Manchester United have been urged to reach out to their former goalkeeper David De Gea over the possibility of returning to the club and replacing Andre Onana. The Spaniard left Old Trafford in the summer after failing to agree terms on a new contract and remains a free agent, having not found another club since departing the Red Devils.

Andre Onana reaction speaks volumes as Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag protects him

Onana was signed for £47million to replace the 33-year-old but has made a number of high-profile mistakes in his opening few months, the latest coming in United’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Galatasaray. He misjudged two Hakim Ziyech free-kicks that the goalkeeper was unable to stop, ensuring that their European hopes hang by a thread.

Erik ten Hag came out in defence of Onana following the draw but there are concerns that Onana may not be the long-term goalkeeper for United. Former Sky Sports host Richard Keys has even suggested that they should contact De Gea after his replacement “let down” the team in Istanbul.

“I’m sorry. It wasn’t ‘game management’ that let Utd down – it was the keeper,” Keys wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) in response to Ten Hag’s analysis. “He’s not good enough. It’s that simple. The outfield players couldn’t have done a lot more. They were terrific at times. Has anyone got de Gea’s number?”

De Gea has perhaps surprisingly remained a free agent since leaving United, after a season in which he was awarded the Premier League Golden Glove for most clean sheets. There had been rumours of him moving to Saudi Arabia with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema but those links did not materialise into a contract.

He reportedly wants to stay in Europe despite big-money offers from elsewhere, while likely hoping to earn close to his £375,000-a-week United wages from last season. However, few teams at the top of the food chain have been prepared to offer him a number one goalkeeping spot with a large salary.

Whether De Gea would be interested in a return to United remains to be seen, but he had been in contract discussions late into the season before they spectacularly broke down when it was reported that a deal was agreed before the club reneged on those terms and offered him a substantial wage cut.

There has been no suggestion that United would consider contacting De Gea over the possibility of a free transfer.

If Ten Hag does wish to take Onana out of the firing line then he could hand an opportunity to backup stopper Altay Bayindir, who was brought in from Fenerbahce in the summer following the departures of De Gea and Dean Henderson.
