“Next-Level Legend: Future Longhorn Hannah Wells Crowned 2024-25 Gatorade National Player of the Year After Historic Season for the Ages”
AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Longhorns Softball program just added another gem to its glittering crown. In what has been a monumental year for high school softball across the nation, no name has shone brighter than Hannah Wells, the Coahoma High School phenom who has officially been named the 2024-2025 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year.
Set to join the University of Texas in the fall, Wells has already written her name into the high school history books with a season that many are calling one of the most dominant performances in recent memory—if not ever.
Wells wasn’t just good—she was generational. The 2024 season saw her lead Coahoma High School to a 3A Division II State Championship, ending the year with an astonishing 35–1 team record. Her leadership on and off the field, combined with her dual-threat dominance in the circle and at the plate, made her a force no opponent could contain.
In the pitcher’s circle, Wells was virtually untouchable. She posted a mind-blowing 22-1 win-loss record, and her 0.44 ERA (earned run average) speaks to just how few scoring opportunities she allowed opponents throughout the season. Across over 150 innings pitched, she struck out an astounding 258 batters, demonstrating a mix of velocity, movement, and poise that’s rarely seen at the high school level.
But if her pitching was dominant, her hitting was historic.
Wells not only maintained a jaw-dropping .602 batting average, she also racked up 75 RBIs—a clear indication of her clutch gene and ability to come through when it mattered most. But perhaps the most jaw-dropping statistic of all: 31 home runs. Not only did that lead the state—it broke the all-time Texas single-season record for home runs.
Let that sink in. In a state known for producing softball greats year after year, no one has ever hit more homers in a season than Hannah Wells. Her swing, a blend of raw power and perfect timing, terrorized pitchers and turned her into a walking highlight reel.
“This season has been unreal,” Wells said after receiving the Gatorade National Player of the Year honor. “I’m just grateful to my teammates, coaches, and family for always believing in me. I couldn’t have done any of this without them. I’m proud of what we accomplished at Coahoma, and I’m beyond excited to bring that same energy to Austin.”
The Gatorade National Player of the Year Award recognizes not just athletic excellence but also academic achievement and exemplary character. Wells checks all those boxes and more. Known for her leadership in the locker room and her humility in the spotlight, she’s the kind of athlete every coach dreams of.
“Hannah is one of the most complete players I’ve ever coached,” said Coahoma head coach Scott Simmons. “She works harder than anyone, never takes a play off, and lifts up everyone around her. She deserves every bit of this recognition.”
And the excitement isn’t limited to Coahoma. In Austin, the Longhorn faithful are already buzzing about the addition of Wells to a program that has consistently remained among the top national contenders in college softball. With Texas Head Coach Mike White at the helm, Wells is expected to make an immediate impact when she steps onto McCombs Field.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Hannah to the Forty Acres,” said White. “She’s a game-changer in every sense. Her talent is obvious, but it’s her drive, work ethic, and leadership that make her truly special. We believe she has the potential to become one of the all-time greats in Texas softball.”
As Wells wraps up her senior year, her story is far from over—it’s just getting started. With the kind of rare talent that can shape a program’s future, Texas fans may want to get their horns up early and often.
Because if Hannah Wells’ high school career is any indication of what’s to come, the next chapter in Austin is going to be nothing short of legendary.
