Manchester United Transfer News: Angel Di Maria Reveals Red Devils ‘Problems’

The dust has long since settled on Angel Di Maria’s summer move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the former Manchester United misfit has lifted the lid on “problems” with the club that paint him as the victim in his exit.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca in a tell-all interview, the Argentina international admitted he never wanted to leave Real Madrid in 2014 and said there were too many factors against him in England (h/t Eurosport): “I started very well. Then I had problems with people in the club, I started going to the bench, this happens in football. After the robbery at my house, everything made me want to leave there quickly.”

Di Maria broke the British transfer record upon moving to United for a fee of £59.7 million last year, but a miserable season under Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal ended with a move to PSG this past summer.

The South American managed just four goals in 33 games across all competitions and failed to recapture the form that saw him thrive across four seasons at the Bernabeu, where he wanted to remain: “My intention was always to stay at Real Madrid. I do not know much about what happened as these are more things for representatives. These things happen in football. I left Madrid but I had the most beautiful last ovation from the Bernabeu and with that I remain calm.”

Di Maria’s failed Manchester United tenure provides ammunition for the belief that great (or expensive) players can’t always translate their form across leagues, something PSG are now discovering for themselves.

The winger’s admission strikes as an attempt to in some way provide an excuse for his sub-par Premier League form, although FourFourTwo’s Elko Born merely sees it as evidence of weak mental constitution:

If it’s true Di Maria ‘never wanted’ his transfer to MUFC, then he should be ashamed of himself. Grown man with the mind of a baby

Following a string of standout performances at the 2014 World Cup, Di Maria thought he had done enough to earn his place at Real Madrid, but Los Blancos opted to sign another tournament ace in James Rodriguez.

Many at the Bernabeu may have been happy enough to keep their incumbent wide man around, but Di Maria went on to suggest there were forces at the club working in the opposite direction:

They always wanted to attribute a desire to leave the club, but it was not true. The only thing I asked for is something that was fair. There are many things that I value and many of them have nothing to do with my salary.

After winning La Decima I went to the World Cup with the hope of receiving the nod from the directors, which never came. Many things and many lies were spoken.

I didn’t have much of a relationship with [Madrid president] Florentino Perez. This is a president who does what he has to do in his work. When I signed, I signed and when I had to go, I went.

His form has improved slightly since moving to Ligue 1, and Di Maria’s record of three goals in 10 appearances for PSG makes for better reading.

However, French media are demanding more of a player who set Laurent Blanc’s side back £44 million, according to Ligue 1 Show presenter Matt Spiro:

Di Maria under fire. L’Equipe ask when will he start performing, Blanc says ‘needs to integrate team, not weaken it’ https://t.co/h6gbFGwF0E

Perhaps Di Maria could be forgiven for an off season in the much different English top flight. It was a major move to make from Spain, after all, and some players simply aren’t cut out for certain styles.

The 27-year-old insists these “problems” were at the heart of his Manchester United fall, but failure to bounce back at Parc des Princes may provide reason to believe the player is a bit too easily pushed off course.
