The transfer window has closed and the matches are back — at least today, until the September international break begins! And it’s a big one, with Liverpool traveling to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.

The teams met three times last season with Liverpool having 87 attempts on goal in all. Manchester United somehow avoided defeat, however, and drew twice in the Premier League and won in the FA Cup. This time, the Reds will need to be a lot more clinical.

Arne Slot has been to Old Trafford before, losing 4-0 in the Europa League with Feyenoord, but this is his first visit with Liverpool. He is familiar with Erik ten Hag, too, having faced the Manchester United manager — and several of his players — when they were in the Eredivisie. Ten Hag, of course, was the manager of Slot’s rival then too, in charge of Ajax.

Curtis Jones is the only injury concern for Liverpool heading into the game. After he missed training on Friday, it looks like he hasn’t won the race against time to be involved in this match. He has a minor muscle issue but is yet to play a minute this season.

And it remains to be seen whether or not Federico Chiesa might be involved. Slot suggested it was likelier that he wouldn’t on Friday morning but he did train with his teammates later the same day and it hasn’t been 100 per cent ruled out.

Man Utd vs Liverpool kick-off time explained

Manchester United vs Liverpool will kick off half an hour earlier than usual today, with the match starting at 4pm UK time (9am west coast and 11am east cost in the USA). It would normally be a 4.30pm kick-off in the later slot on Sunday.

Likely because of a police request, though, according to the Daily Mail, it has been moved back slightly. How much difference half an hour will make remains to be seen.

Alan Shearer and Paul Merson agree

Manchester United will hold Liverpool to a score draw at Old Trafford today according to both Alan Shearer and Paul Merson. They’re predicting goals in the big game of the day.

I can see both teams scoring, definitely, but Liverpool would be disappointed to concede more than once. If Alisson Becker can keep a clean sheet, you would fancy the attacking talent to be able to find a way past the Manchester United defense.

Liverpool predicted line-up vs Man Utd

Arne Slot hasn’t had to make many changes to his Liverpool team so far this season so I’m expecting much of the same again here, possibly with Federico Chiesa on the bench.

The likely Liverpool line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Jota, Diaz.

That would leave Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez as attacking substitutes and Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo to bolster the midfield area. I can’t really see it being anything else, to be honest.

Liverpool injury latest

There is only one player set to be missing today for Liverpool because of injury: Curtis Jones. The midfielder picked up a muscle issue ahead of the game with Brentford last weekend and hadn’t recovered by Friday, making him a major doubt.

With Liverpool having failed to sign a new midfielder in the transfer window, that absence does leave it looking a little light of numbers in the middle of the pitch. That has to be a concern only two and three games into the new campaign.

Man Utd vs Liverpool score prediction

Harry Redknapp is predicting a narrow 2-1 victory for Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday after being impressed by Arne Slot’s start to life at Anfield.

Liverpool has won its first two Premier League matches of the season, against Ipswich Town and Brentford, and is yet to concede a goal, winning both matches 2-0. United, meanwhile, scraped a late victory against Fulham on the opening day of the campaign before losing at Brighton last weekend.

That’s definitely a scoreline we can see happening: a tight game but one where Liverpool comes out on top. Read more about what Redknapp had to say here.
