Manchester United fans are furious after Casemiro was the victim of a shocking tackle in a pre-season friendly against Rosenborg.

United begun their pre-season schedule at Rosenborg on Monday, with Erik ten Hag fielding a young team to take on the Norwegian side.

Amid an XI of youngsters, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Casemiro all featured from the start against the Norwegian side, with the latter the subject of a horror challenge in the first half.

Tomas Nemcik lunged for a loose ball, only to miss and connect with Casemiro’s shin.

While the Brazil international was able to continue after receiving treatment, Nemcik was lucky only to be brandished a yellow card.

Fans on social media were furious at the challenge on the midfielder.

Writing on X, one person said: “Some of the tackle on our lads are horrendous. Casemiro lucky not be injured. Mount has also been given some rough tackles.”

A second said: “I know it’s a friendly, but that was a red card! Awful tackle! Genuinely could have been a leg breaker.”

A third wrote: “Someone needs to absolutely take out that Nemcik lad for Rosenborg. Nearly broke Casemiro’s leg and completely cleaned Hannibal out of it. ”

A fourth added: “Nemcik for Rosenborg with an absolutely disgraceful tackle on Casemiro. Friendly or not, that’s a red card. Disgusting.”

A fifth person said: “For a pre-season game, that is a diabolical challenge on Casemiro. Nemcik gets away with a yellow because of the circumstances…”

A sixth said: “Nemcik horrible challenge on Casemiro.. would have been a redcard if not a friendly… sees a yellow instead.”

Ten Hag will be hoping for a big improvement from his side this term. The Dutchman was handed a new contract after winning the FA Cup, but few would have considered last season’s performances as convincing.

Manchester United fans have expressed concerns over Tyrell Malacia after the club released their first images of pre-season training.

Malacia joined United from Feyenoord in 2022, becoming Erik ten Hag’s first signing for a fee of £13 million.

He made 39 appearances in all competitions in his debut season, including 22 games in the Premier League, as United won the Carabao Cup.

But after playing in United’s final game of the season against Newcastle, Malacia was forced to undergo knee surgery in the summer of 2023.

The 24-year-old has not featured in over a year following on from the lengthy lay-off, failing to make a single appearance last term.

United fans had their first sighting of him for a long time at Wembley in May following the FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.

Yet while he was part of those celebrations, fans have become concerned after failing to see Malacia in official pictures posted by the club after the senior team returned to pre-season training this week.

It has not been confirmed whether he was at their Carrington training base with the rest of the squad, only that he wasn’t pictured in any photos released by the club on their official social media channels.

One supporter wrote: “No picture of Malacia at Carrington today.”

Another commented: “I hope he comes back soon. Feel horrible the way it’s gone for him, especially after he had a pretty successful first season. Need him back ASAP!!”

A third asked: “Where’s Malacia @ManUtd.”

A fourth also reacted, writing: “Where’s Malacia?”

A final person commented: “Hopefully he did train and they just didn’t picture him.”

A Manchester United spokesperson has confirmed to SPORTbible that Malacia is still continuing his recovery from injury.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Netherlands international is away from first-team training and there is no timeframe on when he will return.

United were handed a boost at left-back this week as Luke Shaw was back on the pitch, coming off the bench to help England beat Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter finals after being out since February.

Man Utd fans are convinced they’ve uncovered a gem following pre-season masterclass against Rosenborg

The 20-year-old was one of United’s standout performers on Monday.

Manchester United fans are convinced they’ve discovered another top young talent after his “amazing” display in Monday’s opening pre-season game.

Erik ten Hag’s side began their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Eliteserien side Rosenborg BK in Norway.

A late goal from Noah Jean Holm put a dampener on United’s first outing of pre-season but for many, the performance of Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek made up for it.

Vitek, who joined the Reds in 2020 from Sigma Olomouc, was included in the squad for Monday’s game alongside a number of academy products, including Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher and Toby Collyer.

And he repaid Ten Hag’s faith with a superb display between the sticks, making seven saves in total.

A frustrated Ten Hag praised the 20-year-old goalkeeper after the full-time whistle, saying: “Let’s say he [Vitek] had the opportunity to shine thanks to the team’s performance, which was not good enough.”

Vitek, who made 18 appearances for League Two side Accrington Stanley last season, earned a huge amount of praise on social media.

Here’s how fans reacted to Vitek’s outing against Rosenborg.

One said: “Get Vitek another good loan – He’s been amazing today. Strong loan with Accrington last season, needs another good one this season. I know people may say keep him as number 2, but he needs game time.”

A second wrote: “Vitek with an outrageous save, blimey what a game he’s having,” while a third commented: “The academy have spawned another excellent keeper in Vitek.”

Advert

A fourth said during the game: “No idea how United aren’t behind. Vitek in goal making some very good saves – easily the best United player in the first half.”

A fifth added: “Vitek has been absolutely amazing today. He definitely should be considered for the no:2 spot.”

Man Utd player signs new contract to give Erik ten Hag boost ahead of pre-season

Erik ten Hag has been handed a boost ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Manchester United have been handed a major boost ahead of their pre-season arrangements this summer.

Erik ten Hag’s side will be bidding for a season of progression after beating Manchester City to win the 2024 FA Cup at the back end of a largely disappointing 2023/24 campaign.

With plenty of players heading for the exit door, one experienced member of the side has agreed fresh terms regarding a new one-year deal.

As confirmed by the club on Tuesday, Tom Heaton will remain at Old Trafford for the 2024/25 campaign.

Advert

Heaton is a product of the Red Devils’ historic academy system and is already into his second spell with the club.

After returning in 2021, he eventually made his senior debut for United in the UEFA Champions League later that year against Young Boys.

The 38-year-old is a popular member of Ten Hag’s side and expressed his joy upon remaining at the Theatre of Dreams.

“I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club,” Heaton told club media.

Advert

“I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead.

“In addition to on the pitch, I’m learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be.

“But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season.”

Ten Hag remained as manager despite having led the club to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last term.

The Red Devils won just 18 of their 38 matches in the English top flight and even sounded out potential replacements for the Dutchman this summer.

However, minority owners INEOS eventually decided that is was best to keep the former Ajax boss and look to renew his contract at the club.

“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager,” Ten Hag told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

Advert

“Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract.

“This isn’t easily done, we are still going to have to talk about this.

“INEOS took their time. They are new in football, it’s normal to reflect on the season.

“It’s no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.”

Erik ten Hag rips into his players after Man Utd’s pre-season defeat to Rosenborg, he didn’t hold back

Erik ten Hag rips into his players after Man Utd’s pre-season defeat to Rosenborg, he didn’t hold back

It was only the first game of pre-season but Ten Hag wanted to see more from his players.

Jack Kenmare

Jack Kenmare

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was far from happy with his team’s performance in their pre-season opener against Rosenborg BK.

The Reds kicked off their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign with a 1-0 defeat after Noah Jean Holm’s injury-time winner sealed United’s fate at the Lerkendal Stadion, Norway.

Ahead of kick-off, Ten Hag said he wanted to see his players show “intensity” in their first pre-season outing.

Advert

He also mentioned being “hard to beat” when coming up against their opposition, who currently sit 11th in the Eliteserien table – but their lacklustre display left much to be desired.

In fact, in his post-match interview with MUTV, a frustrated Ten Hag described the performance as “not good enough” before mentioning dipping standards.

“The result is not secondary,” Ten Hag said. “Of course, we play pre-season but at Manchester United the standard is you win games and definitely don’t lose games.

“So if you can’t win, don’t lose the game, like we did in the last second of the game. But of course, the performance is more important and the performance was below standards.

Advert

“Let’s say he (Vitek) got the opportunity from the team to make some very good saves because the performance from the team is, by far, not good enough.”

Ten Hag added: “We can talk [about] everything that is bad, but I’m not that guy. I have seen and this is not the standard for top football. Top football, you have to achieve much higher standards, starts with any individual, make sure you’re fit.

“I know we can’t be match-fit in this moment, I know you need these games.

Advert

“The opponent is in the league, they have a much higher fitness level but we are Man United and players from Man United, a team from Man United, should perform better.”

Given the fact that Rosenborg are midway through their domestic season in Norway, whilst many of the United squad are only just returning from their summer break, you can understand why their performance was far from perfect.

But clearly Ten Hag is in no mood to make excuses.

Jonny Evans, who penned a new contract at Old Trafford last week, was joined by Mason Mount, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford in the starting line-up on Monday.

Hannibal also featured from the start alongside highly-rated forward Ethan Wheatley but it was the performance of Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek that brought the most praise.

In his post-match interview, Ten Hag also gave his thoughts on new assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy, who recently joined the coaching staff alongside another former Eredivisie manager, Rene Hake.
