Aston Villa host Manchester United at Villa Park, Birmingham in game week seven of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Villa have made an impressive start to their Premier League campaign, sitting fifth in the table on 13 points after six games, and come into the game high in confidence after beating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
United, by contrast, have made a stuttering start to their season, with boss Erik ten Hag coming under renewed scrutiny after a run of poor performances has left them 14th in the league with seven points.

Maguire in the book
Lucas Digne whips a delicious cross into the box from the left, finding Bailey at the back post.
But the Jamaican is unable to connect with the cross.
Moments later and Maguire is booked after raising his arm to block the run of Watkins. That has fired up the crowd.

United keeping their shape
The Villa fans are becoming increasingly impatient as a counterattack ends with Evans comfortably dispossessing Watkins.
That move came after a good spell of United pressure.
Villa, however, keep up the momentum and win a corner.

Evans involved again
Better from Villa.
Barkley plays Bailey in down the right. The Villa man tries to return the favour but can’t quite find his teammate in the area.
Evans does well again to clear the danger. That was at least something for the Villa fans to cheer.

Evans rolls back the years
Brilliant defending from Evans who stops Rogers in his tracks with a brilliant, crunching challenge.
The veteran looks in some discomfort after that tackle, but he should be okay to continue.

Villa struggling to click into gear
Villa look a little rusty this afternoon. Perhaps a Champions League hangover?
I expected them to come firing out of the blocks, but they’ve struggled to find a spark.
United will be happy with their performance so far.

United appeal for a penalty
Fernandes wins a free kick on the left after Barkley tugs on his shirt.
Eriksen delivers the set piece into the box towards the head of Maguire. A few United players appeal for a penalty after the ball hit Rogers’ hand in the area.
There was very little that the Villa man could do about that, with his hand inches away from Maguire’s head. Nothing to see here.

Philogene fires wide
Philogene picks up the ball and surges forward before striking a shot from outside the area.
He hits it well, but his effort swerves past the post.

Goalless at the Bridge
Just a reminder that there’s another Premier League game taking place in London, with Chelsea hosting Nottingham Forest. It’s also a stalemate in that one.

Carlos called upon
United get in behind Villa’s high line through Hojlund but Carlos does very well to get back and make an effective challenge on the United forward.
A good start for the substitute.

United waste a set piece
United win a free kick just inside Villa’s half.
Eriksen opts against pumping the ball into the box and the set piece leads to nothing. A bit of a waste.

Another injury scare for Villa with Rogers hobbling around after going down on the touchline, although he looks fine to continue.

Konsa limps off
That’s the end of this match for Konsa. He walks off, but he is limping heavily.
Diego Carlos replaces him.

Konsa looks in some bother here. He has gone down off the ball and is shaking his head as he sits on the floor.

Big chance for Rogers
A fair few Villa fans thought the home side were ahead then.
Watkins lays the ball off to Rogers on the edge of the United area. He fires a shot at goal which skims the side netting and bounces into the back netting.
Despite the optical illusion, it remains goalless.

Eriksen in the book
Villa are seeing more of the ball in these opening stages.
It’s a cracking atmosphere at Villa Park.
The game has barely started and Eriksen is already in the book for dragging back Rogers. Not ideal for United.

We’re under way at Villa Park.

Villa are in their traditional claret and blue home strip, while United are in their away kit of white shirts and socks and black shorts.

Teams in the tunnel
Both sets of players are gearing up for this one.
It sounds like a terrific atmosphere at Villa Park. What a week those fans have had. Bayern Munich in the Champions League and now a big Premier League game against Manchester United.
Not bad eh.

‘We are motivated and excited’
We have also just heard from Villa boss Unai Emery ahead of this fixture:
“We are motivated and very excited to be here at Villa Park with our supporters and get our best energy from them”.
He was also asked about the ‘nice problem’ he faces – managing two in-form strikers:
“How they respond everyday has been fantastic. Ollie Watkins is adapting to working with a new competitive player.
“Jhon (Duran) brings passion. He is ready to play the minute we bring him in. His impact has been fantastic.”

‘We are calm, we are composed’
The man in the spotlight – Erik ten Hag – has been speaking ahead of this one. He started by explaining his decision to change his two centre backs:
“It’s a rotation and we have to bring them all in and of course we look at the opponent and what is needed for this game and then we make a choice”.
He was also asked about the significance of this fixture for United:
“Porto was also a very important game and before we played Spurs it is also an important game – every game is an important game.
“We are calm, we are composed. Not only the team but everybody in the club.”
