Nicolas Jackson to Manchester United leads to obvious next transfer Ruben Amorim may not want

Nicolas Jackson has been linked with Manchester United and yet the Reds may be best served looking for a new midfielder if the right striker is not avaliable this summer

Nicolas Jackson’s name being linked with Manchester United has caused large-scale derision and uproar among Reds fans.

United have not had a reliable goalscorer up front since Cristiano Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford ended in late 2022. Marcus Rashford enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career that same campaign, but he was mainly used as a left-sided forward under Erik ten Hag.

Now, Ten Hag’s successor, Ruben Amorim, has a major hole in his squad. The former Sporting boss was left with Rasmus Hojlund, who was supposed to fill it when he arrived almost two years ago.

And yet the Denmark international has looked totally devoid of confidence from almost the moment he walked through the door at M16 in August 2023. It’s not all his fault, and a player of his inexperience deserves some sympathy.

But United must be ruthless if Amorim is going to have the desired impact he badly wants on a squad that has let down a succession of managers.

It’s why links with Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson are so baffling. Yes, the Reds need to think somewhat in the short term with no European football on offer and no realistic chance of competing for the Premier League title to offer an elite No.9.

But with Profit and Sustanability Rules (PSR) to consider this summer – why would United waste their funds on a player who offers no discernible upgrade on what they already have? Jackson scored just three more goals (13) across all competitions than Hojlund and was playing in a better team than Amorim’s rabble.

Instead, United should perhaps consider strengthening their midfield if they cannot do better than Jackson this summer. The Reds were often overrun in central areas against Leeds on Saturday in Stockholm, a worrying sign of what could be to come in 2025/26.

It may not be what Amorim wants, and yet it would make little sense to sign a new striker who has all the hallmarks of being another expensive flop.

United only have to look at their rivals to see why waiting for the right No.9 could be a good idea. Arsenal have been pilloried for not signing a new striker, and yet they have still been in a position the Reds can only dream of in recent seasons.

And their patience now looks set to pay off with the signing of Sporting frontman Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede scored 54 goals in 52 appearances last campaign and could turn Arsenal from title challengers into title winners.

No one can say for sure that Gyokeres will be a success in north London. And yet the odds are that he will be the missing piece in their jigsaw.

United would be wise to follow that approach until the right opportunity presents itself in January or next summer.
