Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in their opening game of their pre-season tour of the United States was overshadowed by the losses of Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund to suspected injuries.

Just minutes after giving United an early lead, Hojlund was forced off after taking a seat on the turf. He signalled to the bench that he needed to be withdrawn and he went straight down the tunnel.

Gabriel Jesus then brought Arsenal level ahead of Leny Yoro being forced off with an injury concern of his own. The game was paused after 30 minutes for a drinks break and Yoro appeared to be in discomfort during that pause, limping and shaking his head.

He joined Hojlund in returning to the dressing room ahead of schedule. Erik ten Hag made 10 changes at half-time and Arsenal edged the second half, sealing the win late on via substitute Gabriel Martinelli.

The game ended with a penalty shootout which United won 4-3. Jadon Sancho netted the winning spot-kick for the Reds.

03:35KEY EVENT

REPORT: United pay the price for overlooking coaching role change in Arsenal defeat

All it took was 13 minutes. Rasmus Hojlund was mobile and scoring one minute and then down and out the next.

Erik ten Hag warned on Friday “it will happen” when Manchester United’s injury woe was raised. It has started before the season has started. United’s new number nine retired hurt within a quarter of an hour of his maiden pre-season appearance.

Before the half was over, a crestfallen Leny Yoro also hobbled off. The teenager was consoled by teammates and Ten Hag sidled over for an update. That is £130million worth of talent possibly unavailable for the remainder of pre-season and beyond.

PLAYER RATINGS: Onana impresses as United lose tour opener

United were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal in their opening game of their pre-season tour of the United States.

Gabriel Martinelli, fresh off the bench, netted a late winner for the Gunners, who had earlier fought back from a goal down to draw themselves level.

Rasmus Hojlund, who opened the scoring for United early on, was forced off with an injury concern, as was Leny Yoro.

Here is a flavour of how chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst rated the players out of 10…

Andre Onana

Made a good stop, albeit from an offside action, and was proactive outside the area. The only starter to play more than a half and impressively denied Leandro Trossard. 7

Harry Maguire

A solid half on his return from a two-and-a-half month lay-off with a calf injury. Gabriel Jesus was nearby for the goal but Harry Amass’ responsibility. 6

Penalties coming up

Here we go, then. We’re going to have a penalty shootout. It will count as nothing more than practice for those who are about to step up.

03:05KEY EVENT

FULL-TIME: ARS 2-1 MUN

It’s all over at the SoFi Stadium and Arsenal have edged this one by the odd goal in three. Gabriel Martinelli netted the winner after Gabriel Jesus had earlier cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s early opener.

The biggest concern for United, however, is that they lost both Hojlund and Leny Yoro to suspected injuries in the first half.

There will be a penalty shootout to conclude this game.

03:02George Smith

90′ – ARS 2-1 MUN – Two minutes of added time

There will be two additional minutes at the SoFi Stadium.

Remember, whatever the outcome, there will be a penalty shootout after the full-time whistle.

02:54KEY EVENT

81′ – ARS 2-1 MUN – ARSENAL GOAL! (Martinelli)

The substitute makes an almost immediate impact. Gabriel Martinelli picks the ball up on the edge of the left side of the box, moves inside, gets away from James Scanlon, and fires a low effort past Andre Onana. That was disappointing from a United perspective.

02:44George Smith

71′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – A triple Arsenal change

Mikel Arteta has made a hat-trick of changes for Arsenal, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and Eddie Nketiah.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus and Reiss Nelson have gone off.

Andre Onana reacts to a goal from Arsenal’s Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus during the pre-season club friendly football match between Manchester United and Arsenal

02:38George Smith

66′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Better from United

United have found a little bit of energy in the last few minutes, working the ball into some advanced areas. Scott McTominay and Antony have just combined a couple of times in an attempt to make something happen.

02:35George Smith

62′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Antony bends an effort wide

Just like that, United do get forward. Antony works the ball into a decent position on the edge of the box, shifting the ball onto his stronger left foot, but he bends his effort well wide of the target.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have made a handful of substitutions. Thomas Partey is among those who have come on.

02:33George Smith

60′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – United can’t get out

We’re 15 minutes into this second half and it is hard to recall United getting over the halfway line with any real purpose. Arsenal have dominated the ball and done the majority of the dictating.

Ten changes at the break were always going to result in any sort of rhythm being disrupted.

02:30George Smith

58′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – A terrific stop from Onana

What a save that is from Andre Onana. The Cameroonian tips a fierce effort from Lenadro Trossard over the bar from inside the penalty area. The shot came in after some good work from Reiss Nelson.

02:24George Smith

52′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Lots of Arsenal possession

Arsenal have enjoyed more of the ball in the first few minutes of this second half. They are zipping it around the back before attempting to hit United on the counter-attack. They have already attempted to catch United out with two long balls over the top.

02:20George Smith

48′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – United’s second half XI

Following a plethoa of changes, this is how United now line-up in this second half:

Onana; Scanlon, Fish, Evans, Murray; Oyedele, Eriksen, McTominay, Antony, Wheatley, Sancho.

Andre Onana makes a save during the pre-season match between Manchester United and Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood

02:18George Smith

46′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Second half kicks-off as Ten Hag rings the changes

As expected, United manager Erik ten Hag has made a raft of changes at the half-time break, making 10 in total.

Andre Onana is the only player who has stayed on from the first half.

02:00KEY EVENT

Half-time player ratings as Mount catches the eye

Here is how Samuel Luckhurst has rated United’s players out of 10 following the first 45 minutes…

Onana

Good save form an offside situation. 6

Wan-Bissaka

Not particularly impressive. 5

Yoro

Went off injured. 6

Maguire

Fine. 6

Amass

Confident start but blindsided by Jesus for the goal – which was possibly offside. 5

Collyer

Another assured half. 6

Casemiro

Rusty. 5

Amad

Had a chance to score. 6

Mount

United’s best player. 7

Rashford

Contributed to the goal. 6

Hojlund

Scored one minute and got injured the next. 6

01:59KEY EVENT

HALF-TIME: ARS 1-1 MUN

There goes the half-time whistle here at the SoFi Stadium and there is nothing to split the two sides.

Gabriel Jesus cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s opener. More concerning for United, however, is that they have lost both Leny Yoro and Hojlund to injury. With that in mind, the scoreline is second nature right now.

(Image: Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images.)

01:56George Smith

45′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Three minutes added on

Three minutes have been added on at the end of this first half.

01:51Samuel Luckhurst

41′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – This is turning into a disaster

This is descending into a disaster for United. The scoreline is pretty moot given two of their major players have retired hurt before half-time.

It beggars belief United have not actually added a new fitness coach to the staff because they were having injury crises long before last season.

01:45KEY EVENT

34′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – Yoro forced off

It gets worse for United; Leny Yoro is now making his way back towards the tunnel. He was limping during the water break and shaking his head. Rhys Bennett is coming on.

01:43George Smith

31′ – ARS 1-1 MUN – A short pause

Both sets of players have come across to the nearside for a quick drinks break. Erik ten Hag is using the pause to get some instructions across to his players.
