Manchester United chief Sir Dave Brailsford was asked about Kylian Mbappe potentially moving to Old Trafford amid Arsenal’s confirmed interest in the World Cup winner. The future of the Paris Saint-Germain forward has been a long-running transfer saga.

It was reported on Thursday that Mbappe, 25, had informed PSG of his intention to leave the club at the end of the season. The France captain is entering the final few months of his contract after refusing to trigger an extension in the summer, which briefly saw him left out of PSG’s squad. Since being reintegrated into the team, Mbappe has scored 31 goals in 30 games.

Real Madrid have consistently been tipped as Mbappe’s next destination, while Arsenal and Liverpool have been among the English clubs to be linked with a move for the forward. However, United have effectively ruled themselves out of the race for Mbappe’s signature.

The Premier League recently approved Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25 per cent stake in Man United which will allow the Ineos group to oversee football operations. Sir Dave Brailsford, the INEOS director of sport, was asked by two fans about United’s hopes of signing Mbappe and gave a short answer.

Faced with the question, Brailsford laughed before saying, “I think he’s got his heart set on going to Real Madrid.” His answer came on the same day that Mikel Arteta refused to rule Arsenal out of the running to sign Mbappe.

“Why not?,” Arteta said, when asked if Arsenal should be in the conversation to sign Mbappe. “If we want to be the best team, we are going to need the best talent and the best players, that is for sure.
