The Premier League champions stated that Guardiola had been ‘suffering with severe back pain for some time lately’. City have confirmed the operation was a success with Guardiola set to remain in Spain to recover.

The club statement read: “In his absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will oversee coaching of the first team on the training field and will assume duties on the touchline until Pep’s return.

Guardiola will now be missing from the touchline for City’s next two Premier League games against Sheffield United and Fulham. It’s not the first time Guardiola has been hospitalised with back problems having needed treatment back in March 2011.

The Spaniard was suffering from acute lower back pain when he was taken to hospital overnight. He was diagnosed with a spinal disc hernia before going on to lead Barcelona to glory in the Champions League as well as a third successive La Liga title.

Arsenal victims of their own success as Mikel Arteta misses out on £26m transfer

The man who will take Guardiola’s spot in the City dugout, Lillo, rejoined Guardiola’s backroom staff this summer. Enzo Maresca was Guardiola’s No 2 last season before he left to take over at Leicester City.

Lillo had left City in 2022 after working with Guardiola for two years to take up a job in Qatar’s top flight. But Guardiola was delighted to have Lillo back working by his side when his return was confirmed this summer.

Guardiola said: “Juanma sees things no one else in the game sees. He understands football on an incredible level, so he is the perfect person for me to work alongside. I have always been inspired by him – his knowledge of football, his intelligence and his humanity mark him out as a very special person in my life – and we have a shared ideology.”
