Manchester United lost at Brighton in their second Premier League game of the season at the Amex Stadium.
Almost exactly ten years on from his Old Trafford departure, Danny Welbeck put Brighton 1-0 up against his former club after a misjudgement by Harry Maguire.
Amad wasted a fine chance with the game goalless and Joshua Zirkzee emerged off the bench earlier than on his debut, replacing Mason Mount at the interval.
Amad equalised on the hour. Alejandro Garnacho seemed certain to put United 2-1 up but his goalbound tap-in was diverted in by the offside Zirkzee. Then Pedro headed home unmarked in the 94th minute to win it for the hosts.
Here are how the players rated:
Andre Onana
Played the ball out well and set Diogo Dalot on his way to creating a chance. Got away with a reckless lunge after some risky play in his own third. 6
Noussair Mazraoui
Was performing assuredly until he was caught out for Danny Welbeck’s opening goal. Otherwise another decent outing against more testing opponents. 6
Harry Maguire
Should have dealt with Joao Pedro’s cross that eventually led to Welbeck making it 1-0. Did not play 90 minutes again as he made way for Matthijs de Ligt. 5
Lisandro Martinez
An asset in attack but AWOL for the goal when he was the closest to Welbeck. Left a gap that led to James Milner’s chance at 1-0. 6
Diogo Dalot
Crossed perfectly for Amad to squander a fine chance with the game goalless and cleared off the line from Milner. 7
Casemiro
Started promisingly but his performance level started to drop and he was a defensive liability again. Took a back sear in the second half.
Kobbie Mainoo
Looking like a lad who has not had much of a breather in the past nine months. Might have come off sooner if United had better equipped midfielders. 5
Amad
Should have at least hit the target from Dalot’s cross and cocked up a breakaway with a poor pass. Atoned with the equaliser. 6
Mason Mount
Had his best and most meaningful half in a United shirt but came off at half-time. Presumably, through injury. 6
Marcus Rashford
Strayed offside time and again and was well ahead of play for his offside goal. United’s weakest player and came off just after the hour. 4
Bruno Fernandes
Pointlessly moaned at the referee after Brighton went ahead. Surprisingly substituted when his influenced seemed to be starting to grow. 5
Subs
Joshua Zirkzee
Lucklessly diverted Alejandro Garnacho’s goalbound tap-in over the line from an offside position. 5
Alejandro Garnacho
Thought he had put United 2-1 up but Zirkzee was offside. An upgrade on Rashford. 7
Matthijs de Ligt
Key interception. 5
Scott McTominay
A last throw of the dice on possibly his last united appearance. 6
Antony
Late cameo. N/A
Manager
United played encouragingly for much of the first half but picking an unchanged team was obviously the wrong call. United improved with Garnacho and Zirkzee on. 6
