PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte is edging closer to a move to Manchester United as Ineos continue to set their stall out in the transfer market. The Manchester Evening News understands progress has been made in discussions over the Uruguay international, who has been a priority for United this summer.
After deals for Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were confirmed, United put their efforts into securing another defensive midfielder to provide cover and competition. Ineos outlined Ugarte as a top target and now look increasingly likely to get their main.
The full details on that proposed transfer are yet to be finalised. However, the understanding is Ugarte will sign for United in an agreement similar to Sofyan Amrabat’s arrival last summer. Initially joining United on loan, there would be an obligation to make his deal permanent next summer.

Ugarte, 23, was omitted by PSG for their Ligue 1 opener amid intense discussions over his future. As and when the 22-cap Uruguay international touches down in the Premier League, though, he might have a tough choice to make when it comes to his shirt number – as the player’s usual options are taken!
Throughout his club career so far, the midfielder has worn No.20, No.8, No.15, No.14 and No.4, which are assigned to Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Yoro, Christian Eriksen and De Ligt respectively. However, there is an outside chance Eriksen could leave before August 30 and free-up No.14 in the process.
The numbers Ugarte has worn for Uruguay are also assigned with Alejandro Garnacho (No.17), Harry Maguire (No.5), Lisandro Martinez (No.6), Dalot (No.20), Yoro (No.15) and Jadon Sancho (No.25) in possession.
