Kevin De Bruyne starts for Napoli, who are also unchanged from a weekend victory, in their case a 3-1 triumph at Fiorentina. Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund are also back in Manchester.

Man City team news

Pep Guardiola sticks with the XI that started against United in the derby. That’s a bit of a surprise – City play at the Emirates on Sunday so I thought he might rest a couple of players with that in mind.

Good evening

Hello and welcome to live, minute-by-minute coverage of Manchester City v Napoli at the Etihad Stadium. It’s one of the standout matches of the first round of Champions League fixtures – not least because Kevin De Bruyne, perhaps the greatest player in City’s history, is returning to the Etihad only a few months after being released.

Even without De Bruyne’s presence, this would be a box-office fixture: the dominant English team of the last decade versus the current Italian champions. City have had a mixed start to the season, and any judgement on their chances of major silverware this season should probably be deferred until after Sunday’s match at Arsenal, but there were some encouraging signs in their 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola will be keen to avoid the drama of last season’s Champions League campaign, when City lost five of their last eight games and were well beaten by Real Madrid in the playoff round. So, are City contenders to win the big one?

“Apparently we are not!” said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference. “We are happy to be here after the path we have been on so we are just focusing on tomorrow and starting well in this competition. If you start with a bad result it can be difficult, last season we drew the first game against Inter and hopefully we can do better.”

De Bruyne has hit the ground swaggering in Naples, scoring twice in his first three Serie A games. “It’s not a surprise,” said Pep Guardiola. “Players at that level adapt so quick. They don’t need much time to adapt and perform well.”

City know exactly what they are up against tonight. But forewarned is not always forearmed.
