Chelsea are considering a move for former Manchester United superstar David de Gea

According to 90min, Premier League giants Chelsea are considering a summer move for former Manchester United star David de Gea in the current summer transfer window.

The Spaniard is the reigning Premier League Golden Glove winner and is available for free after being released by the Red Devils earlier this summer. A long-time veteran of the English top flight, the 32-year-old has proven himself to be one of the best goalkeepers ever to grace the league.

It can be argued that De Gea’s talents have regressed in recent years but he remains a top player who can make a sizable difference on his day. As long as he has a stable defence ahead of him, the Spaniard can hold his own as the last line of defence.

Chelsea parted ways with Edouard Mendy earlier this summer and now Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to move to Real Madrid on loan. This leaves the club with only Robert Sanchez as the senior goalkeeper, necessitating the need for reinforcements.

Chelsea’s tryst with FFP is public knowledge and the excess money they have now had to spend on Moises Caicedo thanks to Liverpool could impact their search for a top-quality goalkeeper. De Gea can be signed on for free and would tick several boxes for the Blues in the short term.

The Spaniard still has a few good years left in him and can help Chelsea focus their attention on strengthening other areas of the roster. Given the players they have lost this summer, it is imperative that several new additions are made before the summer transfer window slams shut.

While the player, for his part, could indeed help Chelsea, it could impact his standing with the Manchester United faithful. The 32-year-old has often divided opinion at Old Trafford but going on to join a rival could work against him. After all, if Peter Schmeichel can be called out, so can De Gea.
