Pep Guardiola after Manchester City beat Everton in the Premier League
Erling Haaland’s quickfire double inspired Manchester City to victory against Everton at the Etihad.
The striker scored twice inside five second half minutes, the first a bullet header and the second a composed finish, to extend City’s unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions.
The Blues had been making heavy weather of finding a way past an obdurate Everton who threatened in the first half through Beto and Iliman Ndiaye.
City had their moments too with Haaland hitting the bar and the striker broke the deadlock early in the second half and once the Norwegian made it two shortly after there was no way back for Everton.
Here’s how the game unfolded along with all the analysis and reaction.

Pep issues clear demand despite win
Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City need to end their reliance on Erling Haaland for goals if they want to have a successful season.
Haaland continued his amazing start to this campaign with two goals against Everton to make it eight unbeaten for the Blues in all competitions as they move up the Premier League table. His 11 league goals after just eight matches are five clear of anyone else in the division as he races into the lead for the Golden Boot.
However, his tally is also 10 more than any City player has managed in the league with Burnley’s Maximo Esteve the second-top scorer for the team after his two own goals at the Etihad.
Guardiola was happy for Haaland to steer City to another win but made it clear that his teammates have to start chipping in if they are to continue their run of results.

Everton reaction
David Moyes has had his say on the game
I was quite pleased with lots of the performance. Not pleased with the result. We’ve come here and put on a good show, up until the first goal certainly.
Created a couple of chances in the first half. I wanted to try and challenge the likes of City and Arsenal where we can. We’ve challenged them today but we’ve come up a bit short.
They’ve got a number nine who knows how to find the back of the net. One occasion where just as we were changing over from attacking to defensive phase we got caught up with a pass.
It was a terrific ball by Nico O’Reilly for Haaland to score but if you give that level opportunities you give them the chance to score.
A bit of a scruffy goal the second one. He scuffs it through James’ [Tarkowski] legs, they won’t be bothered about that but not a great finish from our point of view.
That puts us in danger at 2-0 but I was impressed with how well we defended after that because they had more chances.
You must not forget where Everton were in the last few years. Coming here we’re trying to challenge one of the best teams in football. For large periods we did a good job and we challenged them. We move on.
18:17Alex James
Pep pleased with City momentum
We have sustained the level. Minutes from Oscar [Bobb] and Bernardo [Silva] and Rayan [Cherki]. We need everyone back because it’s a lot of games.
Contribution is important and the players know that they have to be ready. We started a bit difficult with Tottenham and Brighton but since the last international break we have come back.
Winning helps us to win more and now we have to continue in Champions League.

Pep on Haaland’s goalscoring
Disappointed he did not score four or five. All jokes aside, really pleased but we can not rely on just him, we need other players. Wingers, attacking midfielders. They have to make a step up and score goals.
We play to provide Erling with quality and passing but other players have to step up.
The chances were clear and they have to score. At this level they have to demand themselves. Chances from Savinho and Jeremy [Doku] and Tijjani [Reijnders] – they have to score. They have to do it otherwise we can’t do what we want to do.
Erling lives for it. Our delivery of passes has been better and Erling is our key man right now.

Pep has his say
Typical first half after international break. We were not able to control the second balls, it wasn’t easy.
Everton and David Moyes are doing an incredible job. The quality is there and they have the long balls and experienced defenders.
When we broke it we started to play better.
17:45Key Event
Dias delivers his verdict
A lot of work, they were not easy at all. First half we were more troubled, we couldn’t really set up our game.
Completely different second half and three points.
In the first half we had a clear chance from Savinho, one from Phil Foden and one from Jeremy Doku.
We had chances, always happy when anyone scores and happy for Erling to score.
He’s a very important player for us, we want everyone to be involved and everyone to be scoring not just Erling. It’s important that he’s on his rhythm and makes a big difference for us when he is.
One game at a time. We’re good, improving, many coming back from injury which is good for us. Happy to see almost everyone available by now. We will keep on building and hopefully keep on winning.
17:33Alex James
Foden on his own performance
I think I am improving my relationship with Erling. I played a few good passes in behind for him today which he could have scored from.
Unfortuantely every time I pass to him he seems to miss.
We are dfinitely building that relationship. I’m finding that ball in behind and getting the ball into areas where he can score goals. Something we have been working on.
17:26Alex James
Foden on Haaland’s importance
Very important. We know he’s got that quality to time his runs to perfection and be in the right position.
If they mark him out of the game he is still capable of scoring and we know he only needs one chance to score.
He remained very patient, there wasn’t a lot of space for him today.
And as you can see he is always there for us at the right times, that is the sign of a world class striker.

Phil Foden verdict
Phil Foden has been speaking to broadcasters after that one.
Here’s what he had to say
It was difficult. In the first half we weren’t really at it. We weren’t playing forward as quickly as we could do.
We took too long on the ball and couldn’t find the space in between the lines. The manager spoke about it at half time and in the second half we were much more meaningful with the ball going forward, breaking lines and yeah we created a lot. Overall we can be happy with the performance.

Match analysis
Manchester City weren’t great at home to Burnley last month in the Premier League. They went in level in a game they were expected to win and Pep Guardiola wanted more.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Nico O’Reilly delighted his manager by showing real intent and bursting into the opposition box. It came to nothing, but it set the standard for his teammates.
City were even worse in the first half against Everton, needing words from both Guardiola and the injured Rodri in the tunnel before the second half began and O’Reilly again set the tone. That picked the crowd up and City went from there.
It wasn’t an immediate response from the team, but when they did rouse themselves it was no surprise that O’Reilly was at the heart of it.

City top of the table – for now
So City hit top spot ahead of Arsenal’s game with Fulham which will kick off shortly.
That will do very nicely indeed. It may well be that Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs all go back ahead of City over the next 24 hours or so but the Blues are going about their business very nicely at the moment.
It helps to have someone like Haaland mind!

Player ratings
Manchester City continued their excellent form with a 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League. Erling Haaland scored twice in the second half to put a stodgy start behind them.
City were seven unbeaten before the international break but Everton caused them a few problems in the first half, especially when Nathan Ake needlessly gave the ball away in his own half. However, City had the lion’s share of possession and their control was turned into a lead when Nico O’Reilly crossed for Haaland just before the hour mark.
A few minutes later, Savinho teed up Haaland for a second and City never looked like conceding after that.
Here are the player ratings from the Manchester Evening News.
16:57Key Event
FT: City 2 Everton 0
That’s it. Eight unbeaten now for City and 23 goals in 13 games for Haaland, who looked unstoppable until injury time when he was denied his hat-trick three times.
O’Reilly and Gonzalez very good as well and another positive day for City, depite a stodgy first half performance.
16:54Tyrone Marshall
96′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Incredible
And again! For the third time in added time Haaland is in behind the Everton defence and again Pickford denies him his hat-trick.
16:53Tyrone Marshall
95′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – And again!
Haaland is in behind again. He takes the ball round Pickford but runs wide and then his attempted cross/shot drifts over the bar. He is desperate for that hat-trick.
16:51Tyrone Marshall
92′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Haaland so close
Foden with a lovely ball in behind for Haaland, but his shot is saved by Pickford and then his follow-up attempt is blocked. Cherki is then on the scene and his shot is deflected behind for a corner.
You woiuld have put your house on Haaland getting his hat-trick then.
16:49Tyrone Marshall
91′ – CITY 2 EVE 0 – Time for more drama
There will be seven minutes added one, which is a bit of a surprise. Not sure where that has come from.
16:47Tyrone Marshall
89′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Praise for Gonzalez
Out of those changes it was probably Gonzalez who got the biggest hand from the Etihad and he has been very good today.
We see Rodri in the tunnel at half-time, but it’s fair to say the 23-year-old is easing the need to play the Ballon d’Or winner every week and he looks better in this side for every start.
16:44Alex James
85′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – City changes
And here come the changes.
Guardiola introduces Kovacic, Lewis and Cherki for the closing stages.
Off come O’Reilly, Gonzalez and Savinho
16:39Alex James
79′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Haaland hat trick?
You would think there is an opportunity to rest the scoring sensation ahead of the Champions League in midweek and perhaps offer the fit again Omar Marmoush a few minutes?
But Haaland will be desperate to stay and try and complete a hat-trick.
City have still only used two subs so far this afternoon
16:34Alex James
75′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – City in complete control
The sting has been taken out of this one now, City are comfortable and Everton look beaten.
There are more goals in this for the home side you feel.
Everton have turned to their bench with Beto coming off and Barry coming on.
16:30Alex James
69′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Blues going top
City, as things stand, will be top of the table ahead of Arsenal’s game against Fulham which gets under way in about an hour.
Bournemouth have been pegged back at Crystal Palace, it’s 2-2 in the capital, and that is enough to see City climb to the summit
16:24Alex James
63′ CITY 2 EVE 0 – Haaland unstoppable
He’s on another level just now. Incredible scoring form from the striker and he’s taken this game away from Everton in a blink of an eye

16:22Key Event
GOALLLL Haaland again
Haaland scores again. Shock. City now two up and surely that is the points safe?
16:21Simon Bajkowski
62′ CITY 1 EVE 0 – Everton still a danger
That felt like a double substitution more out of frustration at the failure to score rather than to protect the immediate lead.
Savinho has switched to the left wing with Doku on for Bobb, but City still have to be careful here – Haaland had his head in his hands when Beto was allowed to steam through on goal.
16:19Alex James
60′ CITY 1 EVE 0 – Double change
City score and immediately make two changes.
Bernardo and Bobb are on for Doku and Reijnders
16:18Tyrone Marshall
59′ CITY 1 EVE 0 – He was never missing
Haaland has now scored City’s last six goals and he needed that one, given nobody else has looked like scoring.
Been a poor performance from City but with Haaland you have a cheat code and he was never missing that header.
16:17Key Event
GOALLLLL HAALAND
There it is. The breakthrough and who else? Haaland heads in O’Reilly’s cross. 13 goals this season already!
16:14Alex James
53′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Echoes of last season
This game was 0-0 last season. On that December day City were in the midst of a dreadful run of form and to some extent were grateful for a point. That would not be the case today, it would be viewed as two dropped if City can’t find a victory this afternoon
16:10Simon Bajkowski
52′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Subs out warming up
Guardiola has sent four subs to warm up and the only surprise after the opening five minutes of the second half is that there aren’t more.
Kovacic, Cherki, Silva, and Bobb are all on the touchline hoping to get the nod to come on , and at the minute not many on the pitch could complain if their number was up
16:09Alex James
50′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Blues will want more
The home crowd are very quiet this afternoon, and to be fair there has been little on the pitch to get them off their seats.
It’s very much a game after the international break feel
16:06Alex James
46′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Back under way
No changes from either side as we get going again at the Etihad.
Plenty of options from an attacking perspective among the City subs with Cherki, Bobb and the fit-again Marmoush.
16:04Alex James
Second half incoming
Right, can we see a bit more entertainment and more importantly, a win for City over the next 45 minutes? We are about to find out
15:54Alex James
More needed from City
Well it wasn’t vintage stuff, City had the lion’s share of the chances but Everton perhaps had the best two.
Nil nil is probably a fair reflection of the half but Guardiola will want more from his side, a bit more urgency and zip required.
15:48Key Event
Half-time ratings
All square at the break, let’s hope for better after the interval but here’s the half-time ratings
Donnarumma 7
Nunes 7
Dias 6
Ake 5
O’Reilly 6
Gonzalez 7
Reijnders 6
Foden 6
Savinho 6
Doku 6
Haaland 6
15:44Alex James
43′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Chance City
City counter swiftly and Doku gets a shot away but it is saved by Pickford.
Blues win a corner and after a bit of head tennis, Everton win a foul and a chance to clear their lines
15:42Alex James
40′ EVE 0 CITY 1 – Chance Everton
Excellent save from Donnarumma to tip away an Ndiaye effort.
Ndiaye has been a livewire for the home side, five years ago he was on loan not too far down the road from the Etihad at Hyde United!
15:37Simon Bajkowski
35′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Poor from both sides
Sometimes you watch a game and wonder how it is half-time already.
It already feels like we have been watching this game for half a week and we are only just past 30 minutes.
It has been poor from both teams and some quality is badly needed if this game is to liven up and speed up
15:34Tyrone Marshall
33′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – A tough watch so far
Let’s be honest, this is really boring.
Hard to criticise Everton for playing this way and they are in the game as a result, but it is a tough watch.
Every moment in the game seems to be a battle for the ball. There is no real control or fluidity and very little goalmouth action. City yet to serve up Haaland with anything resembling a chance.
15:30Alex James
29′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – City probing
It’s not vintage stuff from the home side but they are asserting come control on the game now and are keeping the ball much better.
The game hasn’t quite sparked into life yet though
15:26Alex James
23′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – City hit the bar
Chance for City there from Foden’s corner and it comes off Haaland and hits the bar. Didn’t look the cleanest contact but it’s the closest we’ve come to a goal so far
15:23Tyrone Marshall
22′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Haaland quiet so far
Haaland’s involvement so far has been to head clear in his own six-year box and offering himself up for a couple of wall passes as City try and build through Everton’s low block.
It’s not been a feast of entertainment. Their brightest moments are coming via Savinho, who has the beating of Mykolenko but not the conviction to do anything after that.
15:20Simon Bajkowski
19′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Gonzalez impressing
City haven’t really tested Jordan Pickford but they are getting closer to that point.
Nico Gonzalez has started excellently and City are beginning to dominate in midfield with Foden and Reijnders finding themselves on the ball.
They will need better finishing than Savinho has offered up so far but the Blues are beginning to turn the screw.

15:18Alex James
16′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Blues take aim
This time it is Nunes with the effort from distance as space opens up in front of him. It was off target but it is a sign of the space that City can perhaps exploit as Everton drop off
15:15Alex James
14′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Chance Everton
Beto cannot connect as he stretches to try and convert, was very close to turning that in after City gave it away cheaply through Ake.
Beto
slams his fist in annoyance.
15:14Simon Bajkowski
13′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – officials sending statement
The officials have set a high bar for what constitutes a foul early on, but they have applied it to both sides.
Savinho wasn’t happy when he thought he was getting some rough treatment down the right wing and then Alcaraz complained of being blocked by Nunes, but their protests have been waved away by Tony Harrington and his team.
15:12Alex James
11′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – First shot from City
And it’s Nico O’Reilly, roaming forward and getting an effort away but it is off target.
City beginning to find their way into the contest now after some early Everton pressure and territory
15:11Alex James
10′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – First flashes from Blues
Phil Foden wins a corner for City as the hosts threaten for the first time, but the set piece is cleared away without any threat on the Everton goal.
15:09Tyrone Marshall
9′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – It’s not pretty
An opening 10 minutes that has reinforced the Premier League’s claim to be the league of the tactical mess this season.
Second balls, duels, long throws, players on the floor, physios on the pitch. Scrappy is an understatement for this start.
15:08Simon Bajkowski
7′ CITY 0 EVE 0 – Slow start from City
A scrappy and sloppy start from City, with a number of misplaced passes already.
Everton are hardly great themselv
