Manchester United cruised into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a thumping 7-0 victory over Barnsley at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Leading 3-0 at half-time via goals from Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony, United took the League One side to the cleaners in the second half, scoring four more goals without reply.

First, Garnacho and Rashford each netted their second goals of the evening, each dispatching good finishes, before Christian Eriksen netted a rare brace to complete the rout.

United, who had never previously scored more than four goals in a game under manager Erik ten Hag, had even more chances to score, with Garnacho guilty of spurning a chance to complete his hat-trick and Antony twice being denied by Barnsley goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina.

The Reds will discover their fourth round opponents for the Carabao Cup when the draw is made on Wednesday, September 25.

REPORT: Rashford reaction and Casemiro gesture spark United thrashing of Barnsley

Marcus Rashford harrumphed at Christian Eriksen’s failure to pass to him one minute. When Alejandro Garnacho did minutes later, Rashford demonstrated why he merited the service.

Rashford’s first Old Trafford goal in six months was reminiscent of the purposeful and direct talisman of two years ago. Manchester United had started sloppily yet Rashford was sharp before he weaved through two Barnsley defenders and threatened to break the net.

Those in the Stretford End who vented at Rashford at the start of the month against Liverpool serenaded him. Just as the away following had at Southampton.

As troublesome as Rashford’s early performances this season were, he has been in the thick of it: clear-cut chances against Manchester City, a one-on-one against Fulham, a disallowed goal at Brighton and two presentable openings created for Joshua Zirkzee against Liverpool. Now he is on three goals in six starts.

PLAYER RATINGS: Rashford and Garnacho shine as United score seven

United cruised into the Carabao Cup fourth round this evening, beating Barnsley 7-0 at Old Trafford.

Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen each helped themself to a brace while Antony converted a penalty to get himself on the scoresheet.

Here is a flavour of how Samuel Luckhurst rated United’s players out of 10…

Altay Bayindir

Made his home debut nearly 13 months on from his arrival and had little to do despite a bullish Barnsley start. 6

Diogo Dalot

Back at right back and more central to United’s attacking moves, albeit against third-tier opponents. Came off early, having started every game this season. 7

Harry Maguire

A calm performance on a routine night ahead of his probable bench role at Crystal Palace on Saturday. 6

21:29George Smith

68′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – Garnacho should have a hat-trick

More great play from United, this time involving Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes. The latter rolls the ball across the face of goal and Alejandro Garnacho looks destined to score, only to turn it over the bar.

He will be kicking himself if he doesn’t get another chance.

21:24George Smith

64′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – Antony goes close

Antony is hungry to add another goal to his tally as he cuts inside and bends an effort towards goal that has to be tipped over the bar.

21:23George Smith

63′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – Triple United change

OFF: Manuel Ugarte, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot

62′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – Garnacho has been superb

Alejandro Garnacho has been absolutely outstanding so far tonight, scoring two and creating two.

21:19George Smith

60′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – Ten Hag on course for his biggest win

With 30 minutes still to go, United could ensure their supporters get more than their money’s worth, here.

They already have five goals and that is the most they have ever scored in a game under Erik Ten Hag.

21:17KEY EVENT

58′ – MUN 5-0 BFC – GOAL UNITED! 5-0 (Rashford)

It’s raining goals at Old Trafford!

Alejandro Garnacho slips Marcus Rashford in and he makes no mistake to score his second, this time from the left channel of the penalty area.

21:10KEY EVENT

49′ – MUN 4-0 BFC – GOAL UNITED! 4-0 (Garnacho)

What a brilliant goal that is! Barnsley send bodies up the pitch and United win possession back.

Christian Eriksen sends a lovely ball over the top for Alejandro Garnacho to get on the end of and he breaks free and makes no mistake to score his second.

Game over.

21:04George Smith

46′ – MUN 3-0 BFC – Second half kicks-off

We are back under way at Old Trafford. Barnsley have made a hat-trick of changes at the break.

20:51KEY EVENT

Bayindir

Quiet half. 6

Dalot

Good attacking intent. 7

Maguire

Calm. 6

Evans

Assured. 7

Collyer

Error-strewn but shouldn’t be at left back. 5

Casemiro

Sloppy at times but better further forward. 6

Ugarte

Busy. 6

Eriksen

Some nice moments. 6

Garnacho

Fine pass for Rashford’s goal. 7

Rashford

Fabulous goal. 8

Antony

Won and scored the penalty. 6

20:49KEY EVENT

HALF-TIME: MUN 3-0 BFC – United in control

There goes the half-time whistle. United are in complete control and already have one foot in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Marcus Rashford, Antony (P) and Alejandro Garnacho have got the goals.

20:48KEY EVENT

45+2′ – MUN 3-0 BFC – GOAL UNITED! 3-0 (Garnacho)

Alejandro Garnacho gets his goal! The ball falls his way inside the penalty area and he toe pokes it home to put this tie to bed on the stroke of half-time.

20:46George Smith

45′ – MUN 2-0 BFC – Two minutes added on

There will be two additional minutes at the end of this first half.

20:43Tyrone Marshall

42′ – MUN 2-0 BFC – Antony is growing in confidence after his goal

United look likely to add to their tally now, in total control of the game and better decision making around the final third could have already produced a third goal. Antony growing in confidence after winning the penalty and taking it. The front three all look like causing problems for the Barnsley defence, who suddenly look outmatched.

20:41George Smith

39′ – MUN 2-0 BFC – United hungry for more

United are firmly in charge of this game now. They are getting plenty of joy down the flanks and Alejandro Garnacho should have tested the goalkeeper a moment or so ago in pursuit of United’s third goal, yet he decided to try and square the ball when it looked easier to shoot.

20:38Samuel Luckhurst

37′ – MUN 2-0 BFC – Casemiro had a word with Antony

Casemiro went over to Antony and seemed to tell him he would be taking that after Marcus Rashford was getting ready to step up. It was a neat penalty, in fairness.

Every United winger has now scored this season.

20:37KEY EVENT

35′ – MUN 2-0 BFC – GOAL UNITED! 2-0 (Antony)

Antony makes no mistake from the penalty spot, firing the ball to the goalkeeper’s left.

It’s his first goal since April.

20:35KEY EVENT

34′ – MUN 1-0 BFC – UNITED PENALTY!

United are awarded a penalty as Antony is taken out by the Barnsley goalkeeper, Gabriel Slonina, who is yellow carded.

20:33Tyrone Marshall

31′ – MUN 1-0 BFC – A lovely United move, but the flag goes up

That was a slick move by United and although it didn’t matter in the end it wasn’t offside either. Casemiro’s flicked pass to Diogo Dalot was a thing of beauty and it’s those balls that the Brazilian is better at now. He should be unleashed further forward. United settled down since Marcus Rashford’s goal and look in control now. A similar story to the weekend.

20:29George Smith

28′ – MUN 1-0 BFC – Rashford is regaining confidence

It’s amazing what two goals in as many games can do. The confidence is oozing out of Marcus Rashford so far this evening.

He looks threatening every time he gets on the ball, looking to take on his man and get United up the pitch.

So far, Erik ten Hag’s decision to keep him in the team tonight has been fully vindicated.

20:24George Smith

23′ – MUN 1-0 BFC – Barnsley targeting Collyer

Barnsley are targeting Toby Collyer at left-back for United, with the bulk of their attacks coming down their right.

Barry Cotter has just won Barnsley a free-kick level with the penalty area after being fouled by Collyer.
