He is not a good defender: Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes has issued a bold concern over Manchester United newest signing Matthijs de Ligt over his inexperience in the defence line
Paul Scholes isn’t entirely confident that De Ligt is the man to take Man United forward and solve their defensive crisis.
He said Juventus sold him to Bayern Munich because he wasn’t good enough and Eric Dier benched him at Bayern.
He feels United paid much for a Bayern Munich benchwarmer.
I think he isn’t entirely wrong.

Paul Scholes has issued a bold concern over Manchester United newest rumoured incoming.
Erik ten Hag’s side have already recruited well to bring in Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro so far this summer.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka now heading out it appears as if the Red Devils are closing in on a double swoop for two of Bayern Munich’s stars.
According to The Athletic, United are edging closer to recruiting both Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Scholes however isn’t keen on the former, believing the defender’s past history should be ringing early alarm bells.
“Manchester United are talking about bringing players in who can’t get in their team,” Scholes said on The Overlap.
“From Bayern Munich, he has not played for them. That has to be a big concern for me, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him.
“I’m not joking, that is a massive concern for me.

“When you’re bringing players in for £40-£50 million just because he played for him three or four years ago.

“Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough for Juventus.
“He’s obviously not been good enough at Bayern Munich, so he’s coming to us as like a second-rate defender now.”

Ten Hag of course has history with De Ligt, with the Dutch pair having worked well together at Ajax.
Since his time in Holland, the 24-year-old has struggled to garner consistent minutes for neither Juve or Bayern.
It is clear the United boss still rates the Netherlands international extremely highly, even speaking so boldly regarding the defender when he was just a teenager.

“I do not know if Matthijs de Ligt has shown 60 to 80 per cent of his potential,” Ten Hag said back in 2019.
“But we are talking about one of the best defenders in Europe and I have no doubt that he will soon be number one in this position.”
