Fernandes made it 2-1
Fernandes made it 2-1
Manchester United fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.
Trailing 2-0 with just under 20 minutes to go, United staged a brilliant comeback via terrific goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte. The former bent in a brilliant free-kick before his midfield compatriot rifled in a superb volley.
Everton had been in cruise control for long periods of the game and led 2-0 at half-time after goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure. United were second best for long periods and looked set to be heading for a third straight Premier League defeat.
The Toffees thought they were going to get the opportunity to secure all three points deep into added time when Ashley Young was sent tumbling inside the box under a challenge from Matthijs de Ligt. However, despite a VAR check and an on-field review, referee Andy Madley overturned his initial decision, denying the home side a penalty.

Fernandes reveals Amorim’s half-time message
Ruben Amorim urged his players to ‘stick to the plan’ after they found themselves 2-0 down at half-time at Goodison Park this afternoon, according to Bruno Fernandes.
United recovered from 2-0 in the second half via goals from Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
Fernandes told TNT Sports:
“Sticking to the plan. The manager was very upset with us. We had to try and stick to the plan and to try and make it work. Even if things are not going well, we have to stick to what our ideas are, and that is what we did in the second half; we had much more freedom, much more movement. We were 2-0 down and had nothing to lose, and we got more into the game.”

REPORT: What Fernandes did for United vs Everton sets him apart from teammates
“Going down, going down, going down,” crowed the Evertonians. United won’t and eventually demonstrated why.
Even by United’s own penchant for comebacks, this was one of their most improbable. They oscillated from farcical to phenomenal, earning a result that will have little significance to the table. Just ten points to the magic 40 mark now.
The United players were safe to approach the away end at full-time. They weren’t after 70 minutes. The final Goodison Park roar that greeted these teams had deterred this meek United side whose mentality was in pieces.

PLAYER RATINGS: Fernandes impresses as United stage unlikely comeback
United fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park this lunchtime.
Here is a flavour of how chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst rated Uniteds players out of ten…
Andre Onana
Had barely any protection in front of him amid the omnishambles and was badly let down by Harry Maguire for the second goal. Made a key save at 2-0. 6
Matthijs de Ligt
Had barely any protection in front of him amid the omnishambles and was badly let down by Harry Maguire for the second goal. Made a key save at 2-0. 6
Harry Maguire
Did not see Doucoure coming as he got the jump on him for the second goal. A mistake reminiscent of his first season under Ten Hag. 4

60′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – An hour gone
We have had an hour on the clock at Goodison Park and Everton still lead 2-0.
United have threatened to try and hit Everton on the break since half-time but the Toffees have been so good out of possession. They look very, very well-drilled under Moyes.
13:50George Smith
55′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – Everton press relentlessly
Everton’s pressing game has been excellent this afternoon. United threaten to hit the Toffees on the break from an Everton corner, but Everton got bodies back so quickly that all of the space United wanted to utilise was blocked.
Moyes’ side have been excellent without the ball today.

United have forgotten how to score a first half goal
Following another goalless first half from United, they have now gone seven games without a first half goal since Bruno Fernandes’ penalty against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 19.
When you dive a little deeper into the stats, you discover that United have now gone a whopping 17 games without scoring from open play in the first half. That is absolutely shocking.

13:22Key Event
HALF-TIME: EVE 2-0 MUN – Everton in charge
The half-time whistle goes here at Goodison Park and United have it all to do.
Goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure have given Everton a commanding lead at the interval.
United have barely laid a glove on their hosts.
13:19George Smith
45+3′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – O’Brien cautioned
O’Brien goes into the book for a foul on Dorgu on the edge of the penalty area on the left side.
13:16George Smith
45′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – Added time
The fourth official has indicated there will be a minimum of six additional minutes at the end of this first half.
13:11George Smith
40′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – United survive
Everton have got their tails up now. A lovely flick from Lindstrom sends Garner clear, he plays a pass into Beto’s feet and he failed to hit a shot first time when a chance arose.
United are living dangerously.
13:09George Smith
39′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – United have nothing up front
United are starved of creativity inside the final third. Hojlund has had a platry five touches of the ball in 39 minutes, but he has been so isolated up front.
Dorgu has been their biggest threat from left wing-back.
13:07Samuel Luckhurst
37′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – United may need to change things soon
Onana is trying to gee up teammates. The gloves have literally come off for Casemiro. It has not been remotely cold.
Eriksen and Garnacho are warming up and they will be needed sooner rather than later.
13:06Steven Railston
36′ EVE 2-0 MUN – United can’t match Everton’s intensity
That just says it all about United. Everton scored that goal because they showed more desire to get there. Doucoure was alert and Maguire was napping. Shocking defending and United have an impossible mountain to climb here. We knew this game would be tough, but this result could be shocking. They must show some character and fight to prevent that.
13:06Samuel Luckhurst
35′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – Maguire will hang his head in shame
Maguire will hang his head in shame at that. He has not got a clue that Doucoure is there. That’s the Maguire of Ten Hag’s first season and the Solskjaer-Rangnick season.
United fans have gone quiet now. This could be as bad as the Easter Sunday massacre in 2019 or in 2014. The latter was Moyes’s last game in charge of United.
13:04Key Event
33′ – EVE 2-0 MUN – GOAL EVERTON! 2-0 (Doucoure)
It goes from bad to worse for United as Everton double their lead.
Beto picks out Harrison inside the box. He shoots, Onana parries it into the air and Doucoure heads in the rebound.
Everton 2-0 up.
12:59George Smith
29′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – Better from United
Good work from United down the left involving Fernandes and Dorgu wins a corner. The latter attempted to send over a cross and it was blocked.
The Dane has been bright inside these opening 29 minutes.
12:57George Smith
26′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – Everton supporters taunting United
Everton supporters are enjoying themselves now. They are singing, ‘Going down, going down, going down’ at United.
As things stand, Everton are four points above United in the table.
12:55Samuel Luckhurst
25′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – It was clearly onside
Amorim was complaining about the freedom Beto had against the back three for an aerial duel earlier. He had plenty of freedom there.
The wait for that goal was preposterous. You could see there wasn’t an issue from the first replay. I told an Evertonian it was on and then feared the worst amid the inordinate wait. He wasn’t to be denied.
12:54Steven Railston
24′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – Awful from United
That was awful defending from United in the box and they’re behind. Beto takes advantage – he was unmarked – of them failing to clear the ball. It was comical stuff in the box and really not good enough. Around five minutes ago, Amorim was complaining at Beto enjoying too much space and that goal just showed he was right to be concerned.
12:53George Smith
22′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – The goal stands
We’ve had a lengthy VAR check for that one and the goal stands. Everton lead.
12:51Key Event
19′ – EVE 1-0 MUN – GOAL EVERTON! 1-0 (Beto)
Everton take the lead – and it’s the in-form Beto. United failed to deal with a corner, the ball bounced around and it eventually landed at Beto’s feet. He hit it down into the turf and in.
United are appealing for offside.
12:45Steven Railston
15′ – EVE 0-0 MUN – Everton’s pressing is impressive
Everton are pressing brilliantly here. They aren’t giving United any time on the ball and are pushing high up the pitch. Why can’t United press like that? Pickford had the ball before and there was no press. It shouldn’t be hard to deliver maximum intensity.
12:44Samuel Luckhurst
14′ – EVE 0-0 MUN – Everton are constantly pressing
There is not a contrast in pressing. Everton are pressing United and United are not pressing Everton when the other side has the ball in their own third. United have got some good footballers back there – Onana, Maguire, De Ligt and Mazraoui – but they act like they don’t have the wherewithal to play out from the back.
Dorgu’s cross there will offer United some encouragement. He’s playing in front of the away end, so won’t struggle for audible backing this half. United fans have aired their odes to Wayne Rooney and Ji-sung Park already.
12:42Steven Railston
11′ – EVE 0-0 MUN – Beto vs Maguire is a match in itself
Beto just put his hands on Maguire, who saw the funny side of it. It’s going to be interesting to see how their physical battle unfolds because Beto has been a handful since Moyes’ appointment. He looks like a new player and is suddenly a regular starter.
12:38Samuel Luckhurst
8′ – EVE 0-0 MUN – Casemiro is struggling early doors
Casemiro is having a shocker already. Amorim is already on his haunches. Everton scent blood. It is just as well that was a poor corner sent in towards Tarkwoski after Dorgu unnecessarily conceded a corner.
Yoro is still warming up.
12:37Steven Railston
6′ – EVE 0-0 MUN – Everton threaten
That was hugely sloppy from Dalot and Casemiro, which leads to the first chance of the game from Everton. That was so poor from bot
h players and Everton have made a really bright start to the game.
Dorgu has also just swiped at a ball and sent it into the stands. United need to calm down and get a hold of the ball.
