Ed Aarons has filed his match report from Selhurst Park, so that’s my cue to go out for a night on the tiles in North Yorkshire, where I’m on holiday with my mum. Thanks for your company and correspondence about the finer points of yellow cards.

Henderson denies Manchester United but Crystal Palace still without win

Updated at 19.49 BST

19.44 BST

And here’s Dean Henderson. “It was a game of two halves,” he says. True enough. “We were attacking the game to win the game, we had a game plan. They were really good in the first half. We changed a few things… the manager felt we were playing so cautious and had nothing to lose. We were better second half but there’s more to come.”

After making seven saves, Henderson is asked by Jamie Redknapp to name his favourite. He has to think a bit. “The header,” he says eventually, meaning the one that De Ligt sent into his feet. “It was so close.”

“Have a good evening.” says Henderson, who seems a genial character. He gave his shirt to a small boy in the crowd who had a sign up, asking for it.

We deserved to win, Says Onana

The game was a tale of two goalies. Dean Henderson was the player of the match and André Onana was United’s best performer in the second. A sif to confirm that, they send him out to give an interview. “I’m happy for the work, for the sacrifice of my team-mates,” he says. “We deserved to win.. Today we beat the crossbar twice… the ball didn’t want to go in the net.”

On expected goals, it was Palace 1-2 United. Only two?

19.33 BST

A good spot from our friends on the Manchester Evening News. “On the plus side,” they note, United have “back-to-back clean sheets away from home in the Premier League for the first time since last November.” It’s obviously a lot better than losing 4-0, but the game was there to be won, the chances were piling up, and United couldn’t grab one. Erik ten Hag’s decision to stop Marcus Rashford in his tracks was a bizarre one, and although Joshua Zirkzee played pretty well, the bottom line shows that the gamble didn’t pay off.

The upshot is … not much. Palace remain 16th, sandwiched between Leicester and Ipswich, still winless but with two draws in the bag against the old big six. United are 11th, between Brentford and Spurs, whom they meet next Sunday. That game now feels like a must-win for both sides.

19.28 BST

Palace will probably be happier with the point than United. They weathered the storm and grew into the game, whereas United faded after a first half in which they delivered everything but the goal.

Several United players have a word with Dean Henderson, the one that got away. He showed his class today, though André Onana did well too.

FULL TIME! Palace 0-0 Man United

The free kick is cleared easily enough … and that is that. As stalemates go, it was lively, with United winning the first 43 minutes and Palace edging the rest.

19.22 BST

90+5 min Rashford wins a free kick off Lacroix, who goes into the book.

90+4 min The player of the match is … Dean Henderson. You read it here first (25 min).

90+3 min Onana takes charge, palming the corner away to Garnacho, who boots the ball clear.

Updated at 19.28 BST

19.20 BST

90+2 min Schlupp almost has an assist! He goes to the byline and whips in a cross towards Sarr. Martinez sees the ball out, but Palace have a corner.

Updated at 19.20 BST

19.19 BST

90 min There will be four more minutes. Oliver Glasner may have settled for a point, as he sends on Jeffrey Schlupp for the excellent Eze – though Schlupp has a goal in him.

Updated at 19.19 BST

19.17 BST

89 min Højlund gets a couple more touches, but you can see the rust as he can’t quite find the final ball.

Updated at 19.18 BST

19.16 BST

88 min Højlund sneaks down the inside-left channel, but Guehi has him under control,

Updated at 19.16 BST

19.15 BST

87 min All the noise is coming from the home fans. United play it around at the back, harmslessly. De Ligt goes long to Rashford, but it’s too long and Henderson does the clearing-up.

Updated at 19.15 BST

19.13 BST

84 min Guehi releases Sarr down the right with a fine chip, but Palace can’t turn the opening into a chance.

Updated at 19.13 BST

19.11 BST

82 min Sarr threatens again and Ugarte decides to give him a shove. Palace free kick, on the right, headed clear. Ugarte has the chance to break and it’s Hughes’ turn to commit a clear foul. He goes into the book.

Updated at 19.11 BST

19.08 BST

79 min Hughes, mopping up round the back, hits a shot at Onana when a cross might have been the more obvious move. Palace, so toothless in the first 40 minutes, have had five of the past six shots. If there is going to be a winner, the ebb and flow of the game suggests it will come from Sarr or Eze rather than United’s forwards, who have gone rather quiet.

Updated at 19.08 BST

19.06 BST

78 min Rashford goes long, looking for Højlund, finding only Henderson.

Updated at 19.06 BST

19.04 BST

76 min United subs: Eriksen gives way to Manuel Ugarte, Amad to Rasmus Højlund, who makes his first appearance of the season. So Garnacho will go to the right and Rashford to the left.

Updated at 19.04 BST

19.03 BST

75 min Mitchell whips the ball in from the left. De Ligt gets in the way and is relieved to find his deflection rolling straight to Onana.

74 min United corner: Eriksen chips it straight to Henderson.

19.01 BST

72 min Big chance for Palace! Eze to Sarr on the right. Sarr beats his man and cuts the ball back, knowing that is United’s Achilles heel… but Eze’s low shot goes just wide.

18.59 BST

71 min As things stand, Palace are 16th with three points and United are 11th with seven. Both teams badly need a win.

Updated at 18.59 BST

18.57 BST

67 min For the past few minutes Kobbie Mainoo has been showing why he made England’s first XI in the summer. Some lovely little flicks lead to a United free kick. Eriksen curls it in and De Ligt thinks there’s a Palace handball in the moshpit, but the check is now complete and the stalemate goes on.

Updated at 18.56 BST

18.54 BST

66 min Sub for Palace: Nketiah off, Will Hughes on to bolster the midfield.

Saves! By Onana

62 min Onana gets down low to make a fine save from Eddie Nketiah, then somehow gets up again to thwart Ismaila Sarr as he bears down on to gobble up the rebound. That was almost Raya-like.

Updated at 19.04 BST

18.52 BST

64 min Martinez goes into the book for a stamp on the edge of the Palace area. Not even Martin Lancon (18:29) will defend that one.

Updated at 18.52 BST

18.51 BST

62 min Rashford plays his part in a crisp move with Mainoo and Fernandes. The ball falls to Garnacho, whose shot draws yet another save from Henderson.

Heeeere’s Rashford

62 min Zirkzee off, Rashford on, so he’ll be the No 9 for now.

Updated at 18.55 BST

18.48 BST

60 min Better from Palace, who string together some passes. A low cross heads for Sarr, who goes down inside the box under pressure from De Ligt. You can guess what the crowd think about this, but the ref doesn’t agree.

Updated at 18.48 BST

18.46 BST

59 min Marcus Rashford is getting his kit on.

Updated at 18.46 BST

18.46 BST

58 min Eriksen starts a flowing move and should finish it too, but he can’t quite get a shot away.

Updated at 18.46 BST

18.45 BST

56 min Garnacho, after a quiet spell, races onto a long through ball, but his first touch is more of a back pass to Henderson.

Updated at 18.44 BST

18.43 BST

54 min At half-time Phil Jones pointed out that Diogo Dalot was tucking in and playing as a No 6. That seems to be the key to making the Eriksen-Mainoo pivot work: Dalot’s muscular presence frees Mainoo to play his neat little passes and Eriksen to concentrate on being creative. But it still hasn’t brought a goal.

Updated at 18.43 BST

18.41 BST

52 min Big chance for United! Fernandes exchanges passes with Zirkzee and finds himself clean through near the penalty spot, but off balance. He hits the ball with the outside of his right boot and can’t quite bend it inside the left-hand post.

Updated at 18.41 BST

18.39 BST

51 min United’s umpteenth corner yields only a mishit from the edge of the box by Fernandes.

Updated at 18.39 BST

18.39 BST

49 min Chance for United! It’s Amad again, cutting in from the right and curling a shot over Henderson, who gets a hand to it as it’s dipping.

Updated at 18.39 BST

18.37 BST

48 min There’s a melée and a handball by Lerma, I think, which brings a United free kick. When they break, Eriksen very nearly plays a great through ball to Amad.

Updated at 18.37 BST

18.35 BST

46 min Palace carry on where they left off just before the break. Eze wiggles past three United players and wins a corner.

Updated at 18.48 BST

18.33 BST

Subs for Palace! Ismaila Sarr and Jefferson Lerma, replacing Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta. So presumably Eddie Nketiah will move into the middle.

Updated at 18.33 BST

18.31 BST

Palace are showing the fans their new mascot. She’s an actual eagle, only four months old, called Phoenix.

Updated at 18.31 BST

18.30 BST

And here’s Geoff Ashworth. “If Matthijs came from Friesland and played for Galatasaray, he would be the Fries Turkish De Ligt.”

Updated at 18.30 BST

18.29 BST

“Garnacho,” says Martin Lancon. “Was that really a yellow? In Crystal Palace half, not dangerous, not a build-up of offences?” It’s a fair point.

Updated at 18.29 BST

18.28 BST

Erik ten Hag has a simple decision to make: stick or twist. On past form, he’ll stick for at least 15 minutes, because Garnacho and Zirkzee have been pretty good. But Rashford must be itching to get out there.

Updated at 18.28 BST

18.22 BST

HALF-TIME! Palace 0-0 Man United

After only a minute of added time, the whistle goes. For the past two minutes, Palace have been as dangerous as we expected. And although United have played well, they have sweet FA to show for it. The best player has been Dean Henderson, the best attacker Alejandro Garnacho

Updated at 18.22 BST

18.17 BST

45 min You wait 44 minutes for a Palace shot, then … Mateta has a go from distance, but Martinez has no trouble blocking it.

Updated at 18.17 BST

18.15 BST

Palace have a shot!

44 min Nketiah does well, motoring sideways, holding off Mainoo, and slipping a through ball to Mitchell. His cutback finds Eze, whose crisp low shot draws a first save from Onana.

Updated at 18.16 BST

18.13 BST

42 min Save! Henderson tips the ball round the post as Zirkzee gets a flick on a low cross from Fernandes.

Updated at 18.13 BST

18.12 BST

41 min Half-chance for Mainoo, in that zone he loves, whence he scored at Wolves. He strikes the ball well but it hits the head of Eriksen, who responds with a wry smile.

Updated at 18.12 BST

18.11 BST

40 min A lovely flowing move from United, a series of diagonals from Eriksen at left-half to Amad on the right wing. His backheel releases Fernandes, whose chipped cross floats too close to Henderson.

Updated at 18.11 BST

18.09 BST

38 min Wharton takes the corner short, gets the ball back but can’t put his cross past Amad, who takes a blow in a painful place.

Updated at 18.09 BST

18.08 BST

38 min Better from Palace, who whip in a free kick and win a corner off the head of Zirkzee.

Updated at 18.08 BST

18.07 BST

36 min Garnacho loses the ball on the edge of the area, sprints back to retrieve it, commits a foul and goes into the book.
