Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has addressed rumours linking him to Manchester City and Arsenal. He confirmed he had spoken with Pep Guardiola. The Brazilian midfielder also dropped hints about his future at St James’ Park.

Both clubs reportedly wanted Guimaraes during the summer transfer window. However, Newcastle managed to keep their star midfielder.

In an interview with Globo Esporte, Guimaraes shared details of his conversation with Guardiola. He also expressed his admiration for Newcastle.

“I believe that at my club I am an idol, and I have a lot of respect.

“I am the captain of Newcastle, and if you had asked me three years ago, my biggest dream would have been to play in the Premier League.

“Playing, being an idol, being captain is something wonderful. I really like Newcastle.

“Of course, having Manchester City’s interest shows that I am at a high level, but it was nothing more than interest.

“I know that Guardiola likes my football. It is normal to have great coaches who admire your football.

“We [Bruno and Pep] have spoken once. I praised his work, he praised my work, but it was nothing more than that.”

Guimaraes signed a new contract with Newcastle in October 2023. His deal runs until 2028, giving Newcastle a strong position in any negotiations.

Over the summer, his £100 million release clause expired without being activated. This made it easier for Newcastle to hold on to him.

To comply with Financial Fair Play rules, Newcastle sold other players instead. Sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson ensured no regulations were breached.
