time single-season yardage record. Despite a strong season, Paul Finebaum stated on “The Paul Finebaum Show” that Boise State has no chance of winning a national championship. “Boise State’s got a really good team, but they’re small,” Finebaum said. “There is no way that they could deal with the best of this bracket.” ESPN’s Football Power Index aligns closely with Finebaum’s views, offering the Broncos a 1.8% chance of winning the national championship. This figure, tied with the Arizona State Sun Devils, is higher only than that of the No. 12 ranked Clemson Tigers (10-3) among playoff teams. Nevertheless, the FPI places Boise State at No. 25 in the country, marking it the lowest rank of any playoff contender. This season, the Broncos faced one playoff contender when they took on the No. 1 Oregon Ducks (13-0) on the road. The game ended in a close 37-34 loss for the Broncos. Jeanty impressively rushed for 192 yards and scored three touchdowns. Notably, the Broncos outgained the Ducks, recording 369 yards compared to Oregon’s 352, forcing two turnovers. However, special teams proved crucial; in the fourth quarter, Oregon tied the game at 34 with a touchdown on a 100-yard kickoff return. Subsequently, they secured the victory with a 25-yard field goal as time expired. Earlier in the game, Oregon also scored on an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown. This week, Boise State will take a break before gearing up for its first playoff game on Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Darren Dreger reveals major update on Mitch Marner’s contract negotiations
TSN’s Darren Dreger has revealed an update on the status of Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner’s pending free agency. The recent report from Dreger indicates that the Leafs have a plan for whether or not Marner will be back, but they aren’t rushing to force a deal early in the season. Dreger has reported that while the Leafs front office wishes to re-sign Mitch Marner, at this time, the team isn’t focusing too much on the numbers size of locking up Marner. According to Darren Dreger, the Leafs are letting Marner play out the rest of 2024 and focusing toward his on-ice performance, having 2025 be the year the team begins getting into serious discussion on Marner’s future. Marner has 10 goals and a team-leading 32 assists and 42 points in 32 games played for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. Leafs not focused on urgency in Mitch Marner extension discussions The Toronto Maple Leafs seem to not be overly focused on getting a deal signed with Mitch Marner as soon as possible. The Leafs know they have Marner for the rest of the season, and the probability of a trade is incredibly low. If the Leafs were to move on from Marner, it wouldn’t happen this season as they’re a contending team, leaving them able to see the season out, or at least wait until they’re in a safe place in the standings to pull the trigger on an extension. Agent Darren Ferris has not been an easy customer for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the past, as evident in the difficult extension talks last time back in 2019, which ended when Marner signed a six-year contract extension by the time Toronto started training camp. Toronto also has a second priority in the re-signing of John Tavares, looking likely that the former captain will take a deal in the near future. If Tavares signs an extension soon, and for a team-friendly deal, it then positions the Toronto Maple Leafs to go full throttle in their focus on Marner’s future.

Packers insider shares negative Quay Walker observation after practice
For the first time in quite a while, the Green Bay Packers only have five players on their injury report. Ever since the 2024 NFL season started, it has seemed like Green Bay has always had a plethora of players injured and expected to miss games. Of course, the Packers do not use injuries as an excuse. They have a “next man up” philosophy, one that has helped them achieve a 10-4 record thus far this year. Most notably, two-time cornerback Jaire Alexander was listed as a full participant in practice both on Wednesday and Thursday. Of course, that was the case last week as well and Alexander still did not play against the Seattle Seahawks. Alexander, of course, is still trying to come back from a torn PCL he suffered against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Corey Ballentine, who is dealing with a knee injury, was listed as a limited participant on Thursday. Luke Musgrave, who is still on injured reserve after needing ankle surgery, was also a limited participant. Rookie safety Javon Bullard and third-year linebacker Quay Walker did not participate. Green Bay Packers insider reveals Quay Walker is in a walking boot Walker left the game against Seattle with an ankle injury and did not return. While he has not been put on injured reserve, Matt LaFleur said earlier this week that the starting linebacker is more week-to-week than day-to-day. On Thursday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic shared an observation from practice that seems to confirm that assessment: This certainly does not bode well for Walker’s availability for “Monday Night Football” when the Packers take on the New Orleans Saints. Despite the criticism that he frequently receives from fans, there is no denying the fact that Walker is a huge part of the defense. Losing him may result in more snaps for Edgerrin Cooper, the reigning NFC Defensive Player of the Week, but it also means that the linebacker position is still lacking in depth. Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker has had a solid 2024 NFL season Walker has had his struggles this season. However, he has also shown flashes of the player the Packers envisioned when they took him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. That being said, his missed tackle percentage is 7.8%, the highest of his career thus far. It is worth noting, though, that one of the biggest criticisms of the Joe Barry defense, the scheme Walker had to play in for his first two seasons, required a great deal of thinking ahead. This season, the Jeff Hafley scheme asks players to react quickly and think less. Oftentimes, Walker is still overthinking. Still, the third-year linebacker has 102 tackles and has tied his career-high with 2.5 sacks this year. While he may not be a superstar, he is still a valuable contributor to the defense. Green Bay will miss him for as long as he is out.
