NEW DELHI: Cathy Ferguson, the cherished wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has sadly passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind her husband and their three sons. The Ferguson family confirmed this heart-wrenching news in a statement issued on Friday.
The statement read, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday [Thursday] of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time.”
Manchester United also issued a statement honoring Cathy’s memory, conveying their sincere condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family. The statement described Lady Cathy as a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was an essential pillar of support for Sir Alex throughout his career.
It reads, “Everyone at Manchester United extends their sincere condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the death of Lady Cathy. Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a pillar to Sir Alex throughout his career.”
Lady Cathy, formerly known as Cathy Holding, shared a loving relationship with Alex Ferguson since their meeting in 1964, culminating in their marriage in 1966. The couple welcomed their first son, Mark, two years later, followed by twins, Darren and Jason, in 1972. Cathy remained a steadfast source of support throughout her husband’s illustrious career at Old Trafford. Her unwavering encouragement played a pivotal role in Ferguson’s decision to continue with Manchester United, despite being courted by Tottenham Hotspur earlier in his career.
Regarding her influence on his career, Ferguson noted, “Unfortunately, Mrs. Ferguson was not keen on a move to London, and that was that.”
Sir Alex Ferguson, who is 81 years old, has not attended recent Manchester United home matches. He previously revealed that he might have extended his tenure at the club beyond his official retirement in 2013 if it weren’t for the passing of Cathy’s twin sister, Bridget, who was also her closest friend. He recalled, “I saw she [Cathy] was watching television one night, and she looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was isolated. Her and Bridget were twins, you know?”
Cathy was a steadfast supporter of her husband’s career, even when he initially considered retirement in 2002. At that time, she reasoned, “One, your health is good. Two, I’m not having you in the house. And three, you’re too young anyway.”
Cathy remained by Sir Alex’s side during his life-threatening brain haemorrhage in 2018, offering unwavering support throughout his recovery. The couple shares three children and 13 grandchildren.
In a tribute to his wife during his farewell speech to Manchester United following his final home match in charge, Ferguson expressed, “I think a lot of the time, for 47 years, she’s been the leader of the family, looked after our three sons, and sacrificed herself for me.”
