Did Cristiano Ronaldo make a mistake by returning to Manchester United?

When Cristiano Ronaldo decided to part ways with Juventus last summer in order to make an Old Trafford return, he may not have contemplated the scenario in which this Manchester United team are struggling to deliver in this first stretch of the season.

The Red Devils have won just two of their last seven games in all competitions and they are currently sitting seventh in the Premier League table.

They may be topping Champions League Group B, but to do so they had to pull off two home comeback victories against Villarreal and Atalanta, after losing away at Young Boys. One of the poorest results for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side also came about a month ago when David Moyes’ West Ham beat them 1-0 at Old Trafford to knock them out from the Carabao Cup. Then, things went from bad to worse with the 5-0 humiliation at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

Ronaldo’s brilliant start to the campaign

Ronaldo hit the ground running upon his Old Trafford comeback as he registered five goals in his first six games for the Red Devils.

The Portugal international netted a brace in his second United debut against Newcastle, the opener in their 2-1 defeat to Young Boys, the equaliser in their 2-1 victory at West Ham and the winner against Villarreal.

In total, Ronaldo has scored six times in nine games so far this season for Manchester United, but no other player seems to be able to complement him for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo can’t do it alone

Bruno Fernandes is struggling to rediscover his form, while Harry Maguire has made some crucial mistakes in goals conceded by his team this season and new signing Jadon Sancho has yet to stand out.

Paul Pogba has failed to lead the team from the midfield, while summer arrival Raphael Varane is sidelined through a knock and Marcus Rashford has only just returned to action after recovering from an injury.

The arrivals of Sancho and Varane were supposed to transform this Manchester United team into title contenders, but this doesn’t seem to be the case judging by their form in this first stretch of their campaign under Solskjaer.

It could be the case, then, that Ronaldo made a mistake by deciding to leave Juventus to return to Manchester United last summer.
