‘Arsenal have the handbrake on’

Former Man City defender on Sky Sports
Arsenal have the quality to go for it now but I think the handbrake is on a little bit.
If they go for it then I think they will have a better chance of winning the league.

‘Disappointed with the result’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Regardless of the result I will say the same thing. I am extremely proud of the team and the players for the way we played and dominated this game against this Man City. From my side as a coach that requires compliments from my side as a coach.
“After that, very disappointed with the result. It is true that scoring at the end gives you a bit of emotion, a bit of a taste, but then I think the first thought for me was to win the game.”
“Everybody will analyse the game in a different way. I think we did a lot of very good things very, very well in order to get the game to that state. From obviously every coach has to do the best thing to win the game.”

‘So unfair to concede with what we were doing’
published at 19:25 BST
19:25 BST
FT: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: “I’m very proud of the team I must say. We dominated them and I’m very disappointed with the result.”
On the first half: “We started really well, dominant again, playing in their half and we didn’t allow them to breathe.
“But in one action, that is very chaotic, there’s a duel there, we lose it and they find themselves three versus two in space and they’re lethal there. They finished the action with quality.
“After that we had five shaky minutes and we had to reset mentally because it was so unfair to concede the goal with what we were doing. But after that we dominated again.”
“There are always things we can do better. They way we delivered the cross to the defensive organisation afterwards, we made it a bit easy for them. But the speed, execution, quality – you have to congratulate the opponent.”
On message to the team at half-time: “Let’s continue what we’re doing because the game is there for the taking. If we continue to do that and improve two things, especially, that we had to do a bit better to give ourselves better chances and more momentum, then we’ll score the goals. And we were very close to that.”
What two things? “That stays in the dressing room.”
On impact of the subs: “Very pleasing. The ones that didn’t play in Bilbao like Willy and Leo that they get the chance to play and deliver performances like that.
“Then Gabi [Martinelli] probably deserved to play. He didn’t but instead of moaning, he comes in with an unbelievable energy to help the team get a point. Ebs the same and every player is going to do that because we know how difficult and tough it is going to be – we need everybody at their best.”
How big a point could it be? “I don’t know but if you cannot win, at least don’t lose. We created an unbelievable moment to score a goal but the overall feeling, because I know how hard it is to do what we did against that coach and that team… I wanted more.”
On City’s tactics: “Every team tries to do their best to get a result. That’s it.”
On if he wishes picked a different starting XI: “It’s fine. We changed it, we made the players and the game that we wanted when it was required. Before a different game was required.”

‘Week was tough’
published at 19:24 BST

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC MOTD: “We were strong mentally. It’s difficult to play when our intentional high pressing is not working because they are good.
“Last season we lost 5-1 and today we drew. We can’t say we’re satisfied but we can’t say it’s not a fair result.
“We had chances on the transition but it’s not the way we like to play. I give credit to Arsenal. The mentally and resilience from our team.”
On a difficult run: “The week was tough. Manchester United, Napoli and then today. The champions of Serie A and the derby is always difficult. We just need to go step by step to try and get points.”

‘More like Mourinho or Allardyce then Guardiola’

I think it was a different type of City and the stats reflect that. You expect Man City to dominate the ball but Arsenal dominated the ball and just couldn’t do what they wanted in the final third.
That’s not Pep’s style of play. That’s Mourinho or Allardyce. And it almost worked.

‘We were all connected’

Manchester City
Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, speaking to Sky Sports: “We ended the game with a good feeling. We were close to getting three points but we have to look at the week we’ve had, the moment we’re in and look at the improvements we’ve made.
“We came and fought for every ball today. We were all connected – even in a game when we had less possession than usual.
On what positives they can take from game: “The fighting spirit and belief. From that, everything else comes natural. Those little details – that are not so little – make the difference.
Different Manchester City?: “Every game is different and every team is different. We have the way we play and everyone knows it so clearly but sometimes you do it different.
“Today we answered in a positive way.”

‘Body language, spirit and being together – unbelievable’

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
Manchester City
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Disappointed with the result, yes, but last season we equalised in the last moment at the Etihad and they equalise here. It’s football. It’s 97 or 98 minutes.
“We were incredibly strong. It has been a really tough week for us with tough opponents and then Thursday to Sunday and travel to London, it is demanding. And the opponent is really good, so the result is fair.”
On naming an unchanged side: “Because I wake up in the morning yesterday and said these guys are gonna play. I surprise myself sometimes. I’m getting old my friend.”
On if City were stronger today than v Brighton: “I want the team to do better and I am here to enjoy my team. Today I am so proud of how they played. There are games and opponents where you have to do the body language, the spirit and being all together, that is unbelievable.”
On Haaland’s goal: “When it is transition we like to do the transitions, we can use it. It is not the way we like to do but sometimes the opponent is good and you have to accept that.”
On how he feels the team is doing five games in: “Still trying to grow. Many new players, including an important position with the keeper. Many players are injured. This is a young, young team, the youngest team we have had and will be for the future. Step by step we see what happens. It is a long journey, so we take it game by game.”

I’m going to take a positive note and say that I am impressed of how we defended a 1-0 lead for that long. We couldn’t do that last season even if it was part of the plan. Arsenal have built a brilliant team. Hopefully we can continue to match them.

Arsenal equalise in the 93rd minute, and rather than pick up the ball and run to the half way line to start the game quickly again, they waste a good 2 minutes celebrating with the crowd. I just don’t believe they have that real winners mentality.

‘We dominated almost every aspect of the game’

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “At the very least [we deserved a point].
“I’m so proud of my players, the way we played, the way we dominated almost every aspect of the game. Very disappointed not to win the game.”
On City’s goal: “We had the situation, five against two, a lot of a scramble over the ball and in that moment, that split second, Halland runs on and they attacked the space in a great way – that’s the quality they have.
“We are in the top end of the pitch, cross the ball and a lot of things have to happen but that’s their quality.”
On chances for City: “One is a corner, another is a counter attack and the other is a giveaway. That’s it. To keep City to just that, chapeau to the boys.”
On Arsenal’s performance: “I think we played better than last year when we beat them. Much better.”
On Martinelli scoring off the bench: “Very happy, that is what they’re here for. Ebs [Eze] as well with the ball he plays to Gabi, the timing of the run and the quality of the finish is unbelievable.”
On subs making an impact: “They are all going to play. They will all have opportunity. We’re going to need them at that level. There is no question that that is something very necessary.”
On being five points behind Liverpool: “We cannot control that. They win every match. It’s going to be very difficult but if we play at this level, like we did against Manchester City, we will be fine.”

This one is on Arteta, Merino is not a 10, that much was already obvious, & neither he nor Trossard are athletic or fast enough to start a game of this intensity, Trossard is a super sub when space opens up – this is not hard.

If you see when Eze got the ball, for some reason they decide not to drop off.
But the timing of the run, the weight of the pass and then the finish was exquisite.

Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, speaking to BBC MOTD: “Unfortunately, we conceded a late equaliser – it was a tough game. We had some possibilities to lead 2-0 but conceding late makes us unhappy.
“If you are 1-0 up you want the three points but everyone knows playing here at Arsenal it’s difficult. We have to keep working.”
On providing the assist: “First I was looking for Doku but he would need to beat a player and Erling was free.”

‘We have to improve’
published at 19:02 BST
19:02 BST
FT: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: “We played tough games this week – Manchester United and in the Champions League – and today we played against a powerful team.
“Hats off to our team for the resilience. It’s so difficult when you’re not effective with high pressing, it’s always tough in the build-up.
“We made some transitions. I think the result is fair. In general Arsenal were better.”
Was the togetherness the most pleasing thing?: “Since the transfer window finished the togetherness has been top. It was so demanding today and Arsenal have everything – we defended the corners so well. We’ll take the point, we have to improve but it is what it is.
“We were incredibly tired. The game against Napoli was so emotional and after that recovery day we have four or five hours to travel to London. Arsenal fought in the last two Premier League title races and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League so it’s so difficult.
“We had a lot of fatigue with many players. We also have a lot of injuries.”
Going to five at the back, is that due to schedule?: “We don’t try to be like this but when the opponent is better we defend deeper and counter-attack, but that’s not our intention.
“I would prefer not to do it but you have to at this level. I take a point and in some games we have to adjust.”

For me, I can’t get away from the fact that Arsenal still don’t look like they are going to score a goal from open play.
That is a worry for me at Arsenal. It still looks like that.
