Manchester United host bitter rivals Liverpool in the final match of gameweek three in the Premier League.

The match kicks off at 4pm local time (15:00 GMT) at Old Trafford, Manchester.

United’s boss Erik ten Hag is already under pressure after a stuttering start that included an unconvincing opening day win over Fulham and a 2-1 defeat at Brighton, leaving the Red Devils in 13th place.

Liverpool, however, have made a strong start under new boss Arne Slot, with two 2-0 wins from two against Ipswich Town and Brentford leaving the Merseysiders in fourth.

United boss takes heart from FA Cup victory over Liverpool

Liverpool are a more mature side than Manchester United, with the advantage of a cohesive team of established players, United manager Erik ten Hag said ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash.

“Liverpool are in a different phase of the life cycle,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday. “They are a mature team with players who have played together for a long time and are very experienced. We are much more mixed and we have to build a new team.”

United have not beaten Liverpool in the league since a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in August 2022 though ten Hag’s men did prevail 4-3 over former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way to winning the FA Cup last season.

Liverpool finished third in the league last season, five places and 22 points ahead of United, but ten Hag said his side could take heart from their performance in the cup final.

“We can always win, last year we won [in the FA cup] in the second part of the season,” the Dutchman said.

“[Liverpool] are a team who are clear in the relationship among their players. It’s what [Slot] has inherited. It was built over the last few years.”

‘Everyone knows how important this game is’

Slot – who managed Feyenoord against ten Hag’s Ajax in his previous role – understands the significance whenever the two most decorated sides in English football history meet.

“Some people tell me a few things about this fixture, but when you work at LFC, everyone knows how important this game vs United is,” Slot said. “It’s similar to how important Ajax vs Feyenoord is, but I know the importance of Liverpool vs United.”

Slot said he was looking forward to visiting Old Trafford, where he lost 4-0 with AZ Alkmaar in 2019.

“Many of these players have played there before so I don’t think I have to prepare them for the 75,000 [fans]; they’ve been used to this,” Slot said.

“I have prepared them in the best possible way for what they can expect because United play, in my opinion, a bit different than the last two seasons.”

Elsewhere in the Premier League

It’s half-time in the two other Premier League games taking place right now.

Chelsea are leading Crystal Palace 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, thanks to a goal by Nicolas Jackson.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are 1-0 ahead against Spurs through a Harvey Barnes goal at St James’ Park.

Ten Hag refuses to blame Zirkzee for botching goal

At 1-1 against Brighton last weekend, United had a good spell and nearly made it 2-1 when Alejandro Garnacho’s shot on target was deflected in by Joshua Zirkzee, with VAR chalking off the goal because the Dutch forward was offside while sliding in.

Had Zirkzee not made contact, United would have completed the comeback. But ten Hag refused to blame the 23-year-old, who scored on his debut in a 1-0 win over Fulham last weekend.

“It was difficult. In the moment he was on the slide. If he had read the situation better, maybe he could have avoided it but you can do nothing once you are on the slide, you can’t avoid the ball,” ten Hag said.

“It’s tough but also we created many more chances to score a second goal. We showed resilience and fought back, we had our opportunities to score more goals. It’s disappointing when you don’t win and then you lose.”

Ten Hag rues United’s tendency to concede late

Manchester United must find a way to focus until the full-time whistle and stop conceding late goals, ten Hag said after Brighton scored in added time in last Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win.

United conceded two soft goals at the Amex where Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored against his former club before an unmarked Joao Pedro scored the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Once a team renowned for scoring late goals in the Premier League, United have now lost six times since the 2022-23 season thanks to goals scored in or after the 90th minute – more than any other side.

“We have good potential but we have to keep going until the end. We concede a goal in stoppage time,” ten Hag told the BBC.

“The game is finished when the referee whistles three times. That is what we did not do well, so we have to improve that game management.

“Two soft goals and we have to be more clinical in both boxes and act better as a team. It’s a pity that we are without any points here. We have to get up and go for the next big game [at home to Liverpool].”

Salah wants to ‘enjoy’ final year of Liverpool contract

Mohamed Salah said he is not focused on his future beyond this season, with less than a year to run on his contract at Liverpool.

The Egyptian forward has written himself into the record books of the English giants, scoring 213 goals since joining in 2017.

The 32-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, scoring in both of Slot’s first two games in charge as Liverpool beat Ipswich and Brentford.

Salah is just one of three huge players for Liverpool out of contract at the end of the season, along with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Before the season, I was just like ‘I’ve got one year left, let’s just enjoy it and don’t think about the contract’,” Salah told Sky Sports.

“I don’t want to think about next year or the future, I just want to enjoy the last year and let’s see. The most important thing is to take one day at a time and just be grateful to be here.”

Ugarte signing takes United’s summer spending to $240m

Manchester United signed Uruguay defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial 50 million euros ($55.3m) on Friday, with the transfer announced only in the final hour of the summer transfer window.

Ugarte is United’s fifth signing of the window – after striker Joshua Zirkzee, center backs Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, and fullback Noussair Mazraoui – and takes the club’s summer spending on new players to nearly $240m.

Earlier on Friday, United sold Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli for 30 million euros ($33.2m), a transfer which created space in the squad for Ugarte.

The 23-year-old Ugarte, who has signed a contract until 2029, has been a target of United throughout the summer and looks set to be the long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is 32.

“Signing Manuel was another of our primary targets for this summer. He is among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world,” United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth said.

Slot excited about new signing Chiesa

Liverpool’s boss said he is excited about the arrival of versatile attacker Federico Chiesa but will be careful to introduce the 26-year-old into action gradually.

Chiesa joined from Juventus on Thursday in a deal worth 12 million euros ($13.3m) plus three million ($3.3m) in add-ons.

He suffered a serious knee injury in 2022 that sidelined him for 10 months, but he bounced back and last season scored 10 goals and registered three assists in 37 appearances for Juventus across all competitions.

“He works really hard, on and off the pitch, to try to get the best out of him, and he combines this with scoring goals,” Slot said on Friday. “Really aggressive without the ball … can play in so many positions.

“We should take care of him in the beginning because he didn’t train with the team in the last two weeks … we will build him up in the right way and hopefully we can see his quality in the near future.”

Liverpool’s early team news

Slot said his only injury concern was midfielder Curtis Jones – who missed the last game against Brentford.

“At the moment there are not any other injuries except for Curtis Jones. He will not train with us today, Slot said on Friday. “But the rest [of the squad] will train with us today.”

The Reds have completed the signing of forward Federico Chiesa from Juventus, but Slot said it’s unlikely that the Italian international will feature on Sunday as he is still returning to full fitness.

Possible starting XI:

Alisson (GK); Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk (C), Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota

Midfielder Mason Mount, who was withdrawn at half-time against Brighton, will be out for a few games with a muscle injury.

Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro were also unavailable for the Brighton game due to injuries and will likely miss out again today.

Dutch duel at Old Trafford

Arne Slot has made a perfect start to the daunting task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager with two wins from his opening two Premier League games without conceding a goal.

His first chance to seriously impress the Liverpool support comes at one of Klopp’s least favourite grounds as English football’s two most successful clubs face off at Old Trafford.

Despite Liverpool largely enjoying the superior league position during Klopp’s near nine-year reign, he won just two of his 11 away games to United.

That run included a 4-3 FA Cup quarterfinal exit and a 2-2 Premier League draw last season that precipitated a Liverpool collapse in his final few months in charge.

Yet the pressure is arguably even more on the Dutch manager in the other dugout.

Erik ten Hag was backed by those at the top of United’s new sporting structure at the end of last season despite finishing eighth – the club’s worst-ever Premier League performance.

Hope of a new dawn for the Red Devils has been diminished in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee’s late winner on his debut at least ensured a winning start against Fulham, but a 2-1 defeat to Brighton last weekend had many of the same hallmarks that have seen United struggle previously under Ten Hag.
