How Would Philadelphia Phillies Trade Package for Houston Astros Kyle Tucker Look?

The Philadelphia Phillies are a team many people expect to make some kind of splash at the Winter Meetings this year.

They were able to improve their regular season win total for the sixth straight 162-game campaign, but fell woefully short of expectations in the playoffs when they earned a bye into the NLDS and were eliminated by the New York Mets in four games.

Looking to avoid another early exit, something has to be done with the roster since they have already seen their biggest competition make huge additions.

The Mets signed Juan Soto to the largest contract in sports history. The defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers bolstered their starting rotation by signing Blake Snell.

Sooner rather than later, the Phillies will have to make a splash to match those moves, whether it is free agency or via trade.

If they go the trade route, one player they should aggressively pursue is Kyle Tucker of the Houston Astros.

His name has come up in trade rumors at the Winter Meetings, as no one is off-limits on their roster when it comes to trade talks. The Astros will always answer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a deal will get done.

Philadelphia would likely have to blow away Houston with an offer since they have plans on contending in 2025 as well.

That could change, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to make those kinds of offers.

What could a deal for Tucker look like?

David Schoenfield of ESPN shared some ideas of pieces that could be on the move in a blockbuster trade.

“If Bregman signs elsewhere as a free agent (maybe even with the Phillies!), Bohm could be a player going back to Houston with outfield prospect Justin Crawford, the player the Astros would most likely demand be included in the deal.”

The MLB writer also mentions Nick Castellanos, who would have to have his contract paid down by the Phillies, Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas as other pieces that the Astros could be interested in.

It makes sense that established MLB players are being thrown around in trade ideas.

Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic also shared some of the discussions the Chicago Cubs are having for the slugging outfielder.

Right fielder Seiya Suzuki and third baseman Isaac Parades have been discussed, along with third base prospect Cam Smith, the team’s first-round pick in the 2024 MLB draft.

It signals that Houston wants to remain competitive in 2025 even if they move on from Tucker, while also having options in case Alex Bregman leaves in free agency.

The Astros are making sure all of their bases are covered and they have contingency plans in place.

Tucker has already proven in his career that he can play at an MVP level when he finished fifth in the voting in 2023. He was producing at an even higher clip in 2024, but injuries limited him to only 78 games.

Adding a player of that caliber to the outfield mix would greatly improve the team’s offense.

Navigating a lineup that includes Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper was already tough enough, but adding the slugging Tucker into the mix would make things even more difficult for opposing pitching staffs.

That type of move is what it will take for Philadelphia to keep pace with the other contenders who have already thrown around some big money before and during Winter Meetings to build their own championship rosters in 2025 and beyond.

MLB winter meetings winners, losers: Texas wins a trade, Miami’s bad luck

DALLAS — As the MLB winter meetings came to a close on Wednesday, it was clear that some teams walked out of the Hilton Anatole better than they were when they arrived in the Lone Star State. On the flip side, there were a couple of teams that didn’t have the best luck or come out of Dallas with the player they wanted. With that in mind, here are the winners and losers from this year’s winter meetings. Winners Texas Rangers The hometown team not only reportedly inked Nathan Eovaldi to a three-year deal to solidify its rotation, but also landed Jake Burger in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Burger will provide some good pop for the Rangers and shake up a lineup that underperformed last season after reaching the World Series the year before. St. Louis Cardinals The Cardinals had the 13th-best odds of landing the top overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft, yet skyrocketed all the way to the fifth-best spot thanks to the luck of the ping pong balls. St. Louis hasn’t picked as high as number five since 1998 when the franchise selected J.D. Drew. In an offseason where the Cardinals have parted ways with Paul Goldschmidt and are reportedly in talks to trade Nolan Arenado, having a surprise high pick in next year’s draft is at least a positive for St. Louis. Losers Miami Marlins There were plenty of questions about the Burger trade, including why the Marlins would part ways with a player who was under team control through the 2028 campaign and was far and away the home run leader for Miami last season (Burger had 29 homers while a pair of players finished tied for second with 18). Additionally, the initial thoughts on the return for Miami were underwhelming. Also, Miami was tied with the Colorado Rockies for the best odds to get the top draft pick in 2025 (22.5 percent), but plummeted all the way to seventh. Pair those two events together and it wasn’t a few good days for the Marlins. Baltimore Orioles For a team that is going to be fighting for the top of the American League East again this season, the task got a little tougher for the Orioles during this year’s winter meetings. The New York Yankees picked up Max Fried and the Boston Red Sox made a trade for Garrett Crochet, so the level of pitching in the division went up. Throw in that the Orioles are still trying to bring back Corbin Burnes or find his replacement and there are suddenly more questions about Baltimore’s pitching than two of their top rivals. That puts Baltimore at a disadvantage as the winter meetings break up.

Insiders link Tom Brady, Raiders with big-name replacement for Antonio Pierce

The Las Vegas Raiders have fallen to 2-11 during Antonio Pierce’s first season as the club’s full-time head coach. Understandably, this has some wondering if team owner Mark Davis could consider hiring an upgrade come January. For a piece published Wednesday, NFL insiders Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN explained why former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is being mentioned by some within the league as a potential replacement for Pierce. “The addition of Tom Brady to the ownership group has potentially altered the dynamic, as team owner Mark Davis would like Brady to have a real role in the decision-making,” Graziano said about the Raiders possibly moving on from Pierce after one completed campaign. Meanwhile, Fowler noted that “Brady’s influence as a minority owner there could loom large for Vrabel or others with ties to the former quarterback.” Last winter, Vrabel was first linked with the Raiders, long before Brady officially became a limited franchise partner. The two “were very close over eight years as teammates (with the New England Patriots) and have maintained a relationship since,” NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated explained in January. While Pierce hasn’t covered himself in glory during a season in which the Raiders have no legitimate quarterback answer, Vrabel went 54-45 with the Titans and won the Associated Press Coach of the Year Award for the 2021 campaign. Brady is expected to help recruit personnel to the Raiders “on every level” but may have some competition if he’s serious about convincing Davis to hire Vrabel. Vrabel reportedly would consider speaking with New York Jets owner Woody Johnson about that club’s opening, and it’s still unclear if Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will either move on from Mike McCarthy after Week 18 or sign McCarthy to a new deal. The Chicago Bears could also call Vrabel if they’re not married to the idea of hiring an offensive guru as head coach to work with quarterback Caleb Williams. “The Raiders make a lot of sense, should that job open,” Fowler added about where Vrabel may land. As for Pierce, he’ll have to try to focus on stacking wins beginning with Las Vegas’ matchup versus the 6-7 Atlanta Falcons this coming Monday night. As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Raiders as 4.5-point underdogs for that contest.

Patrik Allvin announces roster move on Vancouver Canucks blue line

Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has announced on Wednesday that defenceman Mark Friedman is being sent to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks. The demotion comes one day after Friedman worked his way into the starting lineup, taking the place of Erik Brannstrom against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night in a somewhat surprising lineup move. The Canucks would go on to lose to the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in overtime, with Friedman ending up on the score sheet with one shot on goal and four hits. Brannstrom played in all 23 games since his call up to the Canucks, and has 7 points in those games playing just shy of 15 minutes a game – his healthy scratch comes as a bit of a surprise. Friedman hasn’t played much this season, the D-man suffered a scary head injury in October and has been limited to 8 games played in the AHL. Wednesday night was Friedman’s first NHL appearance of the season, and he’ll play a prominent role on Abbotsford’s blue line. Vancouver Canucks currently running skeleton crew The Vancouver Canucks have started to get healthier as a team, welcoming players back throughout the last month and on Tuesday of course seeing Thatcher Demko make his long awaited return to game action. As of right now, the team is running with just six D and twelve forwards – with no extras on the roster. Vancouver will accrue extra cap space by doing so – but the roster move could also signify that Derek Forbort is nearly ready to return to the lineup for the Canucks.

One of the nation’s most efficient QBs entering transfer portal

College Football

One of the nation’s most efficient QBs entering transfer portal

The California Golden Bears received some unfortunate news at the QB position on Wednesday. QB Fernando Mendoza announced that he is entering the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Max Olson. Mendoza’s announcement comes after the redshirt sophomore had a phenomenal season with the Bears. Mendoza passed for 3,004 yards, which was sixth in the ACC and the ninth-most in a single season in school history, per Sports Illustrated’s Jake Curtis. His completion percentage (68.7 percent) is currently 10th in the country, according to TeamRankings. Mendoza took to social media Wednesday morning to officially break the news himself. While Cal only went 6-6 in its debut season in the ACC, Mendoza had several bright spots throughout the season. While the Golden Bears lost to then-No. 8 Miami, 39-38, Mendoza accounted for 285 passing yards and two TDs. He helped Cal close out the regular season with a 24-21 win over Stanford after leading the Golden Bears on a game-winning, 98-yard TD drive. Overall, Mendoza passed for 200 or more yards in all but two games during the 2024 season, recording multiple TD passes in six of them. With Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward heading to the NFL, the Miami native Mendoza could potentially join the Hurricanes next season. While that seems like a realistic possibility, Mendoza’s younger brother, Alberto, is currently on the Indiana roster and the Hoosiers are going to need to find a replacement for QB Kurtis Rourke. Regardless of Mendoza’s decision, Cal is losing an efficient pocket-passer. The talented QB still has two seasons of eligibility remaining, so he will be highly sought after as several high-profile teams plan for the future.
