Insider shares why Pete Alonso remains unsigned amid Mets, Yankees whispers
As stories continue to link free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso with a return to the New York Mets and a possible move to the New York Yankees following the Mets’ historic signing of All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, Alonso remains available amid reports claiming the offseason market for the slugger has thus far “been quiet.” On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan shared an update on why no club has yet handed Alonso a contract to his liking. “His profile frightens teams,” Passan said about Alonso. “A 30-year-old, right-handed-hitting and -throwing first baseman. Teams are hesitant to give him a long-term deal. At the same time, they see great value in adding him for the next few years. The Mets could still bring him back. The Yankees could enter the fray more aggressively.” While SNY manager of editorial production Danny Abriano has routinely named the Mets the favorites to win Alonso’s signature, Jimmy Hascup of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com noted that popular sports-talk radio host Rich Eisen reported on Wednesday that the “Polar Bear” is “not on the Yankee radar screen” even though the Bronx Bombers have a need at the position. “They’re not going to sign somebody for multiple, long-time years to stick at first base. That’s what I heard,” Eisen added. Eisen later revealed that he had “been told the Yankees have zero interest in Pete Alonso.” It appears Eisen may have some inside information. For a piece published Thursday, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com reported that “Alonso appears to be a longshot” for the Yankees. If previous whispers that suggested Alonso wants to stay in the New York area since he’s played only for the Mets since he made his MLB debut in 2019 are accurate, he may ultimately have to give the Amazins somewhat of a discount in the form of a short-term agreement. Alonso is a beloved Mets fan-favorite who is just 27 home runs shy of becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in that category. The fact that he pressed throughout last season has seemingly impacted his ability to land the type of contract he wanted back in March, and he may soon need to decide how much longer he’s willing to gamble that Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns won’t go in a different direction. “Sometimes, markets just take time to build,” Passan said about Alonso’s free-agency journey, “but the risk in waiting is that they never do.”

Prayers Pouring In For Legendary Wrestler Rey Mysterio
The wrestling community received heartbreaking news this Friday involving the uncle of WWE legend Rey Mysterio. Mysterio’s uncle, Rey Misterio Sr., has passed away at the age of 66. The late wrestler’s son confirmed this tragic news with a post on Facebook. For those unfamiliar with Mysterio’s uncle, he started competing in the ring in 1976 before retiring in 2009. Eventually, his nephew, Rey Mysterio, went on to become one of the best cruiserweight wrestlers the sports entertainment business has ever seen, winning the World Heavyweight Championship and earning a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame. His grandson is also a wrestler. He currently competes on “Raw” under the name of Dominik Mysterio. As you’d expect, wrestling fans around the world are thinking of Rey Mysterio and his family members who are mourning this unfortunate loss. “Rest in Peace to the patriarch of the most legendary luchador name in wrestling,” one person said in response to the news. Another person commented, “Prayers for the Mysterio family.” “Rest In Peace. Praying for the Mysterio family as they grieve,” a social media user said. “Rest well brother and prayers for the Mysterio family,” a fourth person wrote. Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, a Mexican wrestling company, released a statement on Rey Misterio Sr.’s death. “We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest,” the statement read. Misterio’s last appearance in the ring was at a Lucha Libre event in 2023. Our thoughts are with the Misterio family.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh gives Diontae Johnson the De’Vondre Campbell treatment
The Baltimore Ravens are having a great 2024 season. Baltimore is 9-5 heading into Week 16 and is in the thick of the AFC playoff race. The Ravens are one game back from the Steelers in a tight AFC North division race, with the loser likely becoming a wild card team. Just about the only disappointing part of the 2024 season for Baltimore is the drama surrounding Diontae Johnson. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh did not want to talk about Johnson during his Monday press conference. “What I foresee really, to be honest with you, and all I’m really thinking about right now, is Pittsburgh and getting our team ready for Pittsburgh,” Harbaugh said when asked if Johnson would practice with the team. “So, he won’t be here this week, and next week will take care of itself.” The Ravens traded for Johnson back in October after the Panthers had no more use for him. Unfortunately, he has been nothing but a disappointment. Johnson was recently suspended for one game for refusing to enter the team’s Week 13 game against the Eagles. Johnson is in a similar situation to 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell. Campbell was suspended for three games for refusing to enter the game against the Rams on TNF. “I’m really interested in the Pittsburgh Steelers, to be honest with you. I know you guys want to hear the story,” Harbaugh continued. “There’s a lot of moving parts, [and] there are reasons for doing things that are front office-type reasons. Do I want to sit here and get into all of the different calculations that [executive vice president and general manager] Eric [DeCosta] makes? I really don’t. I want to think about Pittsburgh and our team getting ready for Pittsburgh and the guys who are going to be here playing against Pittsburgh. That’s my focus – 100 percent.” Baltimore will be fine without Diontae Johnson. Next up for the Ravens is a Week 16 matchup against the Steelers.

Aaron Rodgers on pace to break 57-year-old Jets franchise record
The New York Jets have struggled to find wins. Their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, on the other hand, has been playing rather well if his stats are viewed in a vacuum. He’s thrown for 3,255 yards, 23 touchdowns and just eight interceptions this season. Those 23 passing scores equal the same total former starting quarterback Zach Wilson threw in his three seasons combined under center for the team. If Rodgers throws for 753 yards over his final three games (roughly 250 yards per game), then he would break Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath’s 1967 franchise record for most passing yards in a single season (4,007). That’s a 57-year-old record no other Jets quarterback has touched. Former passer Ryan Fitzpatrick came the closest in 2015 with 3,905 yards. However, if you glance at their record (4-10), the Jets don’t look like a team with a quarterback who has had a late-career boom. Rodgers missed all but four snaps in 2023 due to a ruptured Achilles, but in 2024, team drama has dominated headlines instead of his play. Head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were fired earlier in the season, signaling that on-field dysfunction may be a symptom of internal strife. Facing the red-hot Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the division-leading Buffalo Bills (Dec. 29) and the Miami Dolphins (Jan. 5) to conclude the season isn’t an ideal slate for the team or Rodgers’ pursuit of Namath’s record. But Rodgers has accomplished tougher feats in the past, and with weapons like receivers Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson, anything is possible.
