It says a lot about Amad’s standing in the current Manchester United squad that he didn’t start against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. Rather than being a rare chance for him to get minutes to impress, he was rested instead.
The brief cameo at the end was hardly worth it but still demonstrated that his position in the group has changed. After a positive pre-season and two goal contributions in four league matches so far, the right-wing spot is his to lose.
Antony may have drawn a penalty and scored it but there wasn’t enough from his performance to displace Amad, who is a more dynamic option. For Erik ten Hag, he may well be closing in on getting things to click after all.

Although hardly down to the attackers alone, the one league game Amad hasn’t started so far resulted in a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. Southampton was a win for most of the team and a positive one at that, and even then his assist didn’t make him a standout.
In general, he has simply managed to slot into being a first-team regular with immense ease. Those around him have been benefitting too.
Not only does Antony have more competition but Alejandro Garnacho will also need to find consistency as well, especially if Marcus Rashford can carry on his bright week away to Crystal Palace. Amad is the one who has the most to gain in the coming weeks though.
