Spain vs England – LIVE!

England look to make history and be crowned European champions as they face Spain tonight in the Euro 2024 final. The Three Lions have not won a major trophy since 1966, and have never done so on foreign soil, but Gareth Southgate’s side have the chance to end the long wait and spark wild celebrations back home.

It is a second consecutive Euros final for England, three years on from taking on Italy and losing on penalties at Wembley. Getting to this stage felt improbable for much of the past month, with the Three Lions failing to impress in the group stage and then stumbling past Slovakia and Switzerland, but victory over the Netherlands in the quarter-finals came through their best performance of the tournament. Southgate makes one change to the starting lineup, with Luke Shaw coming in for Kieran Trippier.

Spain have been the standout side at Euro 2024, with 17-year-old Lamine Yamal among those to shine in knocking out hosts Germany and France along the way. Victory here and it will be a third title in the last five European Championships. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below, featuring expert analysis from Dan Kilpatrick and Malik Ouzia in Berlin!

KICK-OFF!

We’re underway!

Try and remember to breathe at some point.

Some noise!

It’s near enough a home game for England.

Anthems done. Handshakes done. Montages… finally done.

It’s time for the Euro 2024 final!

Giorgio Chiellini brings out the trophy and is roundly booed by England fans, who presumably haven’t forgotten his clothesline on Bukayo Saka in the last Euros final three years ago.

Time to consign those memories to history.

Here we go!

Giorgio Chiellini has walked out onto the pitch, holding the trophy. BOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Anyway, players are out onto the pitch. And it’s an incredible atmosphere.

And from the Spanish camp…

Well the music isn’t going down particularly well with those in the red corner tonight.

Luis Garcia, former Liverpool and more importantly Spain winger, has voiced his discontent with the DJ giving the English fans what they want.

Ah well.

The players are back inside.

The closing ceremony is underway, pyrotechnics are going off and music blaring out.

Literally nobody cares. Just over ten minutes until the serious business begins.

Hell of a lot of faff going into assembling the stage and set for a closing ceremony that I assume is going to last about 10 minutes.

Could just get Tom Grennan out there with a microphone singing the Gillette song a couple of times and have it done. Would be better, too.

Certainly done that…

Gareth Southgate has given the country plenty of memorable nights over the past six years.

Deep runs in major tournaments, big wins, but never quite getting over the line.

This could prove to be Southgate’s final match in charge of England – would be beyond special if he gets his hands on the trophy tonight.

Because of the curvature of the ground, which has a covered athletics track around it, the fans even in the front row of seats behind the goal are a good 50 yards from the net.

I’ve just seen Phil Foden hit a shot that both cleared the bar and then bounced twice before reaching them.
