Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki scored late goals as Manchester City came from behind to win at Swansea City and book a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Goncalo Franco’s memorable strike had given the Championship side an early lead but Jeremy Doku’s deflected effort brought Pep Guardiola’s team level before the break.

Manchester City, eight-time winners of this competition, dominated after the break and eventually broke Swansea’s resistance when Marmoush lashed home after Cherki’s through-ball 13 minutes from time.

France international Cherki, who like Marmoush was back afer injury, sealed victory in added time as his low shot rolled into the bottom corner for his first goal since August.

Swansea, who are 13th in the Championship, were dreaming of an upset after their sharp start troubled their heavyweight opponents.

Melker Widell, one of six Swansea changes, spread the ball wide to Josh Key and he squared for Franco, whose glorious 20-yard strike arced into the top corner.

Abdukodir Khusanov’s poor pass then presented Widell with a chance to double the lead, but the Swede’s low shot was touched wide of the post by James Trafford.

With Guardiola’s decision to make 10 changes threatening to backfire, the eight-time League Cup winners eventually found some momentum.

The impressive Cherki was denied an equaliser as he poked against the post but, with Swansea creaking, Doku turned sharply inside Key and his low shot ricocheted into the net off Cameron Burgess.

From that point the visitors took control, although clear-cut chances were at a premium until Marmoush smashed a first club goal of the season and Cherki’s precise finish put the result beyond doubt.

Guardiola’s side will host Brentford in the last eight.

Manchester City analysis: Classy response after Villa defeat

For only the second time this season, there was no Erling Haaland for Manchester City as Guardiola made wholesale changes, just as he had done in the third-round win at Huddersfield.

For a while, his side were troubled defensively, and they struggled to break their opponents down despite dominating territory and possession for the final hour of the contest.

But there was always the sense they would get there in the end, and ultimately the Premier League giants’ class was too much for Swansea as Alan Sheehan’s team ran out of energy.

Having been beaten for the first time in 10 games at Aston Villa on Sunday, this was the response Manchester City required as they look to ahead to a challenging run of top-flight fixtures.

They can also look forward to a last-eight appearance in this competition for only the second time since 2021, when they won the Carabao Cup for the fourth successive time.

Swansea analysis: Valiant effort offers hope for Championship

Swansea’s thrilling comeback victory over Nottingham Forest in the previous round of this competition was the highlight of their season so far.

Their brilliant start here gave a sold-out home crowd hope of an even bigger shock, with their energy, tempo and quality in possession troubling their much-vaunted opponents.

Sheehan was left to reflect on a valiant effort from his team, whose challenge now is to find some more consistency in their league campaign.

If they produce this sort of intensity on a regular basis in the Championship, they should have the quality to hit their target for this season, which is to compete for a play-off place.

What they said

Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan:

“I’m very proud of the team, the football club, the fans, how everybody conducted themselves.

“The atmosphere was wonderful. I think we started the game incredibly well, on the front foot, went 1-0 up, then we had an opportunity to make it 2-0. You have to be perfect against this kind of team.

“You have to understand the pressure that they put you under and they camp you into these areas.

“In the end, we ran out of a bit of steam if you want to say it, but in terms of attitude, endeavour, honesty, I think we were wonderful.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola:

“Swansea started really well, we started with a really good tempo.

“We were not flat but they were better. In this competition, the first minutes the home team always makes a boost and they deserved a goal.

“I would say they were impressive but [from] 20-25 minutes, we take the game.

“In general the team was a little bit better. We arrived with more chances and the second half everybody was there and the movements were perfect in the right moment.

“I am really pleased for the game because I know how difficult it is away and we are in the quarter-finals.”
