MLB Rumors: Red Sox Fire 6 Coaches After Missing MLB Playoffs for 3rd Straight Season

The Boston Red Sox reached the American League Championship Series seven times and won four World Series from 2003 through 2021 but have been a far cry from that stretch of dominance in the three years since.

And they are reportedly making a number of changes as a result.

The Boston Globe and Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported Wednesday the Red Sox fired six different coaches from their staff after a third straight season of failing to make the playoffs.

Here is a list of who was fired:

First base coach Andy Fox

Bullpen coach Kevin Walker

Assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz

Mental skills coach Rey Fuentes

Trainer Ben Chadwick

Bullpen catcher Mani Martinez

Many of them had been with the organization for years with Fox joining in 2011, Walker joining in 2020, Ortiz joining in 2022, Fuentes joining in 2020, Chadwick joining in 2023 and Martinez joining in 2005.

Martinez had been the team’s bullpen catcher for more than a decade prior to this decision.

Boston will be under the spotlight this offseason as it attempts to reestablish itself as one of the gold standards of the league. It finished in third place in the American League East this season after two straight last-place finishes and will surely look to make up ground on the rival New York Yankees.

Manager Alex Cora will be back after he and the Red Sox agreed to a three-year extension in July. That extension runs through the 2027 season, although the team struggled after he inked that deal.

Boston was 53-43 at the All-Star break and appeared to be a significant playoff contender in the American League. However, it went 28-38 after the break and finished the year at .500 with an 81-81 record.

Perhaps that will inspire the front office to make some significant free-agent additions this offseason, but the overhaul has started with the coaching staff.
