‘Football is a strange game’

Liverpool fans on our discussion page, meanwhile, are looking at the big picture in order to temper their disappointment from today’s result.

Ola L: United were way worse than last year. We are much better this year. Yet, 0-0. Football is a strange game.

Jj L: Hope Klopp will now realise Nunez isn’t starter material and Big Dom needs a rest. He has been running on empty for the last few matches.

Max F: Of course this was disappointing, but honestly we had it coming. Fulham, Sheffield (less so), Crystal Palace could all have been draws or even defeats. It sucks because it’s United, but we go again. We’re still in a title race we didn’t expect to be in at this point.

United fans perceive a double standard

(Getty Images)

Manchester United fans on our discussion page are reacting to a dour performance from their side with a bit of humour.

Kiril M: I can totally see why Man United were in for Darwin Nunez. Limited ability, mentally weak, bad character. If he was 10 years older, we would’ve signed him on a 5 year contract for sure.

Ruaidhrí W: To be fair Antony would be really annoying to play against, it’s just a shame it’s cancelled out by him being really annoying to play with.

On a more serious note, several United supporters have pointed out the rather harsh reaction to Dalot’s dissent given Nunez’s earlier reaction.

A S: After Nunez giving the ref a thumbs up for his yellow *and* showing the ref the imaginary yellow, all in protest of his yellow card, it’s absurd that Dalot gets two.

Joshua L: Interesting that Nunez got booked for a blatant foul then clapped the officials sarcastically – nothing done. Dalot been ridiculously punished

Did the best chance fall to Hojlund?

(Getty Images)

Erik ten Hag just discussed whether Manchester United actually had the best chance today? Yes, he said, when Rasmus Hojlund was through on goal.

We’ll, not so according to expected goals. That Hojlund chance in the second half was worth 0.2 xG.

The highest? That was a close-range effort stuck over by Gravenberch after just 16 minutes, worth 0.41.

An imperfect science, but an interesting discussion when the game is goalless.

Arrogance or frustration? Probably both

How many times has a game played out like that one at Anfield, and the pre-game favourites lament the game plan of the team that stifled them?

Virgil van Dijk isn’t necessarily wrong in saying Manchester United didn’t really push to win the game, because Scott McTominay said said as much himself. Some pundits (OK, Roy Keane) have since labelled Van Dijk’s view as arrogant.

But in truth, it’s then on Liverpool that their forwards struggled to make enough genuine, clear-cut chances or took the wrong decision when an opportunity arose.

Also, it’s hard to recall many teams capable of being champions that didn’t have a degree of arrogance about them to believe they could.

Rare quiet day for Salah

(Getty Images)

Mohamed Salah nearly went a whole calendar year without having a single Premier League appearance at Anfield in which he failed to record either a goal or an assist.

Today marks the first time since January 21 that the forward failed to do so in a PL game at Anfield, snapping a streak of 16 straight games with a goal involvement.

Salah had four shots on target in today’s game, his joint-most in a Premier League match without scoring.

Manchester United have scored just 18 goals across 17 Premier League games this season.

That ranks as their joint-fewest goals scored at this stage of a season in the PL, equalling 1992-93.

Ten Hag: ‘We can make something of this season’

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was a happy man after that, which you can understand given how things have been at Old Trafford recently. Here’s what he said to BBC Sport:

💬 “The performance was very good from our side. The game plan went well, the players were brilliant how they stuck together.

“My only criticism would be in possession we could hurt them more, if you get one, two, three passes in. If we scored one of the big opportunities we could have won this game.

“Liverpool is a very good team, a very good attacking team and a lot of movement. You have to defend very disciplined and it is a big compliment to the team how they did. The spirit, passion and desire was there.

“We knew beforehand that last year we beat them twice but we lost – and it was a big loss. Of course you want to take revenge. We have a good squad, a good team and we can make something out of this season.”

Onana was United’s most influential player

(Getty Images)

André Onana led all Manchester United players today with 30 completed passes. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Erik ten Hag’s outfield players.

The goalie also made eight saves in this match, which ranks as the most by a United keeper in a Premier League match against Liverpool since David de Gea also had eight in December 2014.

Klopp: United don’t ‘turn up with a white flag’

(Getty Images)

Klopp was also asked by Sky Sports how we dealt with media expectations of a Liverpool blowout: “I think you overestimate your influence. We couldn’t be bothered what you say. It has nothing to do with what happens, we knew it would be difficult.

“What everyone says only helps United. Why should we listen to that? They were fired up and I cant remember a game where they turn up with a white flag, it doesn’t happen.

“We tried everything and the numbers we created, in terms of shots, is crazy. But with that about of shots there should be a few more on target. That was our fault today and we go from here.”

Klopp: This was more dominant than the 7-0 win

(Getty Images)

Jurgen Klopp also spoke to Sky Sports after the match: “I saw a lot of good things, the one thing I don’t like is the result. We should have scored.

“We were in a rush in moments but I liked a lot the intensity of the game and the start to the game. Everyone saw what we wanted, our counter-pressing was good as a group and we didn’t let them out.

“I cant remember such a dominant performance against Man United, even the 7-0. Now it’s 0-0, they probably feel slightly better than us. But we take the point and keep going.

“It was the type of game I expected. If we play like this it is difficult for the opposite team to get out of their own half and the way United were defending was clean with a lot of passion.

“If you score, it changes the dynamic of the game and they open up a bit and take more risk. But nothing changed, they threw everything in and it’s a 0-0.”

United missed Fernandes after all

For all the talk about how Manchester United might actually benefit from missing their captain Bruno Fernandes today – his indiscipline being a liability – they certainly could have benefitted from his creativity in this match.

He has been involved in a team-high 33 per cent of United’s Premier League goals (6/18) this season. Entering the weekend, he ranked first for chances created (47) and second for expected assists (5.2) across the entire league.

Despite today’s result being seen as a positive for Manchester United, their away record against tough sides under Erik ten Hag remains abysmal.

They have now failed to win any of their past 14 Premier League away games against sides starting the day in the top eight of the table (D4 L10).

You have to go all the way back to a 3-0 win over Tottenham in October 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjær to find their last such victory!

McTominay: ‘The biggest honour in my career’

(Getty Images)

Scott McTominay was Manchester United captain for the first time in the Premier League today, and he remains unbeaten. He’s just been speaking to Sky Sports too:

💬 “It’s the biggest honour in my career, there’s not really much else I can say. I’m thankful to to be in this position, and I want to go for more.

“We had to to stay calm and stick together, and we had moments where we had chances and could have hurt them. We’re a little disappointed we couldn’t come here and make it more of a game, have more shots. But I’m sure the boys will be be pleased not to lose.

Van Dijk: Only one team tried to win

(Getty Images)

Virgil van Dijk was asked by Sky Sports if he was frustrated with the draw: “100%. If you see how we played the game, we had most of the ball and created some opportunities. There was only one team trying to win the game.

“We want to win every game of course and that is why it is frustrating. Sometimes we shot too easy and could have passed on the overlap. The right decision was sometimes lacking.

“We carry on of course but it is frustrating because we were superior in all aspects. In the end they are buzzing with a point and we are disappointed with a point.

“Obviously they are not in the best phase. Coming here you are wary of the threat we have. We should have won it today. We have to learn from certain situations and I know we will.

“Last year we didn’t come in with a good feeling towards the Manchester United game but we won the game convincingly, but last year doesn’t count now.”

Great result for United

Considering the mood and expectations heading into this game, that is a really positive outcome for United.

When a draw feels like a win

Erik ten Hag will be the happier manager today by far. Really dull game for the fans. Neither team doing enough. But the priority for United will have been to be hard to beat and frustrate Liverpool.

Really pleased and a relief for Ten Hag considering the week they have had.

Bad day at the office for Liverpool, who didn’t create enough in the final third. Way below what Jurgen Klopp would expect and they’re going to need to be a lot better against Arsenal next week.

Liverpool need to move on and focus as it will be a huge game next.

Gakpo, Jones and Elliott out there warming up. Klopp must be thinking about changes. Liverpool in need of some inspiration.

Genuine chance for Garnacho

55′ Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

Now that’s a real United chance. Garnacho is found by Mainoo, gets into the box and in on goal, only for Alexander-Arnold to do enough to put him off. The resulting shot dribbles through to Alisson.

That’s as good as it’s been for United but they’ll hope they get more of that sort of chance as the game wears on.

Great ball from Mainoo to make it happen too.

Endo struggles

It was interesting that earlier in the second half, there was a bit of frustration from the Liverpool back line at one of Endo’s decisions in possession – to go backwards rather than turn with the ball and take his side forwards.

A lot was made of Endo’s big chance today but so far, it doesn’t feel like it’s worked.

Again, it’s Salah breaking forward. His cross is excellent, picking out Nunez. But he can’t deflect the ball beyond Onana and the United keeper collects.

However, it does feel like Liverpool are starting to great some good opportunities from open play – when in the first half they found they were coming from set-pieces.

The second half starts in similar fashion to the first. Salah tees up Alexander-Arnold, who bursts into the box but is fended off well be Varane.

Liverpool appear to be leaving a few more spaces in attack initially, perhaps being a little less keen to flood forward and in turn, take up some of the space they might need to unlock this United defence.

Liverpool do often leave it late

Liverpool have scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of league games this season, with 15 goals in the first half.

Not a game to switch off (or leave) early!

United happy to frustrate Liverpool

(Photo: Getty Images)

A half of nothing from both teams. No clear-cut chances for either. Liverpool with the better possession and a few opportunities on set pieces and shots around the edges. But United have defended well and frustrated Liverpool.

You can see with them having 11 behind the ball that’s their game plan. Almost like United are happy with a draw, don’t want to concede, and potentially steal a goal in transition. It will be interesting to see if anything changes in the second half.

Liverpool need to raise the intensity

(Photo: Getty Images)

Sometimes in a game like this you need someone to ‘clout’ someone to bring a sense of intensity into game! That’s from a Liverpool perspective, though. United just need to keep the game dead.

When Jonny Evans, good as he is, at 35 can step into a game like this and not look out of place, it shows the lack of cutting edge Liverpool have offered this afternoon.

Liverpool’s fast start gave way to frustration

Considering Liverpool has had all the ball United have defended pretty well. I would say Liverpool started fast, as expected, having three corners in the first five minutes. The fans got involved, creating an unbelievable atmosphere.

The very few moments United have even got into the Liverpool half was first from a long kick 50/50 ball in the middle, and then a Mainoo pass out for Antony that went across to Garnacho who shot wayward. But they’ll probably be the more happier team out of the two with staying in the game so far.

United satisfied despite offering nothing in attack

(Photo: Getty Images)

United will be satisfied at how that half transpired. They offered nothing going forwards but were compact defensively, with Evans and Shaw superb.

Varane has aimed for Garnacho in behind when up against Alexander-Arnold. That could also be a method for the second half with Rashford.

Hojlund only having four touches is a real issue.

How will Liverpool break through?

(Photo: Getty Images)

The bar is low for a United performance at Anfield, but they’re holding firm thus far. They’ve lost four of their last five trips here and were behind at half-time in all four of those (including being 2-0 down, twice).

Liverpool’s bench isn’t exactly stacked, mainly Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott, and Ten Hag has the Rashford wildcard to use at some point…

Dalot: 6. A busy start for the defender. Hardly able to break forward.

Varane: 7. Strong in possession and dominant in the air.

Evans: 6. Given the run around but remained solid so far.

Shaw: 6. Like Dalot, has been kept on the back foot throughout.

Antony: 5. Has made precious little impact.

McTominay: 7. United’s best player of the half, along with Onana.

Garnacho: 6. Smashed an early chance over the bar.

Hojlund: 4. Another frustrating half. Completely anonymous. Has only touched the ball four times!

Nunez, Hojlund stymied thus far

Not much fun for the two centre-forwards in this game so far. Rasmus Hojlund has touched the ball just four times, and it hasn’t been much better for Darwin Nunez, either, who has seen just five touches.

Perhaps it was to be expected for the visitors, but clearly Nunez needs to get in the game. What he has done well is continue to put pressure on the backline with his hard running.

United’s defensive midfielders are now vulnerable

Both United defensive midfielders have booked inside 35 minutes. Likely to have at least an hour to play, which might make it easier for Liverpool to play into their No 6/No 8s and get them on the half turn, if United’s midfielders are unable to dive in without risking a second yellow card.

Big test of discipline for United, who absorbed some early pressure, built-up okay, and have only truly looked threatened by Liverpool’s corners.

Excellent distribution from Onana

Lots of criticism for Andre Onana this season, but he’s had some excellent distribution in the first quarter of the game – particularly in terms of distance kicking, which is helping United to get out and prevent sustained spells of Liverpool pressure, which we saw in the opening few minutes.

He chopped Nunez a few moments ago, clearly confident despite an ultra-aggressive high press from Liverpool, with Nunez and Salah pairing up in a 4-4-2, positioned on the edge of the box.

So far so good from Ten Hag’s side, at least in build-up.

Liverpool condemn damage caused to Man Utd bus on Anfield arrival

Liverpool have condemned the damage caused to the Manchester United team bus on its arrival at Anfield ahead of today’s game.

The Merseyside club say they are working with the police to investigate and identify those responsible.

Videos on social media appear to show objects been thrown at the bus as it arrived. Liverpool say a window was not smashed but minor damage was caused. A club statement read:

💬 “Liverpool Football Club utterly condemns the actions that led to damage being caused to the Manchester United team bus during its arrival at Anfield this afternoon.

“We are aware of footage of the incident circulating online and are working with Merseyside Police, to fully investigate and identify those responsible.

“Any individuals found guilty of this reprehensible behaviour will also face the full force of the club’s sanction process.”
