Nico O’Reilly and Rayan Cherki celebrate Manchester City’s third goal in the win over Bournemouth

Manchester City moved up to second in the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland put City ahead early on but Bournemouth levelled when Tyler Adams turned home after Gianluigi Donnarumma couldn’t get any purchase on a clearing punch. The City keeper wanted a foul against David Brooks but VAR didn’t intervene.

Haaland and City found a response with the frontman again racing clear of the visitors defence and finishing to put the Blues back in front.

Haaland missed a chance to net his first hat trick of the season before the break while Nico O’Reilly was also denied when clean through.

But the City left back wasn’t denied on the hour mark when he drove into space and fired a shot into the far corner.

That killed the contest and earned City a precious three points that lifted them into second spot in the table, six points behind leaders Arsenal.

Pep on Bournemouth equaliser

The goal we conceded and you see the replay is unbelievable it was not a fault.

There are things that are sometimes difficult to understand and why is that not disallowed.

That was the moment but we were stable enough to have the momentum to score a second.

City dealt major injury blow

Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City will wait on Mateo Kovacic ‘for the last part of the season’ with the midfielder sidelined again with an ankle injury.

Kovacic is yet to start for City this season after undergoing Achilles surgery in the summer. He missed the entire pre-season including the Club World Cup, and was sidelined until September when he returned to the matchday squad against Burnley.

Guardiola on the title race

Pep Guardiola is happy with where his team are at after their win over Bournemouth, even if he is left waiting for Arsenal to concede a goal.

One week ago we were not, in Villa Park. I said from the beginning I like the team. I give credit to the opponents, they play minute one to 95 in the same rhythm. If you are not clever, we lost easy or sloppy balls and nobody can stop them in transitions. Semenyo and Brooks are otp class players, but we managed to bring them to a palace where they feel uncomfortable and the quality of the players we have between the lines, especially Erling, made the difference. Hopefully Arsenal can concede one goal one day. I had the feeling since the World Cup that we were in that moment. It’s just ten games, still 28 to play, many things are going to happen and feel that the team is getting better and better.

Next five fixtures

City climbed to second in the Premier League table following a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday evening.

The result moves City to within six points of league leaders Arsenal, while Liverpool sit one point behind in third. Bournemouth, meanwhile, drop to fourth.

Here’s a look at the next five Premier League fixtures for City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

19:10Alex James

Pep verdict

Bournemouth are one of the most demanding teams that we have faced. We found our rhythm and today we were better in many aspects.

Bournemouth played an outstanding game. Last season they destroyed us. You have to match their duels otherwise…look in the second half. We lost three or four balls and they kill you.

They are incredible. It is no surprise for me what they did last season. They lost three of their four defenders and they are still there.

19:04Alex James

More from Haaland

We all know Rayan’s qualities, it was about trying to get the best out of everyone and he had two amazing assists for me today.

Bournemouth reaction

To get something from these kind of games you need something special.

In the first half we pressed like we always do. They find our backs with the first two goals very well. You have to accept sometimes when you play like this they punish us. I am pleased with the performance overall.

Haaland is that good. He is in great form and with the spaces it is very difficult to defend. We didn’t want to change the way we were playing. He punished us two times. The timing was not there from our centre-backs.

We started quite well. We fight and got to 1-1 but then a lovely moment from them. Probably second half we were probably controlling more of the game. We were playing well and had two chances.

Now we have another difficult game up next [at Aston Villa next Sunday]. The Premier League is very demanding and everything is super tight.

Haaland reaction

Important win. It is good to bounce back after losing a bad away game. It was nice.

I tried to contribute for the team by doing my job. It is good to win. Now two more important games to come, so keep focusing.

I didn’t score last game. I try to help the team to win. That is my goal and even by scoring or helping in winning duels it doesn’t matter. I want to help the team become better, that is my job.

Erling Haaland celebrates opening the scoring for City against Bournemouth

18:44Key Event

Match analysis

Erling Haaland had a big say in Manchester City’s win over Bournemouth. The Norwegian netted twice to stretch his lead to seven in the race for the Golden Boot and reduce Arsenal’s lead to six at the top of the Premier League.

It may seem inevitable for a raw milk-swigging colossus of a striker who has ripped up goalscoring records for fun since he arrived at the Etihad, but it is remarkable how so much continues to be about Haaland.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the Treble just months after one of the leading pundits claimed that the striker had joined the wrong team, and after years of commentators trying to suggest Haaland has made City less effective this season the claims are that they are now playing too much to his strengths.

Manchester City moved up to second in the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth. Pep Guardiola’s side put their defeat to Aston Villa last week behind them to leapfrog the Cherries and remind the rest of the league that Arsenal’s coronation is not inevitable.

Erling Haaland was central to their victory again, scoring his 16th and 17th goals of the season after enjoying a rest in midweek. He twice gave City the lead, with Tyler Adams having cancelled out his first effort after a goalkeeping error from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City’s keeper made a few important saves in the second half before Nico O’Reilly made the game safe with a sweet strike from inside the box.

Here are the player ratings from the Manchester Evening News.

90′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – Added time

We are into five minutes of it and City are playing keep ball in the Bournemouth half.

This has been a largely professional performance from City against a side who had only lost once in the league before today.

The Blues will be second tonight and looking ahead to a big few days before the international break with Dortmund on Wednesday and Liverpool to come next weekend

18:21Alex James

City are introducing Ait-Nouri and Rodri for the final few moments.

Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden the men to make way

18:20Alex James

87′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – Chance City

Savinho does well to get down the right side and evade a challenge before pulling the ball back from the byline to Marmoush but he can’t squeeze a shot on target and it’s into the side netting

18:18Alex James

85′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – Visitors pressing

Bournemouth are asking questions of the City defence and enjoying a bit of possession.

One goal now would set up a nervy finale but the home side are standing firm and look a danger themselves on the counter.

18:15Alex James

81′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – Haaland comes off

There won’t be a hat-trick for Haaland today as he’s replaced by Omar Marmoush.

Haaland netted twice in the first half and has once again played a huge role in what looks like a City victory.

Marmoush, who found the net for the first time this season with a goal at Swansea in midweek, has 10 minutes to showcase his ability through the middle.

64′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – City in control

Bournemouth have turned to the bench but that third goal has knocked the stuffing out of them somewhat.

City are enjoying plenty of the ball and the game is almost exclusively being played inside the Bournemouth half.

Even a few refereeing decisions have gone City’s way in the last few minutes!

17:53Alex James

59′ CITY 3 BOU 1 – Excellent finish

O’Reilly was in plenty of space there when he moved onto Foden’s pass but the slight delay in shooting meant more space opened up in the box and his finish was low and hard beyond Petrovic, who could have perhaps done better.

That is a significant goal for City, a two-goal cushion with 30 minutes to play.

GOALLLLLLLLL City

Nico O’Reilly. Lovely stuff

17:46Alex James

53′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Chance Bournemouth

The visitors fashion a real opportunity but Kroupi is denied by a strong hand from Donnarumma, the Cherries had a man over as well but you can’t blame Kroupi for trying his luck there.

Danger signs for City

17:44Alex James

50′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Chance Bournemouth

Bournemouth threaten and get a shot away but it is into the side netting.

Bit of a low key start to the half so far, Haaland had a header over the top at the other end and City have to just be careful and make sure they don’t allow the visitors a way back into this

17:40Simon Bajkowski

48′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Taylor jeered again

The first half ended with Anthony Taylor being booed off by City fans and it has taken less than a minute for the jeers to get going again as Bournemouth get a free-kick 30 yards away from City’s goal.

The ref has got the worst reception any official has got at the Etihad for ages, but they need to channel that energy into pushing the team on.

17:38Simon Bajkowski

46′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Blues aiming to maintain momentum

You feel like City need a strong start to the second half. They’ve played some really good stuff here but they are only 2-1 up and that can very quickly be undone. One thing Haaland has been missing this season has been a hat-trick – he has two goals in his last four at the Etihad but is yet to score three this season.

Can he change that in the second half and help City over the line in this one?

17:37Alex James

Away we go

City get the second half started. Big 45 minutes for the Blues here

17:36Alex James

Players back out

Bournemouth are first to emerge from the tunnel for the second half.

City now follow, doesn’t look as though either side have made any changes at the break

17:26Alex James

Half time analysis

City will be happy enough with that performance and they could easily be further ahead.

Bournemouth’s goal came from a Donnarumma error and they haven’t overly-worked the home defence.

City on the other hand have seen Haaland and O’Reilly spurn decent chances while Cherki – who is a lovely footballer to watch – went close with that free kick

You feel a third goal will be needed for City but it is definitely there for them if they can maintain their intensity and creativity,

Bournemouth continue to play with a high line and City are capable of exploiting that further after the break

45+5′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Chance City

The half ends with Cherki forcing a good save from Petrovic from a free kick and then Taylor further endears himself to the home fans by blowing for the interval before the corner can be taken.

He’s booed off but City are ahead at the break.

17:17Alex James

46′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Foden booked

Cynical pull of the shirt from Foden and it earns him a needless booking

City fans respond with an ‘Anthony Taylor it’s all about you’ chant

He’s not on the home crowd’s Christmas card list

17:15Alex James

44′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Visitors just having a spell

Bournemouth are finishing the half with a bit of intent here.

City are defending well enough though and there hasn’t been a save for Donnarumma to make in the match of any note.

It will be a decent half if the Blues can get through this five added minutes and into the interval with their lead intact

17:11Alex James

40′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Break in play

Semenyo is down getting treatment after being caught by Dias when clearing the ball.

He is not moving too comfortably with a knock to his back. He’s hobbling off and is going to play on for now it looks like

17:09Simon Bajkowski

39′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – All City

City are storming Bournemouth at the minute, with every attack looking like it will lead to another goal.

And it perhaps needs to, given they are only 2-1 up. They deserve more based on the strength of their play but they have also been leaky enough at the back that while they only lead by one goal there is always the risk that they will be pulled back to square one.

17:07Alex James

36′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Big chance City

Bournemouth are not learning their lessons.

Doku wriggles his way past a couple of challenges in the middle and feeds Haaland who is in again down the left hand channel but this time he tries to dink a finish over Petrovic and the keeper is equal to it

17:06Alex James

34′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – Big chance

Nico O’Reilly almost makes it three.

Doku sends a lovely pass through the defence and O’Reilly is in. He tries to emulate Haaland and round the keeper but can’t quite find the finish and it’s bundled away by the visitors.

The perceived injustice felt by City over that Bournemouth equaliser has certainly fueled them.

17:04Alex James

33′ CITY 2 BOU 1 – More Haaland composure

He again had plenty to do but just did it so well. Lovely pass through from Cherki as well and Haaland profited from the Bournemouth left back being a couple of yards deeper than he should have been

17:02Key Event

GOALLLL Haaland

17:01Simon Bajkowski

30′ CITY 1 BOU 1 – City anger

Everyone is in a bit of shock that Donnarumma managed to produce that bad of a howler – his arm was tugged before the ball came in but that doesn’t excuse how weak the keeper was after that.

City were outraged by the decision and Donnarumma was booked for his protests, and Silva is still fuming about it. They need to get back to focusing on the Bournemouth penalty area though

17:00Alex James

29′ CITY 1 BOU 1 – No penalty

VAR agrees with the referee, City’s players and fans certainly feeling frustrated with the match official at the moment.

16:59Alex James

28′ CITY 1 BOU 1 – Penalty appeal

City want a spot kick against Jiminez for hand ball in the box. Referee Taylor unmoved but VAR are checking

16:58Alex James

26′ CITY 1 BOU 1 – Goal stands

There was an arm on Donnarumma but the keeper needs to be doing better there, would have been soft to see that chalked off.

The Italian just didn’t get enough on his punch. He’s booked for leading the protests and suddenly we are level

The visitors are level. Donnarumma tries to palm away a corner and doesn’t get enough on it and Adams turns home from inside the box.

16:54Simon Bajkowski

23′ CITY 1 BOU 0 – Haaland in such good form

Haaland just looks great, doesn’t he. The little nudge on his head to keep the momentum of Cherki’s header on and the finish was excellent, but even after that getting the ball deeper in the pitch and nearly setting O’Reilly free.

City are in a good place in this game and they look ready to take the game to Bournemouth again. The visitors look a bit subdued as they try and live with this City side in decent flow.

16:50Alex James

20′ CITY 1 BOU 0 – Over reliance? Who cares

There’s a lot made about how Haaland scores for City and no-one else. But if he keeps finding the net with the regularity he is, that might not matter. It’s 12 in the Premier League already and City have an important lead
