A Bronze Legacy in the Making: Texas Longhorns Softball to Immortalize Mia Scott With Commemorative Statue, Honoring One of the Program’s Brightest Stars as Construction Begins on Historic Monument
In a landmark tribute to one of the most celebrated athletes in Texas Longhorns softball history, the University of Texas has officially announced plans to immortalize Mia Scott with a commemorative statue—marking a powerful moment not only for the program but also for women’s collegiate athletics as a whole.
The announcement, made earlier this week, was accompanied by the unveiling of a life-sized sample model of the bronze statue that will ultimately grace the entrance of Red & Charline McCombs Field. University officials confirmed that installation of the statue is set to commence in late July 2025, with a formal unveiling ceremony scheduled ahead of the 2026 softball season.
This move positions Mia Scott as the first female Texas Longhorns athlete—across all sports—to be honored with a statue, a monumental recognition that reflects her extraordinary impact on and off the field.
A Legacy Etched in Longhorns Lore
Mia Scott, a dynamic third baseman known for her elite athleticism, unmatched consistency, and unwavering leadership, etched her name into Texas history books over her standout collegiate career. From her explosive debut as a freshman to her veteran leadership in later years, Scott was the heart and soul of the Longhorns’ infield—and a cornerstone in the team’s rise to national prominence.
Known for her electrifying speed, pinpoint defensive precision, and powerful swing, Scott consistently led the team in key offensive categories and earned numerous accolades, including multiple All-Big 12 First Team selections and All-American honors. But more than just her stats, it was her fiery spirit and calm under pressure that left an indelible mark on teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
“It’s not just about the plays she made,” said Texas head coach Mike White. “It’s about the way she carried herself. The way she inspired everyone in the dugout. The way she represented this university. She was the heartbeat of Texas Softball during her time here.”
Symbolism Beyond the Sport
The statue’s design was crafted in collaboration with renowned sports sculptor Blake Cortland, who has previously worked on tributes for notable athletes across the SEC and Big Ten. The sample model showcases Scott in her iconic game stance—glove low, eyes sharp, and ready to pounce on the next grounder. The pose, sculptors said, was chosen because it captures her signature intensity and readiness—qualities that defined her style of play.
“Statues are more than stone or bronze,” Cortland said during the unveiling. “They’re vessels of memory and inspiration. Mia’s story is one of grit, leadership, and excellence. Her statue will inspire generations of athletes to come.”
The statue will also include an engraved quote from Scott:
“Greatness isn’t a goal—it’s a mindset. Every pitch, every inning, every moment counts.”
University President Jay Hartzell emphasized the broader significance of the statue, stating, “This isn’t just a tribute to Mia—it’s a celebration of women’s sports, of excellence, and of Texas pride. Mia represents the very best of what our athletes can become, and her legacy deserves to be seen and remembered every day.”
Mia Scott Reacts: “I’m Speechless”
In a heartfelt reaction during the press conference, a visibly emotional Mia Scott expressed her gratitude and pride.
“I never played for awards or records. I played for my teammates, for my family, and for Texas,” she said. “To be honored in this way—permanently—it’s beyond anything I could’ve imagined. I’m deeply humbled.”
Scott, now playing professionally and mentoring young athletes through youth development programs, sees the statue as a symbol of progress in the recognition of female athletes.
“Representation matters. To every little girl who passes that statue and dreams of playing college ball—know that you belong, that you’re powerful, and that you can achieve greatness.”
What This Means for Texas Softball and Beyond
The announcement comes at a time when Texas is doubling down on its investment in women’s sports. Just days before, the university made headlines for signing Coach Mike White to a record-setting $2.5 million contract—the highest ever for a college softball coach.
Together, the moves signal a bold new era for Texas Softball: one that honors its past while ambitiously forging its future.
“This program is built on the shoulders of giants,” said Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. “Mia Scott is one of those giants.”
