Stevens, a rising senior and one of the most electric players in Florida high school softball, made the announcement on social media Monday evening. The post, which featured a picture of her in burnt orange and white gear, was captioned simply: “For the one who believed in me before I believed in myself. This is for you, Dad. Hook ‘em.”

“My dad was born and raised in Austin. He was a Texas Longhorn through and through. Every Saturday, no matter what was going on, we’d watch Texas football together. He used to joke that one day I’d be wearing burnt orange,” Stevens said with a smile, fighting back emotion. “He passed away from cancer when I was 13. At the time, I didn’t know if I even wanted to keep playing softball. But I kept going, and every time I step on the field, I feel like he’s with me.”

“It just felt right. I walked onto Red & Charline McCombs Field, and I felt like I was home. It was more than softball. It was like my dad was walking with me,” she added.
