Only five players in Manchester United’s history have commanded fees of £25million or more when they have been sold: David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel di Maria, Romelu Lukaku and Daniel James.
United’s history of unimpressive sales has caught up with them amid the squeeze of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules. In the last two summer transfer windows, four of United’s five biggest sales – James Garner, Andreas Pereira, Anthony Elanga and Dean Henderson – have been academy graduates. Homegrown sales represent a pure profit.
United have already set their stall out with the departure of Alvaro Fernandez, an academy left back who moved to Benfica permanently in a €9m deal.
Compliance with PSR and their worst league season in 34 years make substantial sales essential this summer if United are to climb up the ladder next season. The club are open to offers for several players but, realistically, United would overachieve if they broke double figures for senior sales.
