Erik ten Hag has fired a warning shot to Manchester United’s owners insisting he has delivered a top-four finish without being backed in January. The United manager used his post-match address on the pitch after beating Fulham to stir the crowd ahead of next Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City.

But he later aimed a sideswipe at United’s owners claiming his side’s achievement in finishing third came against the odds. The Dutchman has told whoever is in charge at Old Trafford – whether it be the Glazers or new ownership – that he must be backed properly to mount a sufficient challenge for more trophies next season.

There remains uncertainty over the long-term make-up of the Red Devils hierarchy. A takeover process is still ongoing, with Jim Ratcliffe, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and a host of minority bidders hoping to replace the Glazer family.

“The club knows if you want to play top four, compete for trophies in this league then you have to invest otherwise you don’t have a chance because other clubs will do,” he said.

“We’ve seen it in the winter, all the clubs around us made huge investments, we didn’t, but still we made it, so I’m proud of my team.”

United made just three loan signings in January – Jack Butland, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer. Sabitzer has been a success playing some influential games but Weghorst has scored just two goals in 30 games with none in the Premier League.

Newcastle and Arsenal spent around £50million in January, Liverpool £37m and Chelsea over £250m. United will have a chance to not only play Champions League football next season after their third-placed finish but have the possibility to add the FA Cup to the Carabao Cup next weekend.

Ten Hag said history gave them hope of upsetting their star-studded neighbours. “You have always a chance in football, history shows we beat them in January and Manchester United in the last couple of years beat City many times.

“These players know when they play at their levels they can compete and it’s obvious, we play against the best team, but there is a chance and we have to go for the chance and give everything. We can’t find excuses to ourselves after the game.”

United signed off the 2022-23 Premier League campaign by beating Fulham 2-1. Ten Hag’s side face an all-Manchester FA Cup final against City on June 3.
