Braden Montgomery is still set to make his debut for the Sox, just not the ones up in Boston that drafted him 12th overall in the MLB Draft this past July.

The Chicago White Sox traded their ace pitcher, left-hander Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox and received Montgomery, as well as catcher Kyle Teel, infielder Chase Meidroth, and RHP Wikelman Gonzalez.

Crochet made his debut for the White Sox in September of 2020 and was named an MLB All-Star this past season, as well as the 2024 AL Comeback Player of the Year.

The Red Sox finally were able to make a deal happen for a hot free agent after missing out on the Juan Soto, Max Fried, and Nathan Eovaldi sweepstakes, who signed with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers, respectively.

Crochet’s 35.1% strikeout rate in 2024 was the sixth highest by a pitcher in a season all-time and third highest by a left-handed pitcher, behind Randy Johnson in 2001 and Chris Sale in 2017.

Montgomery is still yet to receive the call up from the big leagues, but with his statement year in Aggieland that saw him crush 27 home runs and lead the Aggies to the College World Series, he could be receiving the call anytime now.

While the Braves have remained quiet on the free agent front, it’s not hard to see why Alex Anthopoulos has been hesitant. Willy Adames signed a deal with the Giants at a rate that far exceeded what anyone in Atlanta thought the Braves would offer. The outfield market is also developing, with Juan Soto signing a record-breaking deal to join the Mets. However, no market is more inflated than the starting pitching market, with Max Fried being the latest starter to ink a free-agent deal, a contract north of $200 million over eight years to join the Yankees. That followed eye-popping figures from Nathan Eovaldi, Luis Severino and others that just don’t align with the Braves M.O., but that doesn’t mean a blockbuster acquisition can’t come to fruition. Alex Anthopoulos is at his best with his back against the wall in need of an ace up his sleeve, and that ace could be a former Braves trade target who is once again back on the trade block. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune suggested that the Padres are anywhere from actively “trying to unload” Dylan Cease to just “open to offers” on him. The Athletic’s Dennis Lin described the situation as San Diego “at least exploring” Cease’s trade value. Once upon a time, MLB insider Bob Nightengale described the Braves as the favorites to land Dylan Cease when the White Sox were shopping the Georgia native, and while the Padres ended up winning those sweepstakes, Alex Anthopoulos confirmed the Braves were interested. Cease started 33 games for the Padres in 2024, owning a 3.47 ERA and finishing the season with 224 strikeouts and a career-best 1.07 WHIP en route to a fourth-place finish in the National League Cy Young Award voting. MLB Trade Rumors projects Dylan Cease to make $13.7 million in his final year of arbitration before testing free agency next offseason. The Braves would likely prefer to trade for a starter and extend him rather than paying sticker price in free agency. Cease could definitely be an option.

Odell Beckham Jr. entered 2024 expecting to serve as a complementary option in the Dolphins’ offense, but his role has still been smaller than anticipated. The veteran wideout will now see his Miami tenure come to an end. Beckham asked to be let go, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The Dolphins will grant the request, he adds, meaning a move to the waiver wire will be forthcoming. Beckham is seeking an increased role on his next team, while playoff contenders may show interest in him as an insurance option for the stretch run. The Dolphins have now officially placed Beckham on waivers, where he will remain until Monday. That will give teams plenty of time to contemplate putting in a claim; failing that, Beckham will become a free agent. The 32-year-old has made nine appearances since being activated from the PUP list in October. Over that span, however, he has registered only nine catches for 55 scoreless yards while handling a 20% snap share. Those figures could lead to several teams steering clear with respect to a waiver claim, although as Pelissero’s colleague Mike Garafolo notes, Beckham is only owed roughly $200K for the rest of the campaign and is not on track to hit any incentive thresholds. The three-time Pro Bowler had a lengthy free agency spell this past offseason as he recovered from a knee operation. He took on a one-year Dolphins deal with a base value of $3M in anticipation of handling WR3 duties on his latest team. With that not being the case, team and player will move on as Miami seeks to remain in contention for a wild-card berth. The Dolphins’ offense has generally been less reliant on Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in 2024 than in years past, although over the past two games that pairing has served as the focal point of the offense. Beckham had a one-and-done stint with the Ravens last season, one in which he posted a career-high 16.1 yards per catch. Unsurprisingly, he was unable to secure anywhere near the $15M he received in 2023 on his most recent pact, but this campaign can nevertheless be considered a disappointment. A small window of opportunity will exist for Beckham to rebuild his value to an extent if he manages to catch on with a team for the closing stages of the season, though. The former Rams Super Bowl winner said he was considering retirement ahead of the 2023 campaign. He has managed one more contract since then, but his status following the current season (regardless of if it includes an opportunity with another team) will be worth watching concerning his career outlook.

Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard sustained an injury at the end of last night’s game against the Minnesota Wild, and a former Referee has commented on the lack of a penalty call and potential supplemental discipline. In the final minutes of last night’s game, Bouchard took a hit from Wild forward Ryan Hartman a few feet away from the net, sending him crashing down and in pain on the bench. Thankfully, early reports on Bouchard’s condition seem to be positive. According to Frank Seravalli, the Oilers defender was limping while walking out, but still a positive sign that he’s moving on his own. Coach Knoblauch has said there will be more medical evaluations tomorrow, but the Oilers seem to have avoided a worst case scenario. Former NHL Referee Comments on Non-Call for Ryan Hartman hit against Evan Bouchard Unbelievably, there was no penalty call on the play. Some are calling for a suspension for Ryan Hartman, but at least, there should have been a penalty. Dave Jackson, a former referee and current rules analyst for ESPN, didn’t say that Hartman may see a suspension, but that there was a missed interference penalty. Hartman making that check to Bouchard, even has they approach a loose puck, could be acceptable in many other areas of the ice. However, making that hit in close proximity to the net and boards, it’s an avoidable hit on a player in a vulnerable position. Hartman’s hit doesn’t really meet the grounds for suspension. It’s a hit in a dangerous area, but it was a shoulder to shoulder contact, and Bouchard seemed to mostly be hurt on his tumble down to the ice. Evan Bouchard has been having another fantastic season, scoring 6 goals and 22 points in 29 games. President Jeff Jackson recently committed to re-signing Bouchard when he becomes a restricted free agent this summer. Hopefully Bouchard avoided any serious injury, and is able to suit up for the Oilers game tomorrow against the Vegas Golden Knights.

A new video of John Tortorella is going viral, this time for his reaction when he learned that Matvei Michkov signed an autograph after being ejected from a game. On Sunday, 24 hours after John Tortorella went after the officials in a news conference, the rookie Matvei Michkov was ejected after a massive scrum in the game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Utah Hockey Club. In the final minute of the game, Michkov didn’t shy away from throwing a few punches and trash-talking his opponents despite being surrounded by referees. On his way to the locker room, he stopped to sign an autograph to a fan. When he was ejected, Michkov didn’t think he’d get the chance to do it after the game, so he stopped to do it on his way to the bench. The only thing is that his head coach John Tortorella, who’s known for his old-school style, didn’t see it when it happened, and learned it from a reporter in a press conference. The 20-year-old forward is on a point-per-game pace, with 27 points in 27 games, the highest total among this year’s rookies. In a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, he had two assists, including this one, where he showed great skills on Morgan Frost’s goal: The Flyers are in fifth place in the Metropolitan Division, now boasting a 13-12-4 record.
